(AP) Caterpillar Inc. said June 17 that it plans to invest almost $700 mil- lion over the next four years to start producing mining shovels and expand production of its trucks at plants in Illinois and India. The world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment said it plans to add a new mining shovel production line at its Aurora, Ill., plant and expand truck production in Decatur, Ill., and Chennai, India. The new mining shovels will range from 125- to 800-ton (113 to 725 t) models. The 125- ton shovels are expected to be available in 2011 with larger models following in 2013 and 2014. The Aurora plant is likely to gain about 300 jobs through 2014. Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan said jobs will be added at the other plants as demand increases, but the Peoria com- pany doesn’t know how many. Caterpillar said these expansions should increase the truck production capacity of the Decatur plant by about 30 percent. That plant produces Caterpillar’s largest mining trucks, including its 400-ton (363 t) model. The truck capacity of the Indian plant will double to help Caterpillar meet increasing demand in commodity-rich developing regions like Asia. “This investment of nearly $700 million demonstrates our commitment to Caterpillar mining customers around the world,” said Doug Oberhelman, who will become Caterpillar’s CEO in July. “It also is a great example of the job-creation benefits of global trade.” Oberhelman said more than 60 percent of the large mining equipment made at Caterpillar’s Illinois facilities are sold outside the United States. Caterpillar has said it’s seeing stronger demand for its iconic yellow-and-black machinery because the economy has begun to recover from the recession. Before Blast Off, Groundwork Done for N.M. Spaceportnitaries including New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson placedscoops of earth turned up by a grader into a container carriedin the nose cone of the rocket, which the governor thenlaunched.

A great deal of excitement has been generated by thespaceport, which will significantly boost the local economy.A New Mexico State University study predicts that fiveyears after the facility opens it will employ more than 2,000on spaceport and spaceport related jobs, while a secondstudy by the Futron Corporation estimates that by 2020 thenumber of employees in such jobs will be more than 4,000.In addition, the spaceport is expected to increase areaemployment opportunities in such disciplines as technologyand science, as well as related fields, for example renewableenergy research.

In this regard, the facility has been designed to meetLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)Gold Certification standards, awarded to construction proj-ects meeting “green” performance goals in such areas asconservation of water and energy and reduced waste materi-al. To this end, the spaceport incorporates such features as so-called earth tubes (a type of cooling device), solar panels togenerate electricity, and natural ventilation.

Founded in 1994, CMC Construction, based in Truth orConsequences, has carried out many erosion control, earth-work, and site work projects for private developers andnumerous federal, state, county, and municipal agenciesthroughout its home state, Arizona, and Texas as well as for-eign countries.

“We are building the Internal Roads Project SP-008 as ageneral contractor and are backfilling the high power electricand the communication lines as a subcontractor to McDade-Woodcock, Inc., electrical contractors out of Albuquerque.Their general superintendent is Andrew Pedroncelli, whohas over 20 years’heavy electrical experience,” Bill Loomis,CMC construction manager, said in March.

“On the road project, we are performing GPS and TotalStation Trimble Stakeless earthwork headed up by CMC’sHank George [aka AZ Grademaker], grading for one majorstructure — a six barrel concrete box culvert, each barrelbeing 10 feet x 14 feet x 40 feet through length. There are 13single and battery locations of corrugated metal pipe cul-verts. Guardrail, minor curb, ramps, curb and gutter, andsidewalk are also included. Base course and HMAC pavingwill be major items on the project and will be finished offwith signage and striping.”

In addition, CMC has offered LEEDS substitution on soilstabilization to help achieve a higher LEEDS certification.

“La Calerita Construction LLC, based in Las Cruces,N.M., and owned by Toby Villalobos, is the subcontractor onthe concrete box culvert. He is well on the way to finishingthe structure in approximately 90 days as a milestone, notcounting lost weather days,” said Loomis. “The terminal andhangar facility is starting up and Summit Construction Inc.,of Albuquerque and Phoenix has the contract. The fire facil-ity is going to be started shortly by Bateman-Hall Inc., ofIdaho Falls, Idaho, and while no projects have been com-pleted, most of the ongoing horizontal ones are more than 40percent complete.”

CMC has 43 employees on site. Work began in December2009 and is on schedule for a completion date of December2010, despite some difficulties relating to archaeologicalsites, existing power poles, old ranch water lines, right ofway issues, and unusually wet and snowy winter weather.

CMC’s equipment working on site so far includes three“blades” (two Caterpillar 140G and a John Deere 772graders), two bulldozers (a Caterpillar D8N and KomatsuD65E) two loaders (Caterpillar 928 and John Deere 644) andtwo trackhoes (Caterpillar 330B and 315C).

In addition, the company is fielding eight dump trucks(tandems, bellies, and trailers) and water trucks and trailersfed from a Kline water tower and pond, as well as a heavyduty disc harrow, fitted with four rows of 40 in. (101.6 cm)discs, pulled by a monster-tired John Deere turbo diesel trac-tor, and two sheepsfoot and two vibratory rollers (Caterpillarand Bomag). A Case 580 grading tractor with Gannon grad-ing box was used for fine grading in tight areas, such as nextto buildings or structures or in areas where there is no roomto turn around. Support equipment and trucks, and variousother small hand and walk-behind pieces also are being uti-lized. The company’s contract has a value of about $2.5 mil-lion, while total let to contract so far for the spaceport is morethan $90 million.

