Playwrights Notes

When most of us think of the 1950's, we think of rocken' roll, greasers, hot rods, Elvis, Annette, Fabian, D.A. haircuts and teenage rebel-lion. But there was a flip side to this era: the side of harmony, innocence and thesincerity of dreams. It is the side that's been lost in the shuffle of progress. It was atime when most parents and kids listened and danced to the same music; whenfamilies partook of the ritual of gathering in front of the TV to watch their favor-ite variety shows, like The Ed Sullivan Show or The Perry Como Show. It was a timewhen every family worked hard to fulfill the American Dream.

It was a period when four-part guy groups harmonized their way across theairwaves, jukeboxes and hi-fis of the country. Throughout the land they wouldstand at a quartet of microphones, crooning a multitude of chaperoned prom-goers into dreamy romance.

They wore dinner jackets and bow ties (or perhaps cardigans and white bucks). Each move was drilled to precision. Each vocal arrangement soared to stratosphericheights of harmony. This sound crested right before rock en' roll stole the heart-beat of music across the globe.

During this time, guys across the country banded together to sing in thebasement for fun. If things worked out they might be hired to sing at weddings, conventions, proms and country club socials. Inspired by the success of the re-cording stars, they made plans to zoom into careers of fame and fortune. But themusical taste of the U.S.A. was changing, and the country would not stop to listento their dreams.

This is the story of such a group: Forever PlaidOnce upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie)

who loved to sing. They all met in high school, when they joined the audiovisualclub (1956). Discovering they shared an affection for music and entertaining, they got together and dreamed of becoming like their idols: The Four Aces, TheFour Lads, The Four Freshmen, The Hi-Lo's and The Crew Cuts. They rehearsed inthe basement of Smudge's family's plumbing supply company. It was here theybecame Forever Plaid: a name that connects the continuation of traditional valuesof family, home and harmony. Although rock en' roll was racing down the fast lanelike a candy apple '''Vette,'' they believed in their music. As their sound devel-oped, they sang at family gatherings, fundraisers, and eventually graduated tosupermarket openings and proms. They had little time for romance or leisure for

2

Page 5: WEST VALLEYLIGHT OPERA

they supported their fantasy by holding down day jobs: Frankie was in dentalsupplies, Jinx was into auto parts, Smudge was in bathroom fixtures, Sparky was inbetter dresses. They devoted themselves to their singing at nights and on week-ends. Then, finally, they landed their first big gig at the Airport Hilton cocktailbar: the Fusel Lounge.

Feb. 9, 1964: En route to pick up their custom-made plaid tuxedos, they wereslammed broadside by a school bus filled with eager Catholic teens. The teenswere on their way to witness the Beatles make their U.S. television debut on TheEd Sullivan Show and miraculously escaped uninjured. The members of ForeverPlaid were killed instantly. It is at that moment, when their careers and lives ended, that the story of Forever Plaid begins.

Through the Power of Harmony and the Expanding Holes in the Ozone Layer,in conjunction with the positions of the planets and all that astro-technical stuff, they are allowed to come back to perform the show they never got to do in life.

And, having completed their Mission of Harmony, our men in plaid mustreturn to the cosmos. Although they may be gone, through this production theirdreams live on forever.

GAIL FARMER (Costumer) - Gail makes her debut on ourWVLO staff, but she's been sewing since she was 10 years old.She found her way to the theater world by way of her hus-band, who, in one of his many mid-life crises decided to be-come an actor! Gail started sewing costumes for his variousperformances and soon was enlisted as a "stitcher". Well, shehas now stitched her way through various productions atHillbarn Theatre for the past 3 years as well as for LyricTheatre's "Gypsy Baron" and "Patience". Gail stepped into

the role as costumer for "Much Ado About Nothing" for Shady Shakespeare anddesigned the spooky Nosferatu for Hillbarn Theatre's recent production of"Dracula". We hope that since she didn't have to "stitch" too much for this showthat we can persuade her to return for another one in the future that will reallyuse her talents!!!

MICHAEL GLEN MUNOZ (Lighting Designer) - Michaellights up his l oth production for WVLO, his most recent be-ing "Kiss Me, Kate" (in which he also appeared on stage as oneof the gangsters). He has also done lighting designs for productions atWoodminster Amphitheater for "Carousel", "Barnum" and"My Fair Lady" as well as "Broadway Babies" in SF.He earnedhis BA in Fine Arts at SJSU with a minor in dance.

and cultural programs such as ours. Here

in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have

many companies that have initiated such

programs. Remember, matching contri-

butions are not automatic. YOU must

notify your employer of your donation,

usually at the time you make it. If you

are employed by one of these companies

and are one of our supporters, take ad-

vantage of this wonderful way to support

one of your favorite non-profit associa-

tions, WVLO. It isn't too late to match

your contribution for this season.

Corporate Bonus

Whenever you donate to a non-profit

group like WVLOA, you can double your

contribution to the organization by tak-

ing advantage of your company's match-

ing gift program (even after retirement).

Perhaps the most popular way for com-

panies to make charitable contributions

is through a matching contribution pro-

gram wherein the company will match,

usually one-to-one, the donation one of

their employees gives to a favorite char-

ity. And often, these companies will only

match contributions made to develop arts
