Day 1 (February 23, 2014): San Antonio Forest and Andean Cock-of-the-rock Lek ThefirstdayofbirdingintheSanAntonioCloudForestintheWesternAndeswasquiteaday.The
firstbirdofthetripwasGolden-headedQuetzal,seenbytheentiregroupasweexitedthevan.Weall
agreedthatthiswasapremonitionofanexcellentfewweeksofbirdingtocome.ShortlyaftertheQuetzalwe
hadniceviewsofSaffron-crownedTanager,Streak-cappedTreehunter,Chestnut-cappedBrush-finchand
thenamagicalmoment.WeheardtheendemicChestnutWood-quailveryclosetous,andhadtheshowof
alifetimeasthebirdflewacrosstheroadandlandedinfrontofus,allowingustoobserveitwithunobstruct-
edviewsformorethanaminute.Definitelyaspecialtreatforusasthisisadifficultbird.Aftertheshow,
weproceededalongtheroadthroughtheSanAntonioForestandsawMulticoloredTanager,Bright-rumped
Attila,Golden-crownedFlycatcherandOrange-breastedChlorophonia.Mostofthegroupwasabletohave
decentviewsoftheskulkerNariñoTapaculo,andthenweallenjoyedGreen-and-blackFruiteaterandUni-

JaimeCertuchegaveusawarmwelcomeat
hisproperty,andaftermeetingwithsomelocalfolks
thathadjustcomefromthelekweembarkedonthe
shorthikedownthehill.Alas,weenjoyedanhourat
thelekwhere5individualsgaveusashowandthe
photographersinthegrouphadaheyday.Wehad
“ojaldras”(frieddough)withJaimeandhiswifeand
thenreturnedtoourquainthotelinCaliforlist-mak-
ing,Chinesefoodandsomerest.
Day 2 (February 24, 2014): El 18 and Dolmetsch Arboretum
Ourseconddayofbirdingwasintheinfamous
Km18,wherewespentourfirsthouratthefeed-
ersatFincaAlejandria.WemetRaulandElsa,the
veryenthusiasticownersoftheproperty.Aparadise
forhummingbirdsandtanagers,ourhummerlist
grewveryquicklyasweaddedAndeanEmerald,
Steely-ventedHummingbird,Buff-tailedCoronet,
theincredibleLong-tailedSylph,BrownVioletear,
White-neckedJacobin,BronzyInca,Purple-throated
Woodstar,SpeckledHummingbirdandBlue-headed
Saphiretoourgrowinglist.Astotanagers,wehad
incredibleviewsandexcellentphotoopportunities
ofGolden-naped,Golden,Scrub,Saffron-crowned,
Blue-capped,Flame-rumped,Blue-grey,Palmand
SummerTanagers.Othernotablespeciesthatvisited
thefeedersduringthemorningincludedRed-headed
andBlack-billedandGlossy-blackThrushes.

numberofspecies,wepeeledthegroupoffthe
feedersandhittheroad,withnicespeciessuchas

feedersandthenheadedtotheDolmetschArbore-
tumforaprivatetourbycreatorandDirectorAlvaro
Calonje.Thecollectionofover1,000speciesof
plantsfromaroundtheworldimpressedthosewith
aneyeforbotany,andwedidaddafewmorebirds
toourgrowinglist:Black-throatedMango,Blue-
neckedTanagerandGreen-crownedWoodnymph.
TheafternoonwasspentcrossingtheCaucaValley
tothecityofBuga,wherewehadsomedowntime
tocheckoutthemiracle-makingchurchandenjoy
thehumongouspoolbeforedinner.Notbadforaday
with98species!
Day 3 (February 25, 2014): Sonso Lagoon
Excitementwasintheairduringournicebuf-
fetbreakfast,astheentiregrouphadbeenanticipat-
ingsomewetlandbirding.TheSonsoLagoonisone
oftheCaucaValley’slastremainingwetlands,as
mostofthevalleyhasbeenconvertedtoamono-
cultureofsugarcane.Itisteemingwithbirds,sowe
sureenjoyedbirdingtheriparianareasandwetlands
thereservehastooffer.Thedaystartedoffwith
manyaquaticbirdsalongthemainroad,including:
Fulvous,Black-bellied,andWhite-facedWhistling-
ducks;PurpleGallinule,WattledJacana,Limpkin,
Blue-great,Cocoi,Little-blueandStriatedHerons;
Snowy,GreatandCattleEgrets;andSnailKitewas
observedhuntingforsnailsandeatingarodent.A
definitehighlightofthemorningwastherareComb
Duck.Weobserved1maleindividualasuperbirdto
addtoournicetriplist.Thefirst40minutesofbirding
werejustfabulous.
Weparkedatthereserveandimmediately
hadnicebirds,includingLesserNighthawkand
CommonPotoo,nocturnalbirdsthatwecaught
sleepingandprovidedmagnificentphotoopportuni-

