Western Day: Tuesday, September 17 At Noon Get out your cowboy boots, cowboy hat, bandana, etc. and come for lunch on this exciting Western Day! Be ready to share a memory of a fond rodeo experience or maybe you even participated in one! Also, feel free to share pictures of these exciting memories.
Grandparents Day Celebrated in the U.S. since 1978 President Jimmy Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day would be celebrated on the 1st Sunday after Labor Day. Marian McQuade a housewife from Fayette County, W. Virginia is considered the founder of National Grandparents Day. She hoped to persuade grandchildren to value wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.
I hope we get to stay under the Water Tower. Has anyone heard anything about the Water Tower? I know that there is a group that is trying to save it and I know we sure enjoy having it as part of the Senior Fitness Park. If you have anything to add, please let us know before next month’s newsletter.
Millstadt area gardeners know they reap what they sow. Many local gardeners decided to give extra vegetables and fruits from their gardens to the Millstadt Township Senior Services. The have been bringing fabulous looking green peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, baby squash, tomatoes and green beans. Everyone here has been so excited and also we had a few tomatoes out of our own garden. In balancing out the vegetables, Schnucks at Country Club Plaza in Belleville has been so generous in donating homemade breads and pastry items. We are so very grateful to our local gardeners and Schucks for providing these delicious donations. Don’t forget that Open Enrollment will be from October 15, 2013 to December 7, 2013. During this time you are allowed to switch your prescription drug plans if you are dissatisfied with your current plan. We will be offering appointments on Tuesdays if you would like to make an appointment. Have a great September! Come to the Center often to eat lunch and participate! It’s a great place to meet new friends and be in the know of local scuttlebutt.
Thanks to everyone who donated or bought items on the August 9, porch sale at the Senior Center. Denise Blaha, Marlou Eckert, Irma Hecke, Janet Mueller and Kathy Schaefer sorted and priced items and ensured the front porch of the Community Center was filled with priceless items. When the clock ticked down in the early afternoon over $300 was put in the bank for the Meals on Wheels program.
Porch Sale a Huge Success!

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.
Your Help in This Matter is Greatly Appreciated

Millstadt Ambulance Service The upgrade from a Basic Life Support (BLS) service to an Advanced Life Support (ALS) service has been the most significant change in recent years. Changes like this don’t happen overnight however. This has taken years of planning, applying for grants, reconsidering budgets and making applications to the state in addition to finding qualified personnel to add to our existing staff. The level of emergency medical care that can be offered by this ALS service is well worth this effort. Another change, the transition to 911 dispatching was a much longer journey and had to be made in stages. One of the most difficult concerns of the change was informing the public that 911 was the only number to call. Old habits die hard and there was a recording on the ‘old number’ that merely said: ‘If this is an emergency, dial 911’ instead of the more common: “This number has been disconnected”. Not until the calls to that number went to zero was it completely disconnected.

DID YOU KNOW?
MEAL PRICES The suggested donated cost of the noon meal served daily at the Millstadt Senior Center is $4.50 per meal. The average actual cost per meal is over $10.00. In addition to the amount paid to IGA or Aunt Maggies for each meal, we must cover the cost of serving containers, cups, napkins, transportation, beverages and salaries. Over 400 meals are served or delivered weekly to seniors in Millstadt Township. Without the support of the many volunteers and donations from the community the meal cost for each senior would be considerably higher than the $4.50 suggested donation. Thanks to all our volunteers and all those who donate or contribute items to the Senior Center!

Thank You You may have noticed how lovely the flowers at the Community Center have been this past summer as well as the flower pots on the patio. We would like to thank Marty Gibson and Judy Betz for their dedication and devotion to making our center a place of floral delight. They cut, pruned, weeded and watered throughout the summer and we want to express our appreciation for their hard work and commitment to their role in the beautification of our center. Thank you and your “green thumbs”!
MONTHLY PHILOSOPHY Positive thinking equals a positive day
A whimsical Quote Of The Day, By Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“What Lies Behind Us And What Lies Before Us Are Tiny Matters, Compared To What Lies Within Us.”
CAR ALARM TIP Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get into your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies! It will work no matter if you park your car in the driveway or the garage!

Garden Place - Resident Spotlight
We would like to recognize one of our wonderful residents, Ms. Georgine Sutter who joined Garden Place—Millstadt in 2009. Georgine was born at her parent’s farm in Sugar Loaf Township on Triple Lakes Road. Her family moved to Millstadt when she was a toddler and moved to St. Louis when she was around six years old. On February 14, 1941 Georgine married Clarence Sutter and they moved to a farm off Saeger Road in Millstadt. As Georgine would say, they were blessed with three sons and one daughter. Georgine was a stay at home mom, raising their children and caring for their home. She also served as secretary and President of the Millstadt PTA and helped organize the Band Parents Association. She was also an active member in Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for 17 years. She also belonged to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Ladies Aid, and was President of the LWML Metro South . Georgine and Clarence enjoyed traveling and have visited all 50 states. Forty nine of those states they visited by driving to them. Most weekends Gerogine and Clarence enjoyed dancing and had ten or twelve couples they regularly danced with. Their children have blessed them with an additional 13 grandchildren & 10 great-grandchildren. In 2011 Georgine and Clarence celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Sadly, shortly after their 70th anniversary Clarence passed away. Georgine is an avid reader and especially enjoys Karen Kingsbury and other Christian authors. In addition, to reading Georgine enjoys playing games and cards. Her favorite card game is pinochle. Georgine participates in almost all Garden Place activities and especially likes the exercise program and trivia. We are so happy to have Georgine living with us here at Garden Place - Millstadt and even more happy that she is still enjoying her life with us. “The staff at Garden Place are so helpful and we are all just family” - Georgine Sutter Garden Place welcomes our Newest Family members!!

Pause For A Moment To lose your wealth is much. To lose your health is more. To lose your soul is such a loss, That nothing can restore. The world is such a busy place There’s so much hurry in it. Isn’t it nice sometimes To pause for just a minute.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
