Transcript of WHAT: a multi-phase water, sanitation, rainwater harvesting, and organic composting project. WHERE:...
• WHAT: a multi-phase water, sanitation, rainwater harvesting, and organic composting project.
• WHERE: village of (Sam) Mbollet in The Gambia, Africa.
• WHO: EWB teamed with GLOVE (Gambian LOngevitey through Village Enterprise) NGO and villagers.
• HOW: find viable and sustainable solutions to a variety of development issues.

Assessment TripAssessment Trip
• Establish a bond with GLOVE and with the village of Sam Mbollet for a long-term working relationship.
• Fact finding mission to determine the village water issues, and if time permits, sanitation issues.

Barrel WellBarrel Well
• Often used for drinking water (services about 100 people).
• Runs dry for periods of time at the end of the dry season.
• GLOVE wants to upgrade this well by digging it deeper, concrete lining it, capping it, and adding a rope pump.

Hand-Pump WellHand-Pump Well
• Built ~25-30 years ago by Germans.• Breaks down frequently- parts are expensive and hard to find; only 1
repairman for 50 mile radius.• As popular as central well when working.• Runs dry during part of the day during the dry season (rainy season??).

Immediate Water Problems to be Immediate Water Problems to be AddressedAddressed
• How to clean infected wells?
• How to find source of contamination in hand-pump well?– Need to find data for depth of aquifers,
direction of water flow, groundwater velocity, and soil profile of aquifer.
What the Village Wants from EWB What the Village Wants from EWB (Water)(Water)
• Clean water to drink.
• Central well water pumped to a water tank, that is gravity fed to 5 taps distributed around central well (~40-100 ft away from well).
• Upgrade well being dug for nursery (being built), and clinic (to be built) to same proposed system as central well so taps will be available for school children and clinic (in Oct-Dec).
• Build concrete slabs next to wells for washing clothes.
• Note: GLOVE plans to dig, concrete line, and add rope pumps for two new/upgraded wells.
SanitationSanitation
SanitationSanitation• Use pit latrines to defecate, except rainy season
(3 months) when they “go” out back of their homes.
• Pit latrine collapses during rainy season. It is buried, and a new one is dug following the rainy season.
• Villagers are interested in more sustainable, hygienic options.
• Not addressed-hand washing (Haddy?) and animal fecal matter.