ties.Themorningcontinuedtogetbetterandbetter,
withCrimson-crested,Red-crownedandLineated
Woodpeckersmakinganappearance.Wethen
headedtoanearbyviewingplatformandwesaw
greatbirds,includingtheuncommonJetAntbird,
Slate-headedTody-flycatcher,andextremelynice
viewsofthelovableSpectacledParrolet.Itwashard
toleavetheplatformasmoreandmorespecies
cametous:Pale-breastedSpinetail,GreaterAni,
Yellow-oliveFlycatcher,YellowOriole,andthevery
tinyandtheendemicGreyishPiculet.Then,another
treat,theendemicApicalFlycatchershowedupjust
beforeweleftthetower.
Aswewalkedtoanopenarea,wefinallyhad
impressiveviewsofStripedCuckoosingingand
raisingitscrestjustafewmetersaway.ThenBlue-
blackGrassquitandPiedWater-tyrantshowedup
asabonus.Onourwaybacktothebuswetried
successfullyfortheveryvocalGreatAntshrike,with
greatviewshadbyall.Wereturnedtoourhotelfor
showersandadelicious“sancocho”,averyColom-
biansoupmadewithchicken,plantains,yucca,and
aspecialblendofspices.Theafternoonwasspent
travelingtoMontezuma,whichinvolvedcoveringthe
restoftheCaucaValleyanddescendingthrougha
coffeegrowinglandscapeinthewesternAndesand
somepleasanttownsalongtheway.
Day 4 (February 26, 2014) Montezuma ThiswasaveryspecialdayforChocospecial-
ties,veryearlyinthemorningwebeganourascent
uptheinfamousMontezumaroad,intheTatama
NationalPark.Ourfirstspecialtyofthedaywasthe
endemicGold-ringedTanager,andthenearendem-
icsGlistening-greenTanagerandBlack-chinned
Mountain-tanagerwereanaddedbonus.Maleand
FemaleGolden-collaredHoneycreepermadeanap-
pearance,whataslightlybird!Thelistkeptgrowing
andgrowingasweaddedBrownInca,theattractive
Chestnut-breastedChlorophonia,Orange-breasted
Spectacled Parrotlet by Elston Hill
Fruiteater,OrnateFlycatcher,Dusky-bushTanager,
andPurplish-mantledTanager.Thehighlightofthe
daywasmostdefinitelyOchre-breastedAntpitta,
seenperchedveryclosetousandincrediblycooper-
ativeastheentiregrouphadniceviews.Black-and-
goldTanager,anotherspecialendemictheshowed
up,allofusagreeingithadbeenastupendous
morning.Ourlunchwasdeliveredviahorseback,and
ourhungrycrewwasexcitedtoseelunchmadeit
safelyupthehill.Theafternoonyieldedothergreat
birdssuchasBlackSolitaire,OliveFinch,Tricolored
Brush-finch,andOlivaceusPiha.
Thefogbegantodescendbutthisdidnot
stopus.WalkingdowntothelodgewesawBatFal-
con,River-bankWarbler,White-cappedDipperand
aroundthelodgeatthefeederswehadsomeother
delights.Velvet-purpleCoronet,EmpressBrilliant,
andWhite-tailedHillstarwereourfavoritehummers.
ArrivingatthebananafeederswereBuff-throated
andBlack-wingedSaltator,Silver-throatedTanager,
andfeedinginthewetareassurroundingthelodge
wehadveryniceviewsoftheuncommonBlackish
Rail.
Day 6 (February 27, 2014): Montezuma Ourmissiontodaywastoreachthetopofthe
hill,whereamilitarybasesitsas2,200metersand
someveryspecialbirdscanbefound.Wecouldnot
helpbuttotakeintheamazingviewsbeforebegin-
ningoursearchforChestnut-belliedFlowerpiercer.
Beforetheflowerpiercerappeared,Munchique
Wood-wren,arecentlydescribedendemic,posed
forusforafewminutes,justaskingtobelookedat.
ThenastupendousviewofGrass-greenTanager.It
tookusaboutahalfhourforthewholegrouptohave
viewsoftheflowerpiercer,butonceeverybodysawit
thebirdbegantoappearregularlyandweallenjoyed
itimmensely.Othernotablespeciesnearthetopof
thehillincludedRufousSpinetail,thebeautifulHood-
edMountain-tanager,andTyrianMetaltail.Cloud
ForestPygmy-owlwasheardconstantlyduringour
descentbutwasnotvisibledespiteourefforts.
Thegroupenjoyedtheastoundingamountof
botanicaldiversitywhenthebirdingsloweddown,
Chestnut-bellied FLowerpiercer
especiallytheorchids.Lunchwasdeliveredbyhorse
andlunchwasenjoyedinourtrustyjeepsasitbe-
gantodrizzle.Wedecidedtotryourluckabitlower
asthefogbecamedense,whichprovedtobean
excellentchoice.Astheactivitybegantopickup,
weheardBarredFruiteaterandTanagerFinchand
addedthesetwospecialtiestothelist.Mostimpres-
sivewastheshowthatwentonwithtwoTanager
Finchindividualsforabouttenminutes.Theaf-
ternoonwasproductivedespitethefog,yielding
Black-throatedTody-flycatcher,Black-chestedJay,
Chestnut-headedandRusset-backedOropendolas.
WetriedatParker’sAntbirdandPlain-backedAnt-
pittatonoavail,butitwasfunwatchingRiverbank
Warbleralongtheroadbeforereturningtothelodge
fordinnerandlist-making.
Day 7 (February 28, 2014): Montezuma – Otun-Quimbaya

