On Friday, in a state government programme, Tawde distributed 100 "talking book" volumes to 21 schools for the visually- handicapped in Maharashtra, prepared in collaboration with National Association for Blind (NAB).Later, he presented sets of 100 books to 21 readers' groups at a function in Gokhale Education Society College in Borivali to mark the day. Blood banks stock up for lean period STAFF REPORTER Mumbai Rear Admiral Ravneet Singh handed over the Command of Western Fleet to Rear Ad- miral RB Pandit on Saturday. Rear Admiral Singh had assumed Command of Western Fleet on 10 Oct, 2015. During his tenure, the Western Fleet was deployed for several operational de- ployments including nu- merous multinational exer- cises with friendly foreign navies. The Fleet also un- dertook overseas deploy- ments to Colombo, Male, Persian Gulf, Western Indi- an Ocean littoral nations and East/South Africa. The Fleet had also partici- pated in the International Fleet Review off Visakhapat- nam. Rear Admiral Ravneet Singh is slated to take over the responsibility of Chief of Staff, Western Naval Com- mand on promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral later in the month. Rear Admiral Pandit was commissioned into the Indi- an Navy in Jul 1984. An alumnus of the National De- fence Academy, Khadak- wasla, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Col- lege of Naval Warfare, Mum- bai and the Royal College of Defence Studies, London, the Admiral is a specialist in Anti Submarine Warfare. The Admiral has held sev- eral key appointments in his naval career including Com- mand of missile corvette INS Nirghat, frigate INS Vin- dhyagiri and the Landing Platform Dock INS Jalash- wa. On promotion to Flag Rank, the Admiral held cov- eted appointments of the As- sistant Chief of Naval Staff (Foreign Cooperation and In- telligence) at Naval Head- quarters and Chief of Staff Southern Naval Command, prior assuming Command of the Western Fleet. RAJIV SHARMA Mumbai With the idea of providing dietary supplements to AIDS infected patients, a suburban NGO has adopted 100 patients from Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali to pro- vide them with the required nutrition. According to Dr Girish Trivedi of AIDS Combat In- ternational, there is a large number of AIDS infected pa- tients who are taking treat- ment at this hospital and many of them are in need for nutritional support. “This is also important for these patients because they need the nutritional support as part of their treatment,” he explained. The NGO provides dal, pulses and other food grain items as part of this dietary supplement and this helps in building the immunity of the patients, the doctor said. “The biggest difficulty that the AIDS infected patients face is low immunity and which also causes complica- tions in their health condi- tion,” Dr Trivedi said. Hospital sources said that the activity is carried out every Wednesday by this group at the hospital and it also acts as a support system for their families. “In some cases, the AIDS victims are the only bread winners of the family and hence giving them the foodgrains also helps in running their households,” an official said. “The new line of medi- cines is a boon for such pa- tients and many of them are now able to live a longer life and a good quality of life,” Dr Trivedi said. At Shatabdi Hospital, these patients get free medicines and the treat- ment has helped to bring up their vital parameters, he added. Sources said that the good news is that there are very few fresh HIV cases in the city and this has largely hap- pened due to good coun- selling and awareness by various social and official groups. “Even the rate of mother-child transmission is less now because of proj- ects started at various major hospitals across the city,” an- other senior doctor said. According to Dr Trivedi, along with better treatment of AIDS infection, there is now greater acceptance of this disease in the society. “With proper medical treat- ment and nutritional sup- port, the patients are able to carry out all their routine activities and live a normal life,” he said. RAJIV SHARMA Mumbai Blood banks in the city are gearing for the upcoming lean period during the Di- wali vacations, when most of the colleges are closed and there are very few blood do- nation camps in the city. Sources said that colleges are a major source of blood for the city and there are sev- eral camps organised throughout the year. “Howev- er, most of the college stu- dents right now are currently busy with their exams and they will have their vacations after that,” said Vinay Shetty from Think Foundation. Therefore, most of the blood banks are in the process of or- ganising camps so that there is enough stock to last them through the vacations, he pointed out. “At the same time, professional colleges, like engineering and techni- cal, follow a different timetable and hence we are organising camps at these places at present,” he said. “The major worry for us is the shortage of blood platelets that are needed for the treatment of patients suf- fering from dengue, cancer and even burns,” Shetty said. Since the life of platelets is only five days, it becomes crucial to organise regular drives. Medical sources said that the planning for blood dona- tion should be done in such a way that the shortage peri- ods like summer vacations and Diwali vacations should not be a problem. “If the blood banks are aware that there are vacations coming up then they can draw up a timetable in a way that they are properly spaced out and blood is always available for the patients,” an activist said. Commenting on this issue, Sangeet Nair, a regular blood donor, said that it is the re- sponsibility of every person to ensure that he or she do- nates blood on a regular ba- sis. “The good thing about have a large population is that people can donate blood on a regular basis so that there is never any shortage situation and people do not have to run around for this crucial thing,” he said STAFF REPORTER Mumbai An unidentified man kid- napped a three-year-old girl, who was playing near her home in MIDC-Andheri, and raped her on Thursday evening. The girl was left cry- ing at the crime scene. The accused is still at large. According to the police, the whole incident of kidnap- ping is recorded on the CCTV which reveals that the ac- cused took the survivor be- hind a tempo and he is later seen walking freely from the crime scene. The matter came to light when few other kids, playing with the survivor, informed her parents that she was kid- napped by an unknown per- son. After which the parents started a search for the sur- vivor and later found her ly- ing abandoned and crying in pain behind a tempo where she was allegedly raped by the abductor. The accused took the sur- vivor with him on the pretext of giving her a chocolate. A case of kidnapping and rape has been registered at MIDC police station and the survivor was sent to KEM hospital, where she is recu- perating.“Now her condition is stable and recuperating fast,” said Dean of KEM hos- pital Dr Avinash Supe. Victim’s father is a fruit vendor, who stays with her family in a chawl in Andheri (East).
