Kombucha is referred to as a fermented tea drink that can be made from sweetened black or green tea for added health benefits. This drink is produced by fermenting tea using a “symbiotic ‘colony’ of bacteria and yeast” also known as a SCOBY. A SCOBY is also called the “mother” because of its ability to reproduce. There isn’t a ton of scientific research on the health benefits of kombucha, but the beverage has 2,000 plus years of tradition behind it as it has been used as preventing and fighting cancer, arthritis and other degenerative diseases. It is not known where kombucha originated from, but it has linked to Chinese Medicine and became very popular in Russia and Europe in the early 1900s, before making it to the United States in the 2000s. What are the health benefits?? Detoxification: One of the greatest health benefits claimed for kombucha stems from its richness in many enzymes and bacterial acids that our body produces to detox our system. This reduces the pancreatic load and eases the burden on your liver along with bonding toxins out of your system. Gut Health and Digestion: Since kombucha is naturally fermented with a living colony of bacteria and yeast, it is considered a probiotic beverage. These good gut bacteria help and may help improve digestion, fight candida (harmful yeast) overgrowth and kill h. pylori bacteria on contact (bacteria linked to ulcers). Joint Health: Some data has suggested that kombucha contains glucosamine acid, chondrotin sulphate and glucuronic, which have the potential to aid in joint health. Some drinkers have reported improved flexibility and fluidity of movement in their joints. Immune Boosting: Since Kombucha is antioxidant rich this may hold potential for improving the immune system and energy levels. Weight Loss: Kombucha has been found to reduce sugar cravings (since it is semi-sweet drink), helps with hungry control and can be a delicious and healthy beverage alternative. Kombucha also contains a small amount of caffeine (depending on type of tea used to brew), which can add an extra pick me up without the sugar, crash later. This carbonated drink can be a great alternative to soda and can be brewed at home! Good Bacteria? Not all bacteria is bad! In fact, our bodies would not be able to survive without good bacteria, so we need to make sure we are eating foods that are filled with good bacteria and also foods that feed bacteria that already resides in our body. Kombucha and other fermented foods contain these good bacteria, also known as probiotics, which are essential to our survival. Leafy greens will feed your good bacteria! wEat fermented foods like kombucha, kimchi, pickled vegetables or sauerkraut. wReduce your stress levels, try out yoga or meditation to keep your stress levels down!