missingonourlist.Birdingatthefeederswesaw

Woodstarandothers.OntheroadwesawTropical
PeweeandthespectacularGreen-frontedLance-
bill,andworkedhardtogetviewsofWhite-breasted
Wood-wrenandParker’sAntbird.Weallenjoyed
close-upviewsofanadultBatFalconteachinga
juveniletohuntcicadas.Onthewaytotheriverwe
sawthegorgeousPurplish-mantledTanager,aswell
asBayWren,River-bankWarbler,andChestnutand
Russet-backedOropendolas.Wehadniceluckwith
mixedflocks,inwhichwesawMetallic-greenTana-
ger,Blue-neckedTanager,Golden-wingedManakin,
Yellow-throatedBush-tanager,andCanadaWarbler.
Wearrivedtothelodgebeforelunchintimefora
refreshingvisittoanearbywaterfallbeforepacking
upandheadingtowardsOtun-Quimbaya.
OnthewaytoPereirawehadashortstopin
thequainttownofApia,toenjoyanicecupofcoffee
andpeople-watchingonthemainsquare.Wemeet
JulianZuleta,alocalleaderwhorunsthebirding
club,aswehadsomedonationsforhisgroupas
theirofficerecentlyburntdownandtheylostev-
erything.HewasverythankfultoRalphandKatie
Gutierrez,PattyKamsyz,TerranceBonaceandthe
AmericanBirdingAssociationBirder’sExchange
programfordonatingequipmenttothegroup.We
arrivedinPereriaandbeganourascentalongthe
OtunRiver,everybodywitheyesontheriverforTor-
renDuck.AbouthalfwayupthehillJosespotteda
maleonarockinthemiddleoftheriver,whichweall

