By now I am sure a l l o f you have your Porsche on the road and enjoy ing Spr ingt ime in Michigan. As I am wr i t ing th is , the thunder and ra in are coming down qui te impress ive ly , but I keep say ing over and over in my head, “Apr i l showers br ing May f lowers” . Sure! Last weekend, the poor fo lks f rom the Audi Quat t ro c lub had the i r dr iv ing event at Grat tan and I be l ieve the to ta l ra in fa l l for that per iod was c lose to 5 inches. Do you

suppose those fo lks got good use out o f the i r Quat t ro 4 wheel dr ive systems??

Lets ta lk about our Grat tan event for a b i t . September, 18, 19, 20 are the dates and we have room for 85 par t ic ipants. Of the 85, we would l ike to have 15 new dr ivers for which the c lub wi l l prov ide inst ructors. Our event has been run for over 15 years and f rom the comments I have got ten f rom people f rom other c lubs (Chicago, RSR, SEM, etc . ) , the West Michigan c lubs runs a very “ t ight sh ip” . A lso, the “outs iders” th ink we are a pret ty n ice bunch of people. The reason for br ing ing up Grat tan th is ear ly is to t ry and get you to put us on your schedule ear ly . We have wel l over 400 members and most of you have never had your beloved Porsche on the t rack. Understand, the t rack wi l l not hur t your car . Your Porsche deserves to have at least one exper ience on the t rack. I f not for your sake, a t least th ink of your car ’s fee l ings. That ’s a l l I w i l l say for now, but p lant the seed in to your p lanning for September.

Dr iv ing season is upon us and you need to get ready (and RSVP) for the la te May (30 t h ) dr ive wi th John and Marsha l l Wal ters . They a lways have a sp i r i ted dr ive thru the h i l ls and dales of the Yankee Spr ings area. A lso, in June we wi l l have a midweek get together at the Gi lmore Museum in Hickory Corners on June 10 hosted by Rick Ri ley and Kur t Wir th . At the end of the month is the Spr ing Up to Traverse Ci ty th is year hosted by David and Beth Howard. A lways a del ight fu l weekend! !

I am done for now. Rain has s topped, so I guess I wi l l head of f to work . . .wi l l probably leave the Porsche in the garage for a l i t t le n icer day.

“ I t ’s get t ing Eas ier ! ”

The 2009 Jambalaya Cook Of f proved to be a very fun event for us . The work s tar ted ear ly in the morn ing get t ing the house ready for 30 guests . We vacuumed, dusted, wiped, baked, and h id the c lu t ter . Then, the PCA f lag was hung and the yard was raked, the garage was swept and more c lu t ter was h idden. At 6 :30 PM, we were ready wi th appet izers on the tab le and the judge’s c l ipboards wai t ing.

As people ar r ived, they brought the i r favor i te dr inks and the i r c rock pot . Th is year , Amber brought two t rays wi th Porsche cupcakes. 7 Recipes for Jambalaya ar r ived and the Judges were chosen. Gabi B lack l idge, Len Gawron, and Gary Buth had a tough t ime eva luat ing each un ique rec ipe. Af ter lo ts o f d iscuss ion, #4 became the Judge’s Choice and the t rophy went to Jer ry Arens.

The crowd then gathered around the crocks and numbered the i r p lates to 7 . Af ter tas t ing and sampl ing, everyone took a ba l lo t and ind icated the i r favor i te . #1 made i t by one vote and Gary Whi te took home People ’s Choice t rophy.

When the work was done, Terry and I cou ld re lax and open a brew or pu l l out the shot g lasses and Crème De Menthe to en joy a “s ip” or two. As several o f us remin isced wi th p ic tures f rom prev ious cook of fs s ince 1997, Michel le F isher found her 2 :30 AM photo en joy ing the race car in the garage. S ince we are a l l much o lder now, we knew that 2 :30 AM was probably not an opt ion anymore. Therefore, we assumed that i t was 2:30 AM somewhere and we proceeded to fee l young again . Mazat lan ’s smoother vers ion of Jose became a welcome v is i tor and even though Michel le was on ly “s ipp ing” , Lee Koning announced, “ I t is get t ing eas ier ! ” So wi th that , we ra ised the g lasses again !

Each year , Terry and I wonder how many rec ipes wi l l be entered. Wi l l there be enough food? Wi l l everyone be able to sample a l l the rec ipes? Because of a l l the at tendees and ent r ies , our cook of f is a lo t o f fun for us. Thanks to everyone who par t ic ipates by cook ing and/or vot ing. We fee l l ike th is event is not jus t for the Region, i t ’s for our f r iends!