Spaceport America’s 10,000 ft. (3,048 m) long, 200 ft. (70m) wide concrete runway is now well on the way to com-pletion, two months ahead of schedule, with completionexpected in June.

David Montoya Construction Inc., based in Alameda,N.M., is the contractor and also will construct the apron.Established in 1985, the company provides a wide range ofexperience in all areas of highway and heavy construction aswell as concrete work.

Leica Geosystems supplied GPS and robotic total stationmachine control for Montoya’s equipment, which includedGPS-equipped dozers and motorgraders and a GOMACO9500 Series fine-grade trimmer equipped with LeicaPaveSmart 3D system. The latter gets subgrade to ± 1/100thft. and can deliver significant improvements in concreteyields for the paving phase compared with traditional tech-niques.

Currently Montoya is running its Guntert ZimmermanS850 slipform paver. To cover the width of the runway itmakes six passes, each 33.3 ft. (10.1 m) wide. The paver iscontrolled by Leica’s PaveSmart 3D (LMGS-S) system, which regulates steer, grade, draft and crossfall in real-time.

With vertical launch facilities already existing, the runwaywill handle horizontal launches as well as flights in trainingand other space-related vehicles.

Space tourists will be carried aloft by Virgin Galactic, sis-

ter company of British airline Virgin Atlantic and main ten-ant for the spaceport. Interest in the venture is such thatVirgin Galactic has reportedly already taken in reservationdeposits amounting to an estimated $45 million. Currentlymore than 300 people have indicated interest in taking aspace flight with the company. Gerald Martin ConstructionManagement of Albuquerque, N.M., is the owner’s repre-sentative for the project, bringing to the project its expertisein all areas of construction and with its partner, HDRAviation, experience in aviation facilities including workwith NASA.

Contractors currently at work on the job include FNFNew Mexico LLC, also located in Albuquerque. The com-pany is working on the initial site enabling and security aswell as the fuel storage facility. They also are providingaggregates to some of the contractors on site.

Water facilities are being built by Smithco ConstructionInc., Caballo, N.M., a family-owned business established in1969 and specializing in water-related jobs. Its clients haveincluded a number of New Mexico municipalities as well asfederal and state governments.

AUI, Inc., based in Albuquerque, N.M., is handling thewastewater part of the project. Founded in 1981, the con-tractor specializes in heavy civil work of various kinds, including storm drains, water and sewer pipelines, treatmentplants, and pump stations.

The rocket plane Virgin Galactic will use for spacetourism took its first flight from Mojave, Calif., on March22, 2010, piggy-backed on a twin fuselaged plane and reach-ing an altitude of 50,000 ft. Virgin Galactic has announcedthat on the next test flight SpaceShipTwo will be releasedand will glide down and land at the same California facility.

CMC Construction’s Bill Loomis summed up the space-port project by observing “They have finally figured outwhere the best place to launch is for the future. The largestcontrolled airspace and landmass on the planet from zero to250 miles high, a mile-high to start — meaning huge fuelsavings and increased payload capacity, minimal encroach-ment possibility, low population density, no salt sea blast, and no hurricanes all make it the ideal location. It is going tobe the eighth Man Made Wonder of the World.”

LLeeaaddiinngg EEddggee AAttttaacchhmmeennttss IInncc..Leading Edge Attachments Inc. now offers the “STAG”

bucket, which is a new style, high penetration bucket utiliz-ing the “staggered tooth” technology, and is designed forexcavators allowing the operator to easily dig compacted

soils, coral, shale, caliche, strati-fied materials, shot rock orfrozen ground with higher con-centrated breakout force for aprice that is lower than the com-pany’s Multi-Ripper bucket.

The STAG bucket designallows the operator to focus theexcavator’s full breakout forceon one tooth at a time because thefront leading edge is angled.Creating flat trench bottoms iseasy with this bucket alsobecause the teeth are on the sameplane, similar to a conventionalbucket, according to the manu-facturer.

Conventional buckets have theteeth mounted on an edge that so

that all of the teeth engage the material at the same time thussharing the load and decreasing the tooth breakout force. TheLEA STAG bucket creates high penetration due to the factthat one tooth is engaging at a time. The operator angles thebucket in tough digging conditions allowing the forces to betransmitted to fewer teeth, thus saving energy and increasingperformance, while still being able to shave the bottom of atrench flat similar to a conventional bucket.

The STAG bucket is manufactured in the USA using T1alloy steel and the powerful MTG KingMet teeth, and isavailable to fit on any excavator from 22,000 to 200,000 lbs.(9,979 to 90,718 kg).

The Multi-Ripper Teeth also are available for some mod-els, to provide even more penetration.

AAIIMM AAttttaacchhmmeennttssAIM Attachments now offers a complete line of heavy

duty loader grapple buckets for wheel loaders of all sizes. Grapple buckets feature durable construction with an

AR400 steel cutting edge with reinforced corners and gus-sets. The GPL bucket designalso features an abrasionresistant bottom with thickwear straps. The hydraulicclamps feature a bolt-onmiddle design thatallows the clamps to beused in dual and single con-figurations.

