On October 25-30, O.Koshkina, Site Biodiversity Expert, participated in a training workshop ‘Migratory Approach to the Conservation and Sound Use of Waterfowl and Semi-Aquatic Birds and Wetlands’, held by Wetlands International in cooperation with the Association for Biodiversity Conservation in Kazakhstan (ABCK) for Central Asian AEWA countries (in Astana and Korgalzhyn village, as hosted by the Korgalzhyn SNR).

3. Increased stakeholder awareness and support

• On September 11, the 2010 Flamingo Festival took place in Korgalzhyn village. On September 16, the Festival was held at the Oblast level, in Kokshetau.

•On September 27, the project activities in ecotourism were presented during a side event during the 6th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and Pacific.

On May 25-26, the National Student Debate Tournament took place as hosted by the Gumilev Eurasian University.On November 06-07, the same university hosted municipal debate tournament ‘Biodiversity is the Life We All Need’.

On June 4, republican and municipal mass media made a tour to the Teniz-Korgalzhyn

project site 4. The republican mass media then covered issues of the Korgalzhyn SNR, as well as issues of the biodiversity conservation in the project site.

•The existing Nature Museum of the Alakol SNR was refurbished and modernized to enable delivery of training courses and excursions.

• New exhibits were produced and installed the Nature Museum, wall painting was renovated and now the walls demonstrate views of the Alakol PA, dioramas and tables were also produced.

•On July 15, there was a presentation of the the renovated Nature Museum of the Alakol SNR.

Further integration of wetland conservation issues into school curricula in three project sites Ural River delta

•Together with the Institute of Advanced Training for Teachers the project made a presentation of ‘Teaching Wetlands Lessons’ to teachers of chemistry, biology and geography. •A workshop for schoolchildren was delivered in the Young Naturalist Station to pilot optional ecology lessons with a focus on wetlands conservation. The workshop was attended by members of Young Naturalist and Ornithology groups as well as other schoolchildren from Altynsarin school.•The dissemination of the Ecology training programme resulted in the introduction of ecology lessons in the project site schools. One lesson per week will be delivered in 5-6-7 grades.

Further integration of wetland conservation issues into school curricula in three project sites Alakol-Sassykkol lakes

The project provided assistance to Atameken Ecoclub for its participation in the oblast ecological contest devoted to the World Environment Day. Atameken team took 3rd place in exhibition category, 1st place for a lesson on natural resources conservation and Grand Prix for an essay on the conservation of wetlands.

During the year the pilot schools in AS project site delivered demonstration lessons and workshops to implement the wetlands conservation training programme. On August 20, the ASNR hosted sectional lessons on ‘Implementation of Ecotourism in PAs’ and ‘Building New Ecological Thinking through Children’s Ecological Movement’. The sessions were attended by teachers from 17 schools of the AS project site and 22 schools from other areas.

Further integration of wetland conservation issues into school curricula in three project sites Teniz-Korgalzhyn lakes

Together with the methodological section of Korgalzhyn rayon education authority the project monitored implementation of wetlands curricula in schools of Korgalzhyn rayon. The training programmed has been integrated in the curricula of all schools except for Sabundy school. The school is beyond the project site, however, the school administration committed to implement the programme in 2010-2011 academic year.

Implementation of wetlands training programme is continuously monitored in the project site schools. For this 5 schools were visited from the beginning of 2010-2011 academic year (2 schools in Korgalzhyn village, schools in Maishukur, Zhanteke and Shalkar villages). There were meetings with deputy directors of schools to discuss inclusion of wetlands training programmes into the tariffication of school programmes. Monitoring was performed on September 7-8.

For effective implementation of the strategy the project issued the following printed outputs: two modules ‘Wetlands Flora in Kazakhstan’ and ‘Water World of Kazakhstan’ for schoolchildren under the dedicated wetlands conservation curricula.

Presentations and training workshops were delivered for pilot school teachers in three project sites. After implementing the ecoeducation programme and modules there are plans to hold a nation-wide contest among teachers from the pilot schools.

Development of Alternative and Sustainable Livelihoods – Phase 5

Project Monitoring In 2010, the project team together with the Fund of

Financial Support to Agriculture and GEF SGP monitored microcrediting and grant projects in three project sites.

Monitoring reports were prepared to present the implementation status and progress of the microcrediting projects.