Stuttgart . Everyth ing remained very qu ie t when today ’s Dr . Ing. h .c . F . Porsche AG estab l ished VW-Porsche-Ver t r iebsgesel lschaf t mbh, the VW-Porsche Sales Company, together wi th Volkswagenwerk AG, as i t was ca l led a t the t ime, in Apr i l 1969. Hold ing s tock capi ta l of DM 5 mi l l ion, the new company launched the s t ra tegy of success for two spor ts cars s t i l l carefu l ly he ld back f rom the publ ic pending the i r f ina l presentat ion: the VW-Porsche 914 and 914/6.

The es tab l ishment o f the VW-Porsche Sales Company marked the beginn ing of a t rue s tory o f success – and the for tunate end of a dramat ic development . Back in the mid-60s VW was look ing for a successor to i ts then ra ther outdated Type 34 spor ts coupe, bet ter known as the “Karmann Ghia” . At the same t ime Porsche was s t r iv ing to expand i ts pos i t ion in the market wi th a spor ts car in the promis ing segment beneath the 911.

Fac ing th is chal lenge Ferry Porsche and VW’s CEO Heinr ich Nordhof f agreed in spr ing 1966 on a jo int venture dest ined to benef i t both par t ies : Porsche was g iven the ass ignment by Volkswagen to develop a low-cost mid-engined spor ts car in tended to enter the market as a Volkswagen wi th four cy l inders and as a Porsche wi th a s ix-cy l inder boxer engine.

Wi th the development process cont inu ing at a good pace, the Board o f Management o f VW was suddenly conf ronted wi th a t rag ic change: Heinr ich Nordhof f d ied unexpected ly in 1968 and Kur t Lotz was appointed the new Chief Execut ive Of f icer . Lotz resc inded the cont ract agreed verba l ly and ins is ted on Volkswagen rece iv ing the sole and exc lus ive sa les r ights for the car be ing developed by Porsche. Af ter long and tough s t ruggles br ing ing the 914 to the br ink o f fa i lure more than once, the two companies agreed in a compromise to ca l l the new car the “VW-Porsche” and to market th is new model through a jo int sa les network.

The VW-Porsche 914 was presented at the Frankfur t Motor Show on 11 September 1969 as the f i rs t mid-engined spor ts car bu i l t in Germany in ser ies product ion. The combinat ion of the two brand names Volkswagen and Porsche never the less turned out to be an image prob lem for the new model ser ies commonly re fer red to by the press as the “Volksporsche” or “People ’s Porsche” . This was a par t icu lar d isadvantage for the 914/6 powered by the two- l i t re f la t -s ix car r ied over f rom the 911 T 2.0 . For despi te i ts outs tanding per formance, the 914/6 was hard ly accepted by most of Porsche’s ex is t ing customers.

The four-cy l inder VW-Porsche 914, on the other hand, became a genuine success in the market , account ing for a product ion vo lume of 115,631 un i ts unt i l the ser ies ceased product ion in spr ing 1976, and thus becoming the best -se l l ing spor ts car o f i ts t ime.

Most o f the cars bui l t were expor ted to the Uni ted States, where the 914 was marketed as a genuine, fu l ly - f ledged Porsche wi thout the VW pref ix .

Today the VW-Porsche 914 is acknowledged as a popular c lass ic suppor ted by numerous 914 c lubs the wor ld over . Par t icu lar ly the 914/6 bu i l t only 3 ,338 t imes is one o f the most sought -af ter col lec tor cars f rom Porsche.

The Porsche Museum is celebrat ing the 40th anniversary o f the 914 model ser ies wi th a rare spec ia l exhib i t on d isp lay f rom 9 Apr i l – 10 May 2009: the Porsche 914/8 wi th i ts 300-bhp e ight -cy l inder rac ing engine once owned by Ferry Porsche h imsel f . Wi th on ly two of these cars ever be ing bu i l t , one was presented to Ferry Porsche in 1969 as a spec ia l g i f t for h is 60th b i r thday.

ALTON, VA - Apr i l 25 - - Brumos Racing grabbed a cont rovers ia l pod ium f in ish in Saturday 's Rolex Grand-Am Spor ts Car Ser ies presented by Crown Roya l Cask No. 16 race a t V i rg in ia In terna t iona l Raceway, and the Farnbacher Lo les Rac ing Porsche GT3 f in ished four th in GT.

Dav id Donohue (Malvern, PA) and Darren Law (Phoen ix AZ) f in ished th i rd in the #58 Porsche Ri ley , tak ing advantage o f a la te caut ion tha t a l lowed Donohue to make up a seven-second def ic i t to the th i rd -p lace car .

When the green f lag fe l l w i th less than f ive minu tes remain ing, Donohue was s t i l l four th , now r ight beh ind the th i rd-p lace car . As they came th rough Turn 1B, Donohue bumped in to the rear o f Scot t Prue t t ís th i rd p lace Lexus Ri ley That made Pruet t 's car tw i tch back and for th and the Ford Dal lara o f Max Ange le l l i h i t Pruet t 's r igh t f ront corner and went sp inn ing o f f le f t . Prue t t spun s ideways, and Donohue went around h im to capture th i rd .