The AIM GPL bucket is readyfor stockpiling, bank loading, as well asexcavation tasks. The sloped bottom designprovides maximum dump clearance and maintains thebreakout forces of the machine.

RRoocckkllaannddRockland’s Entek Krypto Klaw is an ideal tool for demo-

lition and land-clearing applications where precision andmaximum clamping force are required. The Krypto Klawdesign brings the bucket and thumb together as one collec-tive working unit resulting in maximum opera-tor efficiency and full use of the exca-vator’s reach throughout 100 per-cent of the curl cycle. TheEntek Krypto Klaw isdesigned to work with allsizes of excavators frommini-excavators to the larg-er machines, according tothe manufacturer.

The Entek Krypto Klawperforms like a grapple whileretaining the advantages of anexcavator bucket. Once the load is clamped, operators usecurl control to position the load. Its multi-rib, open designallows for maximum operator visibility while manipulatingmaterial. The Krypto Klaw mates directly with the stick, sav-ing time and money during the installation process. Pin orcouple the Krypto Klaw to the excavator, plug in twohydraulic lines and go to work, no welding or additional mis-cellaneous parts required, the manufacturer said.

The Entek Krypto Klaw is manufactured from long-wear-ing, high strength, quenched and tempered steel, and rein-forced with AR400 in all critical wear areas, to include thecutting edge, doubler plates and bottom-side wear plates. Itis covered by Rockland’s one-year, 2,000 hour warranty.

Rockland Manufacturing has designed and manufacturedspecialty and standard attachments for loaders, dozers, exca-vators, graders and skid steers for more than 60 years.Rockland’s custom and specialty products are engineered tofit the customer’s specific application. Standard attachmentsare designed to fit all makes of equipment. The company’s130 standard products include buckets, thumbs, blades, rakesand forks.

TTeerreexx AASSVVWhen material

needs to be moved,general-purposedirt buckets are themost common andversatile attach-ment available forall Terex ASVcompact trackloaders. They are the most common and versatile attachmentavailable for digging, carrying and loading dirt and othermaterials.

These general-purpose buckets connect quickly and easi-ly to the loader’s quick attach interface — standard on allTerex ASV compact track loaders. Constructed to handlemultiple applications, Terex ASV buckets are reinforced atall cutting edges to handle the rigors of any job. The frontcutting edge features a reversible bolt-on hardened steel edgeand also can accommodate a bolt-on tooth bar.

BBlluuee DDiiaammoonnddThe Blue Diamond stump bucket is made from .5 in. (1.3

cm) steel that is double layer at the tip and uses a 1 by 8 in.(2.5 by 20 cm) cutting edge. This bucket measures 56 in.(142 cm) from mount to the tip of the cast replaceable teeth. The narrow profile allows for deep penetration into hardsoils and the curved bottom allows the bucket to do the pry-ing action instead of relying on the breakout force of themachine.

CCEEAAttttaacchhmmeennttss IInncc..CEAttachments Inc., a global supplier of attachments for

compact equipment, added three Edge high dump buckets toits lineup of specialty bucket attachments.

Ideal for loading feed mixers and trucks used in agricul-tural and construction applications, the Edge high dumpbuckets pivot the bucket for dumping, increasing vertical liftby approximately 44 in. (118 cm) and horizontal reach byapproximately 13 in. (33cm), according to the man-ufacturer.

Features of these spe-cialty buckets include twoheavy-duty hydrauliccylinders that pivot thebucket 86 degrees and asee-through spill guardallows for greater visibility. The buckets also feature a.75 by 6 in. (1.9 by 15 cm)edge with holes to acceptan optional bolt-on cuttingedge.

Three Edge high dumpbuckets are offered, includ-ing 72, 84 and 96 in. (183, 213 and 244 cm) models with aheaped capacity of up to 43.9 cu. ft. (1.2 cu m) depending onthe model. All three buckets are 29.8 in. (75.6 cm) high and47.3 in. (120 cm) deep. Units come complete with hoses andflat face couplers, and an optional bolt-on cutting edge isavailable.

The Edge high dump buckets are recommended for load-ers with operating capacities greater than 1,800 lbs. (816 kg).

CCoommeett BBrreeaakkeerrComet Breaker recently made their debut in the U.S. mar-

ket with a line-up of hydraulic hammers, crushers andshears. The Korean-based manufacturer has tested theirnewly launched products extensively and knows a thing ortwo about breaking and crushing rock since Korea’s topog-raphy consists of approximately 70 percent rock. The CometBreaker line of hammers was engineered based on the needsof the U.S. market and was tested side-by-side with virtual-ly every other hammer sold in the United States.

According to the manufacturer, the Comet Breaker ham-mer is more powerful, has more standard features and has asubstantially lower price tag than that of their competitors. On all models of the hammer, the main body incorporatesurethane inserts to reduce vibration, as well as silent tech-nology with an internal muffler for further noise reduction.

Another standard feature for all hammersis the application of heat-treated dusthomechisels, which optimize heat disbursement. The combination of the dusthome chiseland the urethane inserts in the main bodymeans less wear and tear on machinebooms and arms and longer life for theequipment.

