Lenten Book Study: "Reaching Out: Three Movements of the Spiritual
Life" by Henri Nouwen
This Lent season Pastor David will be hosting a Tuesday lunchtime book
study on the classic Christian devotional text "Reaching Out" by Henri
Nouwen.
Originally published in 1975, this bestseller is one of Nouwen's most famous texts and has been
continuously in print for over 40 years. In the book, the author creates wonderful illustrations of how the
inner life is mended by recognizing and acting on its connection with others.
The author, Henri Nouwen (1932-1996), was a Catholic priest and world-renowned academic for his
work in the fields of Clinical Pastoral Education and Pastoral Theology. While regarded as an engaging
professor, lecturer, and public speaker, the career pursuit that best reflects Nouwen's life was as a staff
chaplain for the L'Arche Daybreak: a residential community for persons with disabilities and their
caretakers.
Nouwen's list of works includes 42 published books plus a score of academic articles, and an ever-
growing number of posthumous compilation books based on his Christian devotionals.
The Three Movements of the Spiritual Life expounded in this book include: 1) From Loneliness to
Solitude; 2) From Hostility to Hospitality; and 3) From Illusion to Prayer.
Our Lenten Book Study will meet every Tuesday in the church library from Noon - 1pm beginning on
March 5th. The Discipleship Committee has purchased 10 paperback copies of the book so that if you
would like to participate you can pick one up from the church. "Reaching Out" is also available to
purchase on iBooks, Kindle and other e-readers for $10. Additionally, three copies are available to
borrow through the Adams County public library.
Peace,
Pastor David

Sources of Strength Initiative We want to let all of you know that this month, Westminster Presbyterian will be starting our Sources of Strength initia-tive. Our community has been touched by suicide three times already this year, and we want to provide everybody with support and help in developing inner strength to help us all in times of trouble. We will be meeting right here, immedi-ately after the dinner, for about an hour. This program is open to everybody, of all ages, in our community. If you, or anyone you know, could use this kind of support, please come next month on March 21. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to expand the program to two evenings a month, after both community dinners.

THE POWER OF PRAYER
How do we help our neighbors know that God is here for them, that He hasn’t forgot-ten them, that He loves them?
On Sunday, March 3rd, the Celebrations Committee will hang a banner and a box on the fence between the church parking lot and the park. The box will hold cards and waterproof pens. The banner will read…
WE PRAY FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD – LET US PRAY FOR YOU, TOO!
We are inviting our neighbors to write their prayers down and attach them on the wall. The prayer cards will be routinely gathered and shared among the congregation so we
can give a voice to our neighbors’ prayer requests, their concerns and their joys.
Through our prayers we will continue to bring the Good News of the Gospel to our neighbors.
“My prayer today is that we’ll feel the loving arms of God wrapped around us, and will know in our hearts that He will never forsake us as we trust in Him.” Billy Graham
An Updated Church Directory is Now Available
Please pick up your copy from the table by the front door if you haven’t already. They include the names of the folks who will be joining the church in the next few weeks.
KING Soopers Gift Cards
Great job, WPC family! During the period from 12/30/2018 to 1/26/2019 you reloaded $3,945.00 onto your King Soopers Gift Cards, the highest monthly amount we've achieved in many months. Combined with the $3,205.00 from the prior month, we received a rebate check for $357.50 from King Soopers for the two months. I still have two cards worth $2.50 each available for purchase. If you are interested please contact me. Keep up the good work! - Deb Dougherty
Congratulations to our new
members! Hope and Hannah Smith
and Jordan Tufford completed the
Confirmation Class and joined the
church on February 17th.
A Hand Up, not a Hand Out
Cold Weather Care
Mission: Providing life-saving shelter and support for the fami-
lies and individuals in Adams County during the cold months
of October to April.
Vision: Equipping and empowering people to regain control of
their lives by moving toward self-sufficiency; providing a hand
-up, not a hand-out.
WARM BEDS. GOOD MEALS. CASE MANAGEMENT.
We provide services that intervene in the road towards chronic homelessness. Each person reclaimed from chronic homelessness saves our community over $15,000 per year in resources. We lovingly provide emergency shelter, meals and case manage-ment. CWC is the only shelter in Adams County serving families as well as single men and women.
Daylight Savings Time Starts on March 10th
Remember to set your clocks forward. Otherwise, we’ll see
you for coffee and fellowship.
Why do we have to pay per capita? I’ve heard this question at least a thousand times, and in spite of the number of times the question is asked, the answer is always the same. “Because.”
That’s easy to say, but the rationale behind per capita giving is more involved.
Per Capita literally means “for each head,” and it’s essentially a “per-person” fee paid to the denomination to keep the denomination running. For a lot of folks, that seems like carrying coal to Newcastle. Why does the denomination need our money? What difference does it make if our church does or doesn’t give to this fund?
The denomination needs the giving of every church because giving is an act of faith. Yes, there are endowments and investments and a whole lot of churches pay their per capita without fail, and yes, the giving by a lot makes up for the lack of giving by a few. But it’s important to remember that per capita is the primary source of funding for the Office of the General Assembly, and it is through participation in per capita giving that nearly 10,000 PCUSA congrega-tions equitably share the costs of the work of the wider church. It also supports Denver Presbytery and the Synod of the Rocky Mountains.
Giving is a holy discipline. When the disciples went out into the world to share the Good News, they relied upon the generosity of the churches they planted to support their work. Furthermore, they encouraged those new churches to set aside a collection for the widows and orphans, the hungry and helpless, the bro-ken and bereft. It is our call as Christians and as Presbyterians to share in the ministry of all our churches, to fairly pay those who serve Christ at all denomi-national levels, and to offer compassion and support to our sisters and brothers in need.
Why do we have to pay per capita? Because we care about the future of our churches.
Because we care about each other. Because we are still being sent into the world to share the glorious Good News of Jesus ’ life, death and resurrec-tion. Because we are under grace, and it is from there that we can see how dy-namic our graciousness can be.
- Transitional Presbytery Pastor, Rev. Dana Hughes
The Per Capita cost this year is $32 per member.