"Pruet t jus t s lowed more than I d id , " Donohue sa id . " I jus t go t in to the back o f h im, p re t ty hard I guess. I don ' t know i f I locked up ( the brakes) , bu t I cou ldn ' t go s ideways to avo id h im because Max (Angele l l i ) was there . Then they tang led r ight in f ront o f me and I avo ided Pruet t when he spun, and Max went o f f to the le f t . I don í t know why they are upset . "

The pod ium f in ished enabled Donohue and Law to remain co- leaders in the dr iver 's s tand ings wi th 60 po in ts each, and moved Porsche in to a t ie for the manufacturer ís s tand ings wi th Ford wi th 60 po in ts each.

" I ’m very , very happy w i th the ou tcome of th is race" sa id Law. "The win a t Daytona and the pod ium here puts us in the po in ts lead, which is what we’ re a iming to do for the season. I t was rough ou t there; i t was very hot (93 degrees F) and there was a lo t o f t ra f f i c . Bu t I th ink we were compet i t ive w i th everybody except maybe 01. The p i t s tops were cor rec t and the car was qu ick enough I fe l t l i ke I cou ld run wi th anybody. I brought i t in second p lace, the team d id a great job and Dav id fought h is way to the f ront . "

A day tha t s tar ted on the br ight s ide for the Penske Porsche Ri ley turned in to d isappoin tment for the Porsche works dr ivers , bu t even af ter fa l l ing back to 23rd, s t i l l managed a seventh p lace f in ish for dr ivers T imo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) .

"Af ter we d id our p i t s top and Romain go t in the car , he got a penal ty I do no t know about , " Bernhard sa id . "They (o f f ic ia ls ) sa id he got a long (s ide) another car on a res tar t , and the dr ive- th ru (penal ty ) under green pu t h im back.

"We were qu ick enough today to be on the pod ium, poss ib ly a v ic to ry bu t we had a p rob lem wi th the c lu tch . Somet imes when I downshi f t , i t d id no t engage and los t t ime. Once I los t three pos i t ions because of that . We are OK wi th the po in ts , but we had a car that cou ld have won the race. We wi l l ana lyze every th ing before the race next week ( in New Jersey) and we def in i te ly do be t ter there. "

The other Brumos Porsche en t ry , dr iven by JC France (Daytona Beach,

FL) and Joao Barbosa (Por tuga l ) f in ished e ighth .

The race was not so good for the Porsche GT teams. The Farnbacher Lo les Rac ing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup en t ry o f D i rk Werner (Germany) and Leh Keen (Char les ton, SC) f in ished four th by more than three seconds. F i f th in GT went to the Farnbacher Lo les Rac ing Porsche o f Er ic Lux (Wi l l iamsv i l le , NY) and Wol f Henz ler (Germany) .

The hardest -work ing team award went to the #67 TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup team of Jus t in Marks (Chico , CA) and Andy La l ly (Newpor t , NY) . Marks got caught in another car 's acc ident very ear ly in the race and the c rew worked on the car fo r 90 minutes be fore Marks was ab le to re jo in the race. But Marks bare ly made i t a round turn 1 when a mechanica l p rob lem sta r ted overheat ing h is eng ine, but qu ick th ink ing got Marks through a back ga te and he parked beh ind the race cont ro l tower . The crew came running over , repa i red the car in less than 10 minutes and he was ab le to re jo in the race aga in . For tunate ly , there was enough t ime fo r both dr ivers to comple te the min imum 30 minutes to earn po in ts . They f in ished 15th in GT.

"These c rew guys are the greatest , " La l ly sa id . "We cou ld have g iven up, bu t that 's no t the Porsche way. We wi l l do anyth ing i t takes to race ."

Round three o f the Rolex Grand-Am Ser ies takes p lace nex t week, May 3, a t New Jersey Motorspor ts Park , in Mi l l v i l le , New Jersey.

In h inds ight , i t 's apparent that the gas shocks of the 1970s h i t Det ro i t a t a t ime when they were par t icu lar ly vu l -nerable. They were a decadent

p innacles of the Det ro i t ar t were crudely engineered muscle cars. The mainst ream products were large, V8-powered, rear-wheel -dr ive sedans and s tat ion wagons. The Det ro i t market ing and engineer ing machinery d idn ' t com-prehend the appeal o f cars l ike the Volkswagen Beet le or the Datsun 240Z.

rea l ly open the door for the Japanese automakers.