Comet Breaker offers 13 models of ham-mers with impact energy ratings of 350 to18,000 ft.-lbs. and chisel diameters of 45 to200 mm.

The same innovative design and engineer-ing that goes into the production of the ham-mers is incorporated into the company’s line ofbreakers, crushers and shears, according to themanufacturer. Comet Breaker’s crusher seriesof products includes 25 models of one- andtwo-cylinder motor rotating and one-cylinder fixedtype crushers and shears. Comet also carriesthumbs and stone grapples.

TTrraammaaccTramac’s V1800 is an addition to its line of heavy-range

hydraulic breakers. The V1800 is for carriers from 44,100 to 77,200 lbs.

(20,000 to 35,017 kg) and has an operating weight of 3,913lbs. (1,775 kg). With an operating pressure of 2,394 psi (165bar), the V1800 has a flow range of 37 to 58 gpm (140 to 220Lpm). This hydraulic breaker is rated at an impact energyclass of 6,000 ft.-lbs. and has an impact frequency range of310 to 500 blows per minute. The tool diameter is 5.5 in. (14cm).

A one-piece bushing is one of the features incorporatedinto the V1800. The principal wear parts, including the bush-ing, are field-replaceable without dismounting the breakerfrom the carrier or removing any tierods. Up to 2.5 gpm (9.5 Lpm) can bediverted through the integrated flowcontrol to protect the breaker from car-rier overflow. A high back-pressuretolerance of 363 psi (25 bar) allows theV1800 to be installed on a wide rangeof carriers.

As with all Tramac heavy-rangebreakers, the V1800 maximizes pro-ductivity and reduces the transfer ofpotentially damaging energy back tothe carrier with variable-speed breakertechnology. This technology senseschanges in material hardness and auto-matically adjusts the breaker to theoptimal combination of impact energyand striking rate. Additionally, an ener-gy recovery system recycles recoil energy and adds it to thenext blow, according to the manufacturer.

Maintenance for the Tramac heavy-range breaker line isminimal due to a blank fire protection feature that preventsmetal-to-metal contact that can damage a hammer. Theheavy-duty, abrasion-resistant cradle also protects the ham-mer and its internal components from damage and excessivewear. The cradle also is silenced to reduce noise on the jobsite.

AAttllaass CCooppccooThe SB 452 is Atlas Copco’s final addition to its line of

solid body hydraulic breaker attachments. The slim one-piece design contains all integral parts in the same iron alloycasting.

The SB 452 offers a highpower-to-weight ratio andboasts a maximum impactrate of 1,260 blows perminute, a 61-percentincrease over its predeces-sor. Overall operating effi-ciency has been improvedby 23 percent.

The 972-lb. (441 kg)breaker requires oil flow of14.5 to 27.7 gal. per minute(55 to 105 Lpm) at a pres-sure range of 1,450 to2,175 psi and is suitable forcarriers in the 7- to 14-ton (6.3 to 12.7 t) weight class.

IInnddeeccooIndeco North America’s line of HP Series breakers has

expanded to include the HP 25000. This breaker bringspower and performance to rock breaking applications wherehydraulic hammers previously could not be considered.

Prior to the HP 25000, the largest production breakerswere in the 16000 ft./lb. class. If the application called for alarger hammer, blasting was required. To meet the increasingdemand for a larger sized production breaker, Indecodesigned and engineered a solution by producing the HP25000.

At 10 ft. 10 in. (3.3 m) tall, the HP 25000 has an operat-ing weight of 24,370 lbs. (11,054 kg) andan MBMB ft./lb. class rating of 25000. Itcan handle tools with diameters morethan 10 in. (25.4 cm) and fits excava-tors weighing from 135,000 to 330,000lbs. (61,235 to 149,685 kg). A hydraulicflow of 110 to 137 gpm (416 to 519 Lpm)and up to 2600 psi provide high impactstrikes ranging from 240 to 460 blows perminute.

The HP 25000 is not only powerful, butefficient, boasting Indeco’s intelligent vari-able speed and power system, which sens-es the hardness of the material being bro-ken and automatically adjusts the force perblow for optimal hydraulic efficiency. Thebreaker’s mounting bracket is compatiblewith the Indeco HP 16000’s, enabling the samecarrier to accept two distinct breakers with min-imal downtime.

Several key changes have beenmade to the four-tine, orange peelgrapple line-up. Thesechanges are beingimplemented toimprove overall per-formance and dura-bility, according tothe manufacturer.

These changes include:• Upper head and connecting link have been re-designed,

allowing the hoses to be re-routed to come over the top of thematerial handler jib, allowing for a cleaner hose joint and lesslikelihood of hoses becoming torn off in scrap handlingapplications.

• Bolt-on cylinder covers are now standard on all mod-els, 1/2 yd. and larger. The covers and bolt-heads arerecessed to prevent them from getting caught on materials.

• Bolt-on access plates on the sides of the tines preventmaterials from entering, yet allowing easy access for servic-ing when required.