Day 8 (March 1, 2014): Otun-Quimbaya Wehadanearlybreakfastandbeganbirding
inthevicinityofthelodge,whichhadusthrilledas
wehadgreatviewsofRed-ruffedFruitcrow,Green
Jay,Yellow-belliedSiskinandmanyofthecommon
tanagers.Ourearlymorningwalktotheriveryielded
manynewspeciessuchasPale-napedBrush-finch,
Pale-edgedFlycatcherandGreenHermit.Wespent
sometimeonthebridgenearthefishhatchery
whichgaveustheopportunitytoseeTorrentTyran-
nuletandWhite-cappedDipper.Wecontinuedto
addspeciestoourlist,withLouisianaWaterthrush,
StreakedSaltator,Band-tailedPigeon,andoneof
thebestshowsofthetrip.Aflockoftheuncommon
Golden-plumedParakeetarrivedandkeptongetting
closerandclosertous,feedingawayatthefruitsof
thebalsamtreeaswefeastedoureyesonthisspe-
cialoccasion.Content,wereturnedtothelodgefor
lunch,whichconsistedoffreshtroutforthenearby
hatchery.
Theafternoonbroughtsomenicesurprises
andsuperbbirding.ViewsoftheCaucaGuanwere
nice,anditwasfuntogetacquaintedwiththisen-
demicspeciesthatwasoncethoughttobeextinct.
Theroadthroughtheforestyieldedtheendemic
CrestedAnt-tanager,Speckle-facedParrot,thegor-
geousandendemicMulticoloredTanager,Montane-
foliageGleaner,SlatySpinetail,andweheardthe
uncommonMustachedAntpittaandwesawthenear
endemicRufous-breastedFlycatcher.Inretrospect,
itwasoneofthebestbirdingdayswehavehadin
Otun-Quimbaya.
Day 9 (March 2, 2014): Otun-Quimbaya – Rio Blanco ThisonewasourlastdayinOtunQuimbaya
andourfirstdayintheRioBlancoReserve.After
breakfastwedrovetotheendoftheroadandstarted
hikingtowardsthelodge.Thefirstbirdsoftheday
wereSickle-wingedGuan,Chapman’sSwiftand
Grey-rumpedSwift,thenwehadamazingviews
ofSpottedBarbtail.Afterthatabigwoodcreeper
wasabouttheareaandthisonewasStrong-billed
Woodcreeper.InsidetheforestweheardChestnut-
crownedAntpitta,andhadsomeniceviewsofthis
Red-ruffed Fruitcrow by Elston Hill
The endemic Cauca Guan by Elston Hill
forestskulker.Streak-neckedFruit-Tyrantappeared
nearby,andbirdingdowntheroadwegotamixed
flockwithThree-striped,Russet-crowned,Canada
andBlackburnianWarblersaswellasAsh-throat-
edBush-tanagerandSlatyAntwren.Afestivalof
tanagersshowedinfrontofus,withMetallic-green,
Beryl-spangled,Golden,andthemajesticMulticol-
oredTanager.Ifthatwasnotenough,theflockalso
broughtSpeckledHummingbirdandOrange-bellied
Euphonia,andatthelodgewesawLesserGold-
finch,RustyFlowerpiercer,andHepaticTanager.
WehadanearlylunchandheadedtoManiza-
les,whereweclimbedongondolas,aformofpublic
transportationthataffordedgreatviewsofthecity.A
walkthroughdowntownwasverypleasant,andwe
hadachancetotry“Chontaduro”apalmfruitthat
iseatenwithhoneyandsalt.Wealsotriedanother
streetvendordelicacy,“dedosdequeso”,frieddough
stuffedwithcheeseandguava.AfterenjoyingBolivar
Plaza,wecrossedManizalesandbeganourascent
uptoRioBlanco.
Wearrivedatthelodgeintimetodosome
birding,andinamatterofminuteshadseenTourma-
lineSunangel,Long-tailedSylph,Buff-tailedCoronet,
CollaredInca,Fawn-breastedBrilliantandTawny-
belliedHermitatthefeeders.Otherbirdsthathang
nearthelodgeandappearedincludedWhite-sided
andMaskedFlowerPiercers,Blue-wingedMountain-
tanager,Blue-cappedTanager,andGreatThrush.
Atduskwewalkeddowntheroadfromthelodge
andhadviewsofBand-wingedNightjarinflightand
Rufous-belliedNighthawkperchedveryclosefrom
us.WeheardWhite-throatedScreech-owlandwait-
edpatientlybutthebirdnevercametous.

