Black History Month—February, 2014 A Century of Black Life, History and Culture

The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amend-ment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching

and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History

(ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick

Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebra-tions, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.

Talking About Books-2PM

Last Tuesday of Each Month

January 27 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings – Maya Angelou

In this first of five volumes of autobiography, poet Maya Angelou recounts a youth filled with disappoint-ment, frustration, tragedy, and finally hard-won independence. Sent at a young age to live with her grand-mother in Arkansas, Angelou learned a great deal from this exceptional woman and the tightly knit black community there. These very lessons carried her throughout the hardships she endured later in life, in-cluding a tragic occurrence while visiting her mother in St. Louis and her formative years spent in Califor-nia--where an unwanted pregnancy changed her life forever. Marvelously told, with Angelou's "gift for language and observation," this "remarkable autobiography by an equally remarkable black woman from Arkansas captures, indelibly, a world of which most Americans are shamefully ignorant. "

February 24 - All the Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr

A New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jew-el. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the re-sistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnifi-cent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill”

Scams

I have written in previous newsletters about scammers who prey on older adults. Believe me when I tell you I hear many scenarios reported by our own residents! Did you know you are never too young, old or educated

to fall victim to a scam? Did you know that scam predators steal $2.9 billion each year (according to the MetLife Mature Market Institute)? Did you know that one out of every five Americans over the age of 65 fall victim to such crimes? Be extra careful this year! Education about this thievery is the best weapon!

Inclement Weather

In the event of inclement weather, the Senior Center follows the lead of the local school district (West Windsor-Plainsboro) in determining closings. If there is a de-layed opening of the schools, check with the Senior Center as to the schedule (799-9068). The offices will remain open unless a state of emergency has been declared. Announcements are made on Comcast Channel 27 and Verizon Fios Channel 42 and on the Township Website: www.westwindsornj.org.