• High torque, heavy duty rotation motors do not requirea case drain line. Internal tooth, rotation bearing allowsmotor to be mounted inside the rotation head to ensure max-imum protection. One yd. and larger models use dual rota-tion motors.

All grapples still come with AR 500, abrasion resistantsteel on the tine tips, use hardened and oversized pins andbushings. The tines employ a boxed design for maximumstrength and all come with a magnet hook in the bottom cen-ter of the grapple.

IInnddeeccooIndeco’s Multi 1000 increases the

range of its “non-impact” products. Designed to meet the needs of the

American market, where large-sizeequipment is more popular, the Multi

1000 is the ideal tool forlarge-scale demolitionwork and can be mounted

on carriers from 79,500 to132,500 lbs. (36,060 to

60,101 kg).

AAttllaass CCooppccooAtlas Copco has introduced two hydraulic pulverizer

demolition attachments. Combining powerful crushingforces with short cycle times, the pulverizer is ideal for lightto medium building demolition, secondary concrete reduc-tion and material separation, according to the manufacturer.

The BP2900 bulk pulverizer attachment supplies 399 tons(362 t) of maximum cutting force and 125 tons (113 t) ofcrushing force at the jaw tip. With a service weight of 6,460lbs. (2,930 kg), it operates at a maximum pressure of 5,075

psi, accepts a maximum hydraulic flow of 92 gpm (348Lpm), and is suitable for carriers in the 27.5 to 38.5 ton (25-to 35-t) weight class.

The tool has an angular design with a 37.4 in. (95 cm) jawopening and an 18.9 in. (48 cm) working width.

The DP 2000 hydraulic demolition pulverizer attachmentoffers 292 tons (265 t) of maximum cutting force and 94 tons(85 t) of crushing force at the jawtip. With a service weight of 4,520lbs. (2,050 kg), the unit is suitablefor carriers in the 20 to 30 ton (18 to27 t) weight class.

Accepting a maximum hydraulicflow of 66 gpm (250 Lpm), the DP2000 utilizes a straight saw designthat allows the pulverizer’s jaw toopen 30.7 in. (78 cm).

The pulverizers are con-structed of rugged compo-nents created throughFinite Element Method(FEM) design, whichadds durability by applyingadditional support components only where nec-essary. FEM ensures that the attachments have the requiredstrength to withstand the extreme loads of various demoli-tion applications while keeping the unit lightweight, accord-ing to the manufacturer.

The units hydraulically rotate 360 degrees, allowing formore efficient operation and handling, and a built-in rotationprotection system, which reduces wear and tear on the carri-er. The hydraulic cylinders on the pulverizers are guarded forfull protection from outside debris. Replaceable teeth andtooth plates on the jaws are practical for performing mainte-nance in the field and replaceable blades effectively cut rebaras the tool penetrates through concrete. The blades arereversible to provide longer service life.

multiprocessor is availablein nine different models tofit excavator weights from3.8 to 77 tons (3.5 up to 70t). Geith precision multi-processors utilize five dif-ferent jaw types that can beinterchanged quickly formaximum versatility: con-crete jaws, steel shearjaws, pulverizing jaws, combination jaws and tankjaws.

GGeenneessiiss AAttttaacchhmmeennttssGenesis Attachments has expanded

its Genesis Demolition Recycler(GDR) line to include theGDR 150 and GDR300. The modelsjoin the GDR 200for processingconcrete inboth demo-lition andr e c y c l i n gapplications.

Designed forthird-member use on 16.5 and 33 ton (15 and 30 t) machines, the new model GDRs deliver 85 tons (77 t) of crushing forceat the tip for the GDR 150 and 148 tons (134 t) for the GDR300. The GDR 150 offers a jaw opening of 26 in. (66 cm)and jaw depth of 25 in. (63.5 cm), while its larger counter-part, the GDR 300, has a jaw opening of 42 in. (106.7 cm)and a jaw depth of 28 in. (71 cm).

Quick cycle times and tremendous crushing forces aremade possible through use of a regeneration valve and alarge-bore cylinder, respectively, according to the manufac-turer.

“Both of these models bring an added dimension to thedemolition contractor’s operation,” according to DanRaihala, Genesis Attachments’ design engineer. “They nowhave the ability to utilize a lighter-weight, yet more powerfulprocessing tool on a standard or high-reach machine, whichcan really open the door to previously unbiddable projects.”

Both models, like the GDR 200 before them, can beordered as any of three available configurations: shearing, concrete cracking, or concrete pulverizing. With this range ofchoices, contractors crack/crush concrete; cut pipe, rebar orstructural steel; or, with the tooth-heavy pulverizer configu-ration, demolish or downsize oversized concrete in a con-crete recycling application.

By Rebecca RagainCEG CORRESPONDENT

The Berkeley Hills, separating California’s Alameda andContra Costa counties, have always presented a challenge interms of transportation. In the early 1900s, travelers bravedthe Broadway Tunnel, built with timber supports 320 ft.(97.5 m) below the summit. At 1,040 ft. (317 m) long and 17ft. (5.2 m) wide, the tunnel was only wide enough for one-way traffic.

The Broadway Tunnel was eventually replaced by a two-bore tunnel, a.k.a. the Caldecott Tunnel.

