Fishing Fun I have been going on a fishing course over the last 6 months

in Romsey where they have three different lakes containing

different fish. The idea of the course is to learn new skills and

become better at fishing. They are also helping me with con-

centration, listening skills and are helping me to become more

independent.

I have learnt how to attach lines to the rod, reel in fish of dif-

ferent sizes, types of bait and

how they are used and behaviour

patterns of fish.

The picture below shows me hav-

ing caught my first fish, a carp

weighing 15lbs. On that day we

used PVA bags with food pellets

in as bait. I used a bite alarm

that told me I had a bite. My in-

structor Tom came and helped

me reel the carp in. After taking

the picture I had to throw the fish

back in the lake. I have managed

to achieve starter level one and

level two in the angling skills

award.—Nathan Carr (Year 10)

Making a Splash Year 8 pupil Alicia Peinado qualified to

take part in the Spanish Swimming

Championship celebrated in Barcelona

from 19-21st July. She swam 4 events

(100, 200 and 800m free and 100m

back) and qualified for three finals

achieving 1 fifth and 2 sixth places, all of

them with personal best times. Well

done Alicia!

Lower school in the

Leaves On the 16th of October, for deep learn-

ing day, Year R enjoyed exploring and

investigating Autumn by making animal

habitats, finding different leaves, mak-

ing an autumn colour palette and worm

camouflage. Throughout the day, they

learnt lots about seasonal changes.

Westgate Alumni Miss Fiztgerald has bee busy setting up a

Westgate Alumni. So far, we have interest

from over 70 people spanning across 6 dif-

ferent decades! We look forward to hearing

more about it very soon.

An exclusive interview with Mrs Dean! After a half term in the position of Head Teacher, we thought it

was time to get to know Mrs Dean: Q: What is your favourite book and why? A: I really like ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ because it’s very cul-

turally rich and beautifully written. Q: What is your favourite thing about Westgate? A: I love how well everyone gets along; pupils and adults enjoy

learning together and support each other well. Q: Do you have any major changes coming up? A: No major changes at the moment but I’ve made a pupil lead-

ership budget so the team can make choices on what the school

needs. For example, when we have non school uniform days the

pupils will have more of a say as to where the money that is

raised goes. Pupils are regularly joining our meetings to talk

about ideas and make plans. Most recently, they've asked us to

reduce the amount of printing in school so we are looking in to

this and will include this in next year's planning. Q:What was your favourite subject when you were at school? A: When I was at Secondary school it was Maths, but when I

went to do my A' Levels, it changed to English. I really enjoyed

taking part in music groups, too. Q: What is your favourite song and film? A: I have so many favourite songs that it’s hard to choose but I

really like Jazz music, as well as songs from other genres and

groups including Guns ‘N’ Roses, Nirvana and even Opera! Clare

Teal is my favourite singer and I also really enjoy listening to the

'William Tell Overture' at full volume! My favourite film would

have to be “'The English Patient' - it's so beautifully pro-

duced. But I also love the 'Shrek' films and have been watching

a lot of 'Cars' recently because of my two year old!

A lunchtime with Becs Murchie

Q: What’s your favourite meal?

A: Southern Fired Chicken Burger

Q: What’s your favourite film?

A: True Romance

Q: What famous person would you like to meet?

A: Tom Harding—He is so buff.

Q: If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

A: Buy a massive camper van and travel the world!

Q: What’s your favourite thing about Westgate?

A: Mr Searle’s cakes (he owes me a chocolate

cake!)

Q: Who’s your biggest inspiration?

A: Jeremy Corben

This Months Puzzle

See if you can answer the following riddles. The

answers are at the bottom of this page:

1) I’m tall when I’m young, I’m short when I

die—what am I?

2) What word becomes shorter when you add

two letters to it?

3) They have not flesh, nor feathers, nor

scales, nor bone. Yet they have fingers and

thumbs of their own. What are they?

4) What travels around the world but stays in

one spot?

5) What is so delicate, that saying it breaks

its name?

Help for the

Homeless Three pupils went to Trinity

House in Winchester which is a

homeless shelter. They told us:

“We went there to deliver the

toiletry donations from all years

in the school, that people at Trini-

ty House were all very grateful

for. While we were there we had

a tour around the place by one of

the staff members. The place

had so many great features in-

cluding: a GP, kitchen, toilet,

shower, and a cupboard full of

clothes and shoes. They have a

quiet room where you can have a

rest if you have been sleeping

rough the previous nights. They

have various groups they can join

if they want to and there are over

50 volunteers that help and sup-

port the homeless by giving them

food. They also sit down and help

them find a job, and help them to

write a CV if they have few or no

GCSE’s”

The trio have done an amazing

job in supporting those less fortu-

nate. Thank you to everyone who

made donations! We look for-

ward to seeing what else the

Charity Group do throughout the

rest of the year!