The projects are in line with the project goals and objectives.

The Project developed a Framework Plan for Sustainable Use of Productive Landscapes Surrounding PAs

(case study of Teniz-Korgalzhyn, Alakol-Sassykkol lakes and Ural River delta with adjacent Caspian coast).

The Framework Plan is a document which brings together economy sectors affecting the biodiversity and it is a strategic action plan for the conservation of wetlands and surrounding areas.

Sustainable Fishery Management Programme was prepared with a view to implement sustainable fishery management practice in URD. The Programme has reconciled with the Fishery Committee and at the moment it is being reconciled at the site level.

‘Specifics of Game Management in Wetlands and Game Management Planning’ Guideline has been drafted to disseminate sustainable game management.

Implementation of Tabigi Orta Microcrediting Programme

On August 5, 2010, the Committee for Forestry and Hunting and the Fund for Financial Assistance to Agriculture signed a Cooperation Agreement to implement the Microcrediting Programme.

Programme duration:

August 2010 – August 2015

Programme envelope: USD 940,000.

The Programme is intended to

cover villages in the surroundings

of 24 PAs in Kazakhstan.

Project’s Approaches to Implement Sustainable Fishery Management for a Project’s Approaches to Implement Sustainable Fishery Management for a Demonstration Site, Koshkarkol LakeDemonstration Site, Koshkarkol Lake

Conceptual approaches to sustainable fishery management include: introduction of sustainable fishery management indicators, improvement of methods for assessing optimal allowable catch, minimal allowable catch, fishing intensity, creation of conditions for fish stock reproduction and community-based fishery management as well as improvement of fishery legislation.

The Concept was based on the FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries implemented internationally.

The Project approaches were summarized in the Guidelines: Sustainable Fishery Management at Koshkarkol Lake, issued in Kazakh and Russian.

1. Eight rural water users’ cooperatives have been established in AS project site (there are plans to bring them together into water users’ associations);

2. A digger and a welding machine were purchased and handed over to Zhagatal cooperative;

3. Bushes and small forest were extracted at the area of 5 ha, 4.5 km of channel was cleaned, 3.3 km collector was cleaned, 18 km of channel was cut and levelled, and 4 dam beans were repaired.

4. Water overflows from the supply channel were reduced, irrigation schedules were normalized and the irrigating draft was reduced from the Tentek river according to the project’s recommendations (by a factor of 1.5).

6. Production of vegetables and cucurbit crops at the area of 3 ha using plastic mulch film. Implemented by DAN Farm

Results: 1) with slow water absorption and lasting water conservation in the ribs the water

consumption was proven to reduce by 30-35%; 2) due to longer vegetation period by 25-45 days the maturation was accelerated and the

productivity doubled; 3) the crops were irrigated 8-9 times rather than 21-23 times; 4) the productivity increased by 2.5 times and the maturation reduced by 20-25 days; 5) the profit from 3 ha is equal to the profit of soy cultivation at 40 ha.

Sustainable Agriculture Projects

1. Total number of sustainable agriculture projects: 17 projects, including 13 grant projects and 4

microcrediting projects.

2. Seven 1 kW solar generators and one 3 kW solar generator were installed during Phase 1.

3. Phase 2 included sustainable agriculture activities (rehabilitation of abandoned and degraded land, pasture enhancement, water supply, assistance in establishing Rural Associations of Water Users and repair of irrigation systems, restoration of distant pasture grazing, etc.).

4. Implementation of environmentally benign soil degradation control technologies at the northern shore of Alakol lakeLand Degradation Control Programme was developed and implemented. The Programme is intended to increase degraded land productivity by sowing adapted to local conditions perennial grass species at the area of 300 ha and using minimum treatment, arranging pasture rotation and using alternative energy sources. 6. Reducing impact of fires on wetlands in the Alakol-Sassykkol project site1.Volunteer fire brigades were established in 8 rural districts, procedures were set up for coordination among rayon Akimat, emergency authorities, conservation entities, local communities and farms.2.Backpack fire extinguishers were handed over to the volunteer fire brigades and Alakol SNR staff. 3.The Project provided assistance in organizing and delivering a training workshop on steppe fire control techniques and fire safety requirements, etc. There are plans to hold an experience sharing workshop and invite other project PAs to participate.
