Make Your Summer Work For You!

Out of school for the summer? This might seem like a time for kicking back and unwinding after the school year, but it’s actually a great opportunity to start building that resume to help you impress the college of your choice. Your plans can be more than simply getting a summer job; there are a number of activities that can help you stay active and gain valuable experience over the summer months.

Work

Employment is one of the most practical ways to build your resume and impress colleges. Even if working during the school year is not an option, there are often seasonal establishments such as summer camps that look for help specifically during the

Page 2: Westlake High School May/June 2020 College and Career ... · same resume that will potentially help you land your first big job after college. Helpful links: ... (askme@csmd.edu and

summer months. Any job is good, but working in a leadership position or in an academic area would be ideal. The more a job challenges you, the more it builds the skills that colleges and future employers are interested in seeing in applicants.

Intern

Choosing what to do with your vacation can have a significant impact on your future. Whether you've finalized your career path or not, participating in a summer internship program will move you forward in many ways towards a viable and meaningful future. Summer internships for high school students are designed to provide valuable on-the-job experience for young people who are just starting to explore career options. These programs can be a fun and exciting first step toward furthering your education and figuring out what direction you want to take in life.

Applying for, participating in, and completing a summer internship as a high school student will give you the confidence and skills you need to understand the world of the "job search." It will allow you to explore a wide variety of career options including marketing, design, nursing, accounting, or something else. It will propel you into the world of networking. And it will give you an impressive entry for your resume—the same resume that will potentially help you land your first big job after college.

Volunteer

Do good. Community service is another great way to gain some valuable work and leadership experience. Nonprofits such as soup kitchens and animal shelters are always looking for volunteers, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find a volunteer organization near you that could use an extra pair of hands for a few hours a week during the summer.

Take a Class

'Summer school' doesn’t always have to be a bad thing, and colleges may look kindly upon applicants who take the initiative to

further their education over the summer. You can check out your local community college to take an additional class.

Summer Enrichment Programs

Along with summer classes, enrichment programs can be another valuable and educational summer experience. Investigate the

types of summer enrichment programs offered by local youth groups or area colleges and universities. Many of these

organizations have residential or day camps for high school students focused on specific topics such as music, creative writing,

science, engineering and a variety of other areas of interest. These programs are a good way to explore and gain experience in

fields you may want to study in college.

Visit websites for colleges that interest you and look into their summer programs for high school students. Some

colleges will have general programs, but others may have very specialized programs for subjects like engineering, computer

science, music, and many other topics .Helpful link: http://studenteducationprograms.com/

Visit Colleges

It almost goes without saying that campus visits should be part of any college applicant’s summer plans. Of course, while these

visits are a priority when considering which colleges to apply to, it is important to remember that they should be just one part of

your summer equation. A few campus tours don’t constitute a summer’s worth of experience; they should be included in your

plans, along with other resume-building activities and experiences, in order to set you apart from your fellow applicants. Visit

college websites for more information about visits to your favorite campuses.

Prep for the SAT/ACT

Standardized tests are an important part of the admissions equation at most of the country's highly selective colleges. If you've

taken the SAT or ACT and your scores aren't what you think you'll need to get into your top choice colleges, then the summer is

a great time to work through an exam preparation book or take a test prep class.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

Virtual Open House! This event is being held on May 13th at 5pm. Students can RSVP here on our website: https://www.csmd.edu/apply-register/credit/campus-open-house-urs/?utm_source=csmd&utm_medium=homeslider&utm_campaign=homeslider. This event is ideal for graduating seniors who plan to attend CSM this fall or are considering doing so.

Application and Testing Process:

1. Apply online at www.csmd.edu, there is no fee. Upon successful completion of your application an acceptance letter containing your student ID number via the email address that is provided on your application. Typically you will receive this email within 1-2 business days for completing your application. 2. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1 of your senior year. CSM’s school code is 002064. If your application is not completed, your financial aid cannot be processed.

3. Since placement testing will not be available throughout the summer, students can place using any combination of the following:

• High School Transcript Review: We can use students' transcripts/GPA for placement even though transcripts are incomplete for their senior year. Students should arrange to have their transcripts sent to [email protected] for evaluation. Upon evaluation, an enrollment coordinator will create a course sequence and contact the student.

• SAT/ACT Scores: Students may now send their downloaded PDF score report from their SAT/ACT exams directly to [email protected]. Enrollment coordinators receive a list of students who submit scores so that we can plan their courses and contact the students.

• Dual Enrollment: Students who have taken the placement test for on-campus dual enrollment or who are dual enrolling in math/English classes in the high school can receive placement for those and other subjects accordingly.

• AP Scores: Students can download their AP score report and email it to [email protected] to receive both the credit and placement based on qualifying scores for English and math AP exams.

4. Orientation and Registration. Complete the Online Orientation session by logging into your [my.csmd.edu] my CSMD account. Once you have logged into your myCSMD account, click on New Student Orientation on the right side of the page.

NCAA Eligibility Center Information

Don’t have the GPA or college entrance exam scores needed for a four-year college?

Think junior colleges! Many junior colleges across the country have full athletic programs including tackle football. Visit

www.njcaa.org and find out where you can use your talents while building your academic skills for a four-year college or

university program.

Juniors: It is time to register for the NCAA Eligibility Center if you play to participate in Division I or Division II level of play in

college. Visit www.eligibilitycenter.org to register with a credit card. If you are a student receiving free or reduced lunch or

participate in federal trio programs, ask your counselor or Career Center Advisor about fee waivers.

1. Ask your counselor to send your transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center at the end of your junior year.

2. Take the ACT or SAT and use the code “9999” to have your official scores sent directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

3. Check with your counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate on time with your class and have the required

amount of core courses. Use the www.CoreCourseGPA.com program to help with this process.

Seniors: Request final amateurism certification beginning April 1, and ask your counselor to submit your final transcript with

proof of graduation.

For a Complete List of NCAA Courses:

Visit www.eligibilitycenter.org and enter the site as an NCAA College-Bound Student-Athlete. Navigate to the “Resources”
