History of Calorie
Well… It all began with Wilbur Olin Atwater. He made ground breaking research in human nutrition.

So what does Olin have to do with the Calorie?
![Page 7: What are Calories | Living Healthy for Beginners](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042713/5484d29ab47959e70c8b4cd3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The United States began using the Calorie only after Atwater’s use of it in his work in 1887. The most interesting part is that the only reason Atwater adopted the term “Calorie” is because it was the ONLY energy unit in the English dictionary.

What is even more interesting is that the Calorie seen on the American nutrition facts label is actually measured in kilocalories even though the label plainly states Calorie (1 kilocalorie = 1,000 Calories).