Opened in 1937, the twin bores are still in use today, onefor each direction of traffic traveling along state Route 24between Orinda and Oakland. They are augmented by athird bore, completed in 1964, with “pop-up” lane controlthat makes it possible to reverse the traffic flow of the mid-dle bore depending on commute conditions.

Over the years, off-peak traffic has increased, making itdifficult to keep vehicles moving. Weekend traffic, in partic-ular, has become so unpredictable that it’s not uncommon onSaturdays and Sundays for the direction of traffic in the cen-ter bore to be reversed a half dozen times or more.

Afourth bore has been in the works for years; California’sdepartment of transportation, Caltrans, said that the first pub-lic meeting on the topic took place in 1992. But until recent-ly, funding problems have repeatedly stalled construction ofa fourth bore.

Finally, in January, the Caldecott Tunnel Fourth BoreProject broke ground due to nearly $200 million ofAmerican Recovery and Reinvestment Act federal funding— the largest single-project ARRA investment to-date.

The entire project, from scoping through construction, will cost about $420 million and take four years to complete. It is a partnership between Caltrans and Contra Costa andAlameda agencies.

The construction contract went to Tutor-SalibaCorporation, a California company with a 50-year history inconstruction and engineering jobs. The project’s first steps, which consist of tree removal and construction of a tempo-rary soundwall 1,000 ft. (305 m) long and 35 ft. (10.7 m)high, are now underway.

Trees were removed primarily by chainsaw, instead of themore typical method of knocking them down with excava-tors; the loosening effect excavators’wheels can have on soilwas deemed a risk to storm water restriction compliance.

Tunnel excavation is scheduled to begin this summer. Atpresent, the complete details of the excavation process areundetermined. The contractor has submitted options for

review to Gall Zeidler Consultants LLC, a Virginia-basedcompany specializing in geotechnics, tunnel design, andengineering that is supporting Caltrans on the project’s tech-nical aspects.

What is known at this point is that the 41-ft. (12.5 m) wideand 3,389-ft. (1,033 m) long tunnel will be constructed by aroadheader using the sequential excavation method (SEM),also known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM).

“The major piece of equipment, the thing that everybodywill see, is the roadheader,” said Axel Nitschke, a senior tun-nel engineer with Gall Zeidler Consultants who is acting asNATM engineer for the Caldecott Tunnel project.

The 120-ton (108.9 t) roadheader will be constructed inGermany by Aker Wirth, said Nitschke; the roadheader typeis T3.20, which is specifically designed for tunneling inmedium to hard rock. The machines in the T3 series have405 hp (300 kW) cutting power and are able to excavate tun-

The 41-ft. (12.5 m) wide and 3,389-ft. (1,033 m) longtunnel will be constructed by a roadheader using thesequential excavation method (SEM), also known asthe New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

The project’s first step consisted of tree removal andconstruction of a temporary 1,000 ft. (305 m) long, 35ft. (10.7 m) high soundwall.see TUNNEL page 35

Caldecott Tunnel Addition Will Ease Commuter Painnel sections up to 8.4 yds. (7.69 m) high and9.8 yds. (8.96 m) wide from a single centralposition.

Cost was a major factor in the decision to

go with a boom-type machine, as opposed toa Tunnel Boring Machine.

“If you have a tunnel boring machine, thatis a huge, custom-made investment,” saidNitschke. (Although roadheaders aren’t

manufactured in great numbers, neither arethey typically built to order like TBMs are.)

Nitschke said that tunnel engineers gener-ally don’t even consider using a TBM for atunnel that isn’t considerably longer than .6mi. (1 km); the cost of investment rarely willbe recouped during the construction of ashorter tunnel.

In addition, a roadheader is more adapt-able and thus better suited to a job encom-passing a variety of rock types, of which theFourth Bore project is an example. In com-parison, the cutter head of a TBM is very dif-ficult to change once the machine has beenmanufactured.

“If you have very changeable geology…you can run into trouble with a TBMbecause you can’t change anything,” saidNitschke.

One of the advantages of SEM is the abil-ity to adjust the excavation process depend-ing on the conditions of each tunnel section. This is possible because each portion of tun-nel is excavated and supported, one at a time, before moving on to the next. Holes will bedrilled in each upcoming section so engi-neers “can get an idea of what the groundwill look like,” said Nitschke.

In some sections, the roadheader’s cuttinghead will be able to grind and excavate the

rock; in other sections, controlled blastingmay be required.

Tunnel support includes rock boltsinstalled in a radial pattern around theperimeter of the tunnel, lattice girder com-posed of steel rods bent into an arch-shapedstructure, and shotcrete sprayed into place onthe roof and sidewalls.

Nitschke pointed out that successfullyworking with shotcrete in a tunneling situa-tion is a fine art. Not only does the concreteneed to be properly mixed to achieve thenecessary strength and drying time, but italso must be applied expertly using special-ized equipment that holds and manipulatesthe spray nozzle.

Nitschke said, “[Applying shotcrete]requires a lot of skill and experience; noteverybody can do it… Even with high-qual-ity material, if you have a bad nozzle man hecan screw up the shotcrete.”