Day 10 (March 3, 2014): Rio Blanco Arainymorningdidnotslowusdownaswe
headedtotheAntpittafeedersnearthelodge.As
wesettledinatthefirstfeeder,Chestnut-crowned
Antpittagaveusawarmwelcome.Immediately
thereafter,theshowbeganwiththeappearanceof
theendemicBrown-bandedAntpitta,andweenjoyed
boththesebirdsfor20minutesofnon-stopentertain-
mentandphotography.Content,wemadeourway
tothenextfeederwithashortstoptoseeBlackish
Tapaculo.Thenextfeedertooksomepatiencebut
eventuallywehadterrificviewsofthetinySlate-
crownedAntpitta.Thelastfeederatthedaydidnot
yieldtheendemicBicoloredAntpitta,butnearbywe
sawtheboldChestnut-napedAntpitta.Itrainedinter-
mittentlyduringtherestofthemorningbutwewere
stillabletoaddAsh-throatedTapaculo,Superciliaried
HemispingusandLachrymoseMountain-tanagerto
ourlist.
Afterlunchwetookasmallbreakandaftera
shortperiodofsunshineitbegantorainagain.
Theafternoonwassimilartothemorning,abitslow
duetotherainbutwesawnicebirdssuchasGold-
en-plumedParakeetandWhite-cappedTanager.
ThenwewentdowntheroadlookingforLyre-tailed
NightjarandSwallow-tailedNightjar.Aswearrived,
Lyre-tailedNightjarappearedontheroadandwe
hadniceviewsofthisbird.
Day 11 (March 4, 2014): Rio Blanco Oureleventhdayofthetripbroughtnicer
weatherandbetterbirdingopportunities,withthe
morningyieldingPowerfulWoodpecker,Crimson-
mantledWoodpecker,Black-collaredJay,anda
mixedflockwithPearledTreerunner,Black-capped
andSuperciliaredHemispingus,Grey-hoodedBush-
tanagerandSharp’sWren.Afterlunchwesaidour
goodbye’stothestaffatthelodgeandbirdeddown
theroad,whenthebirdofthedayappeared,Red-
hoodedTanager.Othergoodiesofourlastafternoon
includedSlaty-backedChat-tyrant,AcadianFlycatch-
er,Rufous-browedPeppershrike,andSmoky-brown
Woodpecker.Atthefeedersatthegateweadded
somenicehummingbirdstoourlist:White-bellied
Woodstar,andGreenandSparklingVioletears.After
anicedayofbirdingwedrovetoourhotelinthe
outskirtsofManizalesandverymuchenjoyedthehot
Brown-banded Antpitta by Elston Hill

springs.
Day 12 (March 5, 2014): Los Nevados National Park Excitementwasintheairasweprepared
toascendtotheNevadodelRuiz,onwhatturned
outtobeoneofourfinestbirdingdays.Aconstant
drizzleduringourdriveupdidnotstopusfrom
gettingsomenicebirds,includeParamoandPlain-
coloredSeedeaters,SedgeWren,PlumbeusSier-
ra-finch,Stout-billedCinclodesandRuddyDuck.
Aswecontinuedourascenttherainstoppedand
cloudscleared,reachingtheparkentrancewitha
verywarmwelcomebyavocalizingTawnyAntpitta.
Afewminutesandwehadridiculouslyniceviewsof
BeardedHelmetcrestperchedona“frailejon”(Es-
pletia).ThenweenjoyedaWhite-chinnedThistletail
gatheringnestingmaterialfromthesameplant.
Thegroupenjoyedthesceneryandwede-
scendedtoourlunchspot,whereweallsawShin-
ningSunbeamandBlack-chestedBuzzrd-eagleas
weenjoyedourpicnic.Afterlunchtheactivitywas
great,startingwithclose-upviewsofthreeAndean
Siskin,thenBlackFlowerpiercerandViridianMetal-
tail.Wespentsometimeonaledgeoverlookingelfin
forest,andsawsomeexcellentspecialtiesback-
to-back:Black-thighedPuffleg,GreatSaphirewing,
Black-backedBush-tanager,andParamoTapaculo.
ThenBrown-backedChat-tyrantbeforespectacular
viewsofRed-crestedCotinga.Anepicwaytoend
thedaywashavingthepleasureofenjoyingincred-
ibleviewsofScarlet-belliedMountain-tanagerfor
severalminutes.Afteralongdayofbirdingweall
enjoyedsometimeinthehotspringsandaverynice
mealreminiscingonaperfectday.

Day 13 (March 6, 2014): Manizales-Cali Drive AbitofalaterstarthadusonourwaytoCali
by8a.m,aswehadsomestopsplannedduringthe
drive.OurfirststopnearasmalllakebyChinchina
yieldedLeastGrebeandRuddy-breastedSeed-
eater.Notmuchelsewasgoingonsowecontinued
towardsCali,stoppingatareststopwithniceviews
ofPereiraandsomegoodcoffeeandsouvenirs.We
descendedthecentralAndestotheCaucaValley
andmadeashortstopnearSonsoLagoonforTerry
togetatasteofthebirdinghehadmissedduring
thefirstdaysofthetrip.
Pattyspottedanotheradditiontothelist,
Fork-tailedFlycatcherwhichwasenjoyedbyall.
MoreviewsofCombDuckandotheraquaticbirds
includingLittleBlueHeronandBlack-belliedWhis-
tlingDuckweregreatlyappreciatedbyTerry.Our

andTropicalMockingbird,andSpectacedParrot-

thelist.
ThenightwasspenttouringtheSanAntonio
musicandobservingsomeAndeandancingbefore
enjoyingsomedelectablepizzaanddrinkswith
viewsofElPeñonpark.Wesaidourgoodbye’sand
reminiscedonthefabuloustripbeforereturningto
