Gift ideas for gardeners aboundby Kristina Gabalski

There is an abundance of wonderful gifts available for the gardener on your holiday shopping list. Here are just a few ideas to inspire you for the 2014 holiday gift-giving season.

Gift boxes and baskets for gardeners are fun and beau-tiful to assemble and you can customize the size to fit your price range. Well-made garden tools such as by-pass pruners are always welcome. Knee pads can be added as well as seeds and perhaps a bag of potting soil would be appreciated by gardeners as they gear up for next year’s growing season. Little luxuries like hand soap and moistur-izer also make nice additions.

Garden bags for collecting garden and yard debris are a thoughtful gift and very han-dy. Fiskars makes a 30 gallon pop-up gardening container which is widely available. The container folds for storage and can be easily transported around the yard to where it is needed. Additionally, the con-tainer has drain holes in the

There is an almost endless variety of gardening books out there including ones on botany, landscape design, plant care, even cookbooks for making use of garden produce. Gorgeous coffee-table books filled with inspiring photos will be treasured for a lifetime by passionate gardeners.

Another great idea is a gar-den journal. I always think I’m going to remember ideas and experiences from growing sea-son to growing season, but I rarely do. One company makes a gardening journal which can aid in planning and record keeping as well as document-ing your horticultural endeav-

ors. The journal has space to log your work and includes lots of gardening information such as hardiness zones. It also has design grids and adhesive la-bels for personalizing sections.

Finally, don’t forget the value of your time. You can give per-sonalized garden-related “gift certificates” to help a friend or loved one with chores like weeding, dividing perennials, planting, or even help in creat-ing a new garden bed. Your time and effort will be appreci-ated by the recipient and will mean quality and productive time spent together for both of you.

hard-shell base and is tear and mildew resistant.

If you know a gardener who enjoys growing flowers for cut-ting and making bouquets and arrangements, a beautiful vase makes a lovely gift. Include a quality pair of flower sheers and floral preservative to round-out the gift. You could also pres-ent the vase filled with a fresh bouquet of flowers or seasonal greens and berries.

Don’t forget that the children on your list might also appreciate garden-related items. Their own tools, wheelbarrow, hoe or rake might spark an interest in digging in the dirt and growing things as well as add to their enjoyment of the outdoors and nature. I was surprised how much a simple pair of child-sized gardening gloves inspired my young son to get out and help with yard work. He especially loves clearing the yard and garden of brush and large weeds.

Gardeners are often-times bird-lovers and there are many bird-related items that can add interest to the garden and attract beautiful and pest-eradicating songbirds to the backyard. Bird feeders, birdhouses and bird-

baths make charming garden accents and can add much to the enjoy-ment of the yard. If you give a bird feeder, you might consider including a large bag of birdseed. Local feed stores even offer their own special blends.

Holiday gatherings are good times for ancestry research(StatePoint) Amidst the gifts, meals and parties of the holiday season, one word takes precedence -- family. There’s no better time to begin learning about family roots, especially as you’re gathered together in celebration. And doing so is easier than ever.

While researching family history or exploring ethnic roots was once a task-heavy chore, filled with hours of library visits, inter-views or public records inquiries, now you can more easily pur-sue genealogical information thanks to new technology tools, such as mobile apps, social media and even Ancestral DNA tests that enable you to find family stories you may not have known about.

Liven up the holidays and connect with those who mean the most by sitting down and chatting about family history. Here are some pointers to get started:•Start with what you know: Using a website like Ancestry.com, or the Ancestry app (available on iOS and Android), enter the information you know into your family tree. Upload photos to preserve memories. Don’t have all the facts? Don’t worry. This is just the start of your quest.•Take a DNA test: DNA isn’t just for TV shows and professional detectives. You now can be your own detective. Get your ethnic breakdown by percentage, such as 50 percent Irish and 50 per-cent Native American, and find out who else may be related to you with tools such as AncestryDNA. On average, folks taking the test have 60 matches to 4th -- or closer -- cousins in their results.•Chat with relatives at family gatherings: Over the holidays, dive into your family history with relatives. Consider gifting them family history resources like a DNA test. Record any interviews, particularly with the elderly, and take detailed notes. Ask every-one to bring photo albums and heirlooms. Any documents you create or collect you can attach to your online family tree for preservation. •Look at the ancestry hints in your family tree: Ancestry provides hints about possible relatives to populate your family tree. These clues could give valuable insight into your family’s legacy and connect you with lost relatives. •Share your findings: Whether it’s at the next family reunion, or as a belated holiday gift wrapped and framed, share your find-ings with your family for a better understanding of your collective heritage. Plenty of websites offer printing services, so consider the perfect stocking stuffer: a calendar, book, poster or other gift that will bring more meaning to the holidays. Encourage family to try the app and fill in their own family tree.

For more researching tips, or to get started on your own search, visit www.Ancestry.com.