Months of preparation lie ahead before itis time for shotcrete specialists to prove theirskills in the Caldecott Tunnel. In the mean-time, crews continue to build sound andretaining walls while the contractor, projectowners, and consultants work together todecide which construction methods andequipment will be used later.

Crews began work on the Caldecott Tunnel Fourth Bore Project in May due to near-ly $200 million of ARRA federal funding.

With Numerous Projects Needed,Ore. Starts Busy Work Schedule

Suddenly, Portland’s worst traffic jam ison the weekends.

“It’s kind of like remodeling a house andstill living in it,” he said. “We’re just going tohave to live with it for a few months.”

Certainly, the bridge is showing its age. Started in 1977, the I-205 bridge was

completed in 1982. The bridge joints holding together the

southbound and northbound decks of theGlenn Jackson are getting old,” said JasonTell, regional ODOT manager.

The bridge carries 140,000 vehicles a day.Without the joints, built to help the bridgesections move with traffic for 25 to 30 years, the entire deck would come apart.

Replacing them isn’t easy. Each joint sec-tion is encased in concrete that’s reinforcedwith rebar and is approximately two lanes inwidth.

Crews are using jackhammers to getthrough the first few inches of concrete. After that, workers must clear the old jointswith hand tools.

Cutting through the rebar with powerfulpneumatic equipment would damage the

decks. During week night closures, the road

crews are opening the joints and temporarilyresealing them with asphalt that serves as aplug that cars can drive over.

During the weekend closures, workersreplace the joints and reseal them in con-crete. So, no matter how big the road crew, none of the lanes can be reopened until theconcrete cures.

At the same time, Garrett said, ODOT isexploring ways to ease the snarls and fre-quent fender-benders that have come with it.

Among other things, ODOT officialshope new electronic warning signs on localstreets will prompt some drivers to findroutes other than freeways.

Of course, to get over the Columbia River, the only other option is I-5’s InterstateBridge. For the past month, the gridlock gutpunch has hit northbound I-5 equally hard,as drivers try to avoid the Glenn Jackson clo-sures.

After promoting ODOT’s TripCheck.comWeb site, Garrett had this advice formotorists: “You need planning. You needpreparation. And you need patience.”

Bomag Asphalt Pavers Feature Low-Profile Engine HoodSECT ION

Paving

The redesigned BF814 and BF815 paversfrom Bomag now feature a low-profileengine hood for improved operator visibility. Both the engine and hood have been lowered6 in. (15 cm) to give the operator a betterview of both sides of the machine.

Built with UNIMAT 2 screed assemblies, the BF814 and BF815 offer 8- to 14-ft. (2.4to 4.2 m) and 8- to 15-ft. (2.4 to 4.5 m) stan-dard paving widths, respectively. The newpavers are able to handle a wide variety ofapplications — from paving secondaryroads and city streets to small asphalt repairand resurfacing jobs. Additionally, the screed

extensions are hydraulically controlled, allowing operators to change paving widths“on-the-go” within the entire paving range.

Though primarily intended for commer-cial paving jobs, BF814 and BF815 offermainline paver performance and features.Powered by 85-hp (63 kW), water-cooledCummins turbo diesel engines, the BF814and BF815 offer production not typicallyfound with comparable-class pavers.Combined with a load-sensing hydraulicsystem that delivers power only when need-ed, the pavers can maintain impressivepaving speeds up to 180 ft. (55 m) per

minute and travel speeds up to 360 ft. (110m) per minute, all while remaining fuel effi-cient.

The screed design on the BF814 andBF815 utilizes a formed leading edge thatmaximizes material flow and makes it possi-ble to pave at depths ranging from 0 to 6 in.(0 to 15 cm). The screed can be crowned orinverted up to 2 in. (5 cm) for maximumpaving control, and is equipped with a vibra-tor and propane heaters to assure consistentmaterial flow. Hydraulic depth controls andurethane track pads also are standard.

For further material flow consistency, the

screed extensions are fitted with materialaugers. Designed to provide steady and reli-able material delivery at all paving widths, the augers are reversible and can be con-trolled automatically or manually.

Both pavers feature a low-deck configura-tion with dual operator’s stations to simplifycontrol and increase visibility. They can beoperated from either side of the platform, orboth at the same time. Additionally, machinecontrols are laid out for maximum operatorcomfort and ease of use, according to themanufacturer.

Featuring 8-ton (7.2 t) capacity dual-slatconveyor systems, the hoppers on the BF814and BF815 can be raised more than 6-ft. (1.8m) high for complete access to the crawlersystem undercarriage. This simplifiesrequired maintenance and cleaning, whileallowing for conveyor and track-chainadjustment without having to crawl under-neath the paver.

New service entry points make for easyaccess to the paver’s engine. Maintenanceconcerns also are reduced with the additionof track fenders as standard equipment. Bykeeping the tracks clean, the fenders helpreduce excess wear to the track assembly. The tracks are self-cleaning with sealedrollers, while both the drive and idler sprock-ets are heat treated to prevent wear.Furthermore, screed wear plates on both themain screed and extensions are constructedof heavy-duty, abrasion-resistant 400 brinellhardness steel, which bolt-on for easyreplacement.

