The museums on both sides of the bridge tell of the history of the area and the NY Visitor Center has an excellent history of the rebuilding of this bridge in record time. T Sites of Interest Champlain Bridge The Champlain Bridge is the key visual site at the end of this section of the WNEG. The current bridge was opened in November 2011 a mere 23 months after the historic truss structure was closed when structural supports underwater were found to have deteriorated to an unacceptable level. The new bridge closely replicates the form of the original bridge but uses modern design criteria, including bike lanes and sidewalks, and construction techniques. This allows non- motorized travel between the historic sites on both side of the lake. Crown Point Historical Site This site is a short distance, less than ½ mile, from the WNEG the New York complex contains a major historic site with the remains of an English fort, the site of an earlier French fort, Ft. Frederick, and a museum that provides a full explanation of the history of the area. The grounds have many interpretive signs that guide the visitor throughout the grounds. On the opposite side of the road is a State Campground that has a lighthouse on the lake with a bronze plaque created by Rodin. Near the entrance to the park is a Visitor Center which also houses a large exhibit covering the history of the bridge. Chimney Point The museum on the Vermont side of the bridge is primarily dedicated to the history of the Native People who have lived in the area for many years as a result of the short distant across the lake at this location. The building of the bridge required a thorough archeological study of the area and this activity increased the depth of understanding of the rich history of the place. An effort is underway to create a two state park that will include the areas on both sides of the lake operating under a single management authority. Lake Champlain Maritime Museum The center of lake maritime knowledge is the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Its programs have included a complete mapping of the bottom of the lake, conducting archeological research, building replicable ships, conducting promotional and educational tours, supporting in house educational programs as well maintaining a wide ranging museum for visitors to experience. Tours can be arranged to visit under water ship wrecks and explore those sites via a remotely guided tethered submarine. The Lois McClure, a replica of a lake sailing freighter, is the museums flagship and makes visits throughout the lake. It has been as far as Buffalo and Quebec City. A gunboat is another replica that is usually at the museum for visitors to climb aboard and learn what sailing life was like years ago. About the Western New England Greenway The Western New England Greenway is a three state, two country bicycling route that connects to the New England Greenway in Norwalk, Connecticut thereby linking New York City to Montreal. The route is comprised primarily of public roads that have been selected for their ease of bicycling, scenic surroundings and interesting places to visit. The major metropolitan areas that the WNEG pass through are Burlington, Vermont and Montreal, Quebec. In each of these areas extensive bicycle path networks exist and are used. The Connecticut portion of the WNEG follows the Housatonic River north through gently rolling terrain marked by farmland and river views. The Massachusetts section is not very long but it is filled lovely New England towns, historic sites and interesting places to visit. Southern Vermont provides more, but short, hills and mountain views and gradually levels into the flat plains of Quebec following the Champlain Bikeway and Route Verte. Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership Safety Guidelines Motorists and bicyclists share scenic roads. Use caution on narrow, winding or unpaved roadway. Follow traffic laws and ride safely. Bicycles are vehicles by law and have the right to use public roads. You are responsible for operating your bicycle under all conditions. When cycling, please follow these guidelines: 1. WEAR A HELMET and cycling gloves. 2. Ride with the flow of traffic. 3. When using travel lanes, follow motor vehicle laws. Obey all traffic signs and signals. Do not cut corners. 4. Use clear hand signals when making turns or stopping. 5. Ride in a straight line at least 3 feet from parked cars or curbs. 6. If you must ride at night, use lights and reflectors. 7. Ride defensively! Be aware of motorists’ actions. 8. Be aware of train tracks and other road conditions. 9. Ride single file. 10. Carry items in panniers or a handle-bar pack. Disclaimer: Users assume all risks, inherent and not inherent, in the use of materials recommending routes of the Lake Champlain Bikeways network and all affiliated organizations, and individuals disclaim any and all liability on their part for damages or injuries to persons or property should they occur. Routes are chosen, designated and/or signed because: they are popular, or are preferred, or provide continuous routes to destinations, or are lightly traveled, or are scenic, or have more room for cars and bikes, or possess a combination of these attributes.