Remember, Toyota and Honda were re la t ive p ipsqueaks in those days. They d id not have much more going for them in the Amer ican market p r io r to the f i rs t Arab o i l embargo than Ch inese auto-makers have today, o r Korean automak-ers d id 15 years ago. The o i l shocks, however , conv inced a huge and in f luen-t ia l cohor t o f Amer ican consumers to

g ive fue l -ef f ic ient Japanese cars a t ry . Equa l ly impor tant , the o i l shocks per-suaded some of the most aggress ive of Amer ica 's car dealers to t ry them.

The Det ro i t automakers be l ieved the Japanese could be s topped by impor t quotas. They in i t ia l ly d ismissed repor ts about the h igh qual i ty o f Japanese cars. They la ter assumed the Japanese cou ld never rep l ica te the i r low-cost manufactur ing sys tems in Amer ica. P lus they bel ieved in i t ia l ly tha t the low pro-duct ion cos t o f Japanese cars was the resul t o f automat ion and unfa i r t rad ing pract ices. (Undoubted ly , the cheap yesn was a b ig he lp. ) In any case, they f igured that the Japanese would be s tuck in a n iche o f smal l , economy cars and tha t the damage cou ld be con-ta ined as customers grew out o f the i r smal l car phase of l i fe .

They were wrong on a l l counts .

them. At GM, an execut ive named Alex Mair gave deta i led presentat ions on why Japanese cars were super ior to

less cos t ly to bu i ld . He set up a war room at GM's techn ica l center w i th d is-p lays showing how Honda dev ised low-cos t , h igh-qual i ty engine par ts , and how Japanese automakers des igned factor ies tha t were roughly ha l f the s ize of a GM plant but produced the same number o f vehic les.

the p iece of meta l in an engine that connects the p is ton to the crankshaf t . The one made by GM was bu lky and crudely shaped wi th b ig tabs on the ends. Workers assembl ing the engines would gr ind down those tabs so that the weight o f the p is ton and rod assembly would be balanced. By contrast , the connect ing rod made by Honda was smal ler , th inner , and a lmost l ike a p iece of scu lpture. I t d idn ' t have ugly tabs on the end, because i t was de-s igned to be proper ly ba lanced r igh t out o f the forge. Mai r 's po int was s imple: I f you pay carefu l a t tent ion to des ign ing an e legant , l ightweight connect ing rod, then the engine wi l l be l igh ter and qui -eter , the car a round the eng ine can be more ef f ic ient , the brakes wi l l have less mass to s top, and the engine wi l l fee l more responsive because i t has less weight to move.

Another person who warned GM ear ly on about the nature of the Japanese cha l lenge was J im Harbour . In the ear ly 1980s, he took i t in to h is head to t ry to te l l GM's execut ives just how much more ef f ic ient Japanese fac tor ies rea l ly were , measured by hours o f labor per

car p roduced. The product iv i ty gap was

about twice as ef f ic ient . GM's pres ident a t the t ime responded by barr ing J im Harbour f rom company proper ty .

By the la te 1980s, GM's cha i rman, Roger Smi th, had f igured out that h is company had someth ing to learn f rom the Japanese. He just d idn ' t know what i t was. He poured b i l l ions in to new,

inc lud ing an ef for t to bu i ld an exper i -menta l " l ights ou t" factory that had a l -most no hour ly workers. He entered a jo in t venture wi th Toyota to reopen an o ld GM fac tory in Cal i forn ia , ca l led New Uni ted Motor Manufactur ing, Inc. , or NUMMI. The idea was that GM manag-ers could go to NUMMI to see up c lose what the "secre t" o f Toyota 's assembly sys tem was. Smi th a lso launched what he promoted as an ent i re ly new car company, Saturn , which was meant to p ioneer both a more coopera t ive re la-t ionship wi th UAW workers and a new way of se l l ing cars.

None of these was a bad idea. But GM took too long to learn the lessons f rom

automat ion s t ra tegy fe l l on i ts face be-cause the robots d idn ' t work proper ly , and the cars they bui l t s t ruck many consumers as b land ly s ty led and of poor qual i ty . NUMMI d id g ive GM man-agers va luable in format ion about Toyo-ta 's manufactur ing and management sys tem, which a team of MIT research-ers wou ld la ter ca l l " lean product ion ." But too many of the GM managers who gained knowledge f rom NUMMI were unable to make an impact on GM's core Nor th Amer ican bus iness .

Why? I be l ieve i t was because the UAW and GM middle managers qu i te under -s tandably focused on the fac t tha t Toy-ota 's p roduct ion sys tem requ i red only about ha l f the workers GM had at a typ ica l factory at the t ime. That was an equat ion the union wouldn ' t accept . The UAW demanded that GM keep paying workers d isp laced by new technology or o ther sh i f ts in product ion s t ra tegy, which led to the c reat ion o f what be-came known as the Jobs Bank. That program d iscouraged GM f rom c los ing factor ies and encouraged ef for ts to sus ta in h igh levels o f product ion even when demand fe l l .