The BF814 and BF815 are available withTopcon’s System Five Screed Automation.Using a “non-contacting” sonic sensor sys-tem, Screed Automation allows for pavingwithout cumbersome skis or string lines andprovides joint matching without actuallycontacting any surfaces.

Other optional equipment includes aswivel-mounted hydraulic tow-type truckhitch with bumper rollers, ditch plates, fail-safe brakes, working lights and a simpleMoba automatic joint matcher system. TheMoba system controls mat depth automati-cally by way of a sonic sensor, eliminatingthe need for manual control.

Bomag Adds Asphalt Managerto Heavy Tandem Roller

The BW278AD-4 AM tandem roller nowoffers Bomag’s asphalt manager intelligentcompaction system. The 78-in. roller wasintroduced at the World of Asphalt show inCincinnati.

The asphalt manager system automatical-ly optimizes the roller’s compaction per-formance during operation. The system con-tinuously measures the stiffness of theasphalt mat, and automatically increases ordecreases the compaction force where need-ed. The real time BOP display lets the oper-ator constantly monitor the asphalt surfacetemperature, material stiffness, roller speedand amplitude. Proof rolling with the asphaltmanager system allows base work to beinspected prior to paving.

Like the original BW278AD-4 introducedin 2008, the new asphalt manager-equippedroller offers improved operator ergonomicsand controls, better performance and greatereconomy, according to the manufacturer.

The redesigned cockpit with sliding/swiv-el seat provides improved operator comfortand visibility, reduced fatigue, and increasedefficiency. The swivel seat makes it easy forthe operator to adjust positions withoutswitching seats, while providing a clear viewof the roller drum edges.

When the seat position is reversed, thejoystick controls reverse automatically fornatural right/left, forward/back control. An

intuitive instrument cluster provides respon-sive, easy-to-read feedback of machine vitalsand mat conditions.

The BW278AD-4 AM also featuresBomag’s ECOMODE system, which canreduce fuel costs. The ECOMODE systemautomatically optimizes the performance ofthe 130-hp (97 kW) Cummins diesel engine, matching its output to the power required forcompaction. This feature also reduces engineemissions and lowers job site noise.

The maximum frequency of 3,000 vibra-tions per minute (vpm) allows the roller towork quickly to achieve density on variousmixes. The vibration frequency is infinitelyvariable from 2,500 to 3,000 vpm, allowingthe rollers to be used in a wide variety ofapplications. The maximum centrifugalforce is 55,575 lbs.

Additional features include a single hoodfor easy service access from a standing posi-tion, flush-mounted ROPS/FOPS for ease ofworking next to walls and guard rails, block-type drum isolators, hinged scraper bars andimproved optional night paving lights.Larger water tanks permit longer operationbetween refills, while new nozzles and aninterval water spray system reduce wateruse.

For more information, call 309/853-3571or visit www.gobomag.com.

Ritchie Bros. Denver AuctionBreaks Company Record

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers broke its recordfor the highest value equipment item eversold in a Denver auction during a two-daymulti-million dollar unreserved public auc-tion at the company’s permanent site inDenver, Colo., on June 10 and 11.

More than 1,900 registered bidders from32 countries, including 45 U.S. states andnine Canadian provinces competed for 1,400equipment items, trucks and cranes. Bidswere placed in person and online in real timeon the Ritchie Bros. Web site.

The highest value equipment item sold inthe auction was a 2006 Manitowoc 16000440-ton (400 t) self-erecting crawler crane— the largest Manitowoc crawler crane eversold in company history. A buyer fromCalifornia purchased the crane for $2.5 mil-lion. The same buyer also purchased thehighest priced rough terrain crane in the auc-tion — a 2007 Grove RT9130E 130-ton (118t) for $675,000.

“All the cranes sold in the auction —including the Manitowoc 16000 440-toncrawler crane — performed well. Overall itwas a very successful auction,” said SteveMerich, regional manager of Ritchie Bros.“The fact that we conducted a large craneauction last year and had a solid marketingstrategy in place to advertise these cranesreally paid off. Not only did we attract many

on-site bidders on auction day interested inthese cranes, but also we had equally stronginterest online.”

Prior to the Denver auction, the highestvalue equipment item ever sold at the sitewas an unused 2008 Manitowoc 14000 220-ton (200 t) self-erecting crawler crane thatsold for $1.75 million in October 2009. BothManitowoc crawler cranes were consignedby Energy Transportation Inc., a Casper,Wyo. based heavy haul and crane and rig-ging company.

Other late model Grove rough terrain andhydraulic truck cranes sold to out-of-statebuyers in the auction included a 2006 GroveTMS990E 90-ton (81 t) 8 x 4 x 4 hydraulictruck crane purchased online by a buyerfrom Ontario, Canada and a 2008 GroveRT890 90-ton rough terrain crane and a 2007Grove RT760E 60-ton (54 t) rough terraincrane purchased by buyers from Ohio.

Telescopic forklifts, skid steer loaders, hydraulic excavators, loader backhoes, wheel loaders, motorgraders, motor scrap-ers, trenchers and crawler tractors, trucks andtrailers were amongst the large selection ofother equipment items sold in the auctionwith no minimum bids or reserve prices.
