In 2011, the garden donated over 560 bags of food totaling over 2200 pounds of fresh

produce into the West Salem neighborhood. We have recently completed work to reduce

the shade within the newly fenced garden area and are expanding our planting area as well as seeking additional contributors.

Our neighborhood garden is located at 501 S Green Street, at the corner of Green and

Bank streets. We are on a land parcel made available by the generosity of Piedmont

International University. The garden operating cost is defrayed through funding received

from the West Salem Neighborhood Association, the West Salem Garden Club,

individuals and corporate contributors. Neighbor and gardener supporters, Del and Dee

Perry, provide the garden’s needed access to water. Mayflower Seafood and Harris Teeter

have provided their bags for our produce distribution. The NC Cooperative Extension

Service provides us with research based guidance and opportunities for training. Forsyth

County extension agent, Craig Mauney, and Community Gardening extension agent,

Mary Jac Brennan, have provided ongoing assistance and are recognized as contributors

to the garden’s ongoing success. The garden is featured in the West Salem Garden Tours

and the NC Cooperative Extension Community Gardens Tour, and we are available to other groups to tour by appointment.

Our garden contains both a large communal vegetable garden, worked by all garden

participants and several small raised earth plots that are available for individual and

family assignment on an annual first come basis. We grow vegetables, flowers and herbs.

You need not be a garden expert to become involved and be a contributor. You only need

to possess a desire for trying community gardening for a planting season for the individual

plots or a volunteer time commitment of a couple of hours a week to help out in the communal garden.

Community gardening is a fun and rewarding volunteer experience and helps build a

feeling of community. Many gardeners find their time spent in the garden to be a

refreshing and relaxing counter to today’s daily stress and busy environment, and it

produces some pretty good food and fellowship too. We are seeking gardeners,

neighbors, donors and contributors with interest in joining us in our ongoing adventure. Stop by and watch us grow.

West Salem Community Garden

Beginning a new growing season this month!

The garden is a successful all-volunteer organization that is

making a positive difference in and for our West Salem

neighborhood and community. The garden began in 2004

and has grown and expanded over the past 8 years. We have

maintained our core mission to grow and provide fresh

produce to both our gardeners and those in the neighborhood

who can benefit from our labor to meet their food needs.

Meet Leah Stroble. Leah is a first grader at Arts Based Elementary and lives on West Street with her parents, Jamie and Byron. She just loves West Salem! Leah enjoys walking her dog, playing on the playground, walking to friends’ houses and Old Salem. She also loves to take the secret trail to Washington Park for a visit on the beach along Salem Creek. The Strobles have lived in West Salem for 7 years- 3 of those in their current home across the street from Granville Park. On a rainy day, Leah loves to visit the intermittent stream in the park to see if it is running.

Leah has an orange cat named Hatfield and a dachshund named Reuben. Hatfield appreciates the social life of the neighborhood, as there are many other neighborhood cats to hang out with. Reuben, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoys marking his territory in Granville Park.

You might catch Leah strolling down the 600 block of Poplar Street because it’s her favorite part of the neighborhood. She just loves the “fairy trees” along the road that bloom in the spring.

Have You Heard? Have you heard… about the West Salem Civic Club that is? The Club is re-

introducing itself to the community and welcomes YOU to become a

member!

The West Salem Civic Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization first

organized by veterans returning from World War II for the purpose of

helping schools, churches and residents of the community, as well as

providing a forum for social interaction in the neighborhood. Its members

also constructed a facility that has become one of West Salem’s rare and

hidden community treasures. Located at 1010 Hutton Street just past Diggs-

Latham Elementary and across from the entrance to Washington Park, the

building is an all-purpose structure that boasts around 1,800 square feet with

plenty of meeting and activity space, a commercial-style kitchen, two

bathrooms and even a working fireplace. With almost 2! acres and

adequate parking, it is an ideal venue for many types of community

activities, meetings, parties and other events. So the Club is right here…

now all it needs is YOU!

Join us and let us know your ideas on what types of fun and positive

activities you’d like to see happening in your community. Whether it be

cookouts, pot luck dinners, arts & crafts workshops, game nights,

networking events, service projects or anything else you can imagine… let’s

make it happen. Over the coming year we’d like to host programs for

children, families, seniors and adults of all ages to make the Civic Club a

place you enjoy and share in the fellowship of our local community.

Anyone and everyone are welcome to become members in the Club and the

facility to improve our community – so please join us! In 2012, we’re

getting the word out to let you know what the Civic Club and ‘that place

around the corner’ is all about. You can contact us at

[email protected] for more info or “Like” the organization on

Facebook.

In addition to public & community events hosted by the Civic Club, the

facility is also available to hold private events, meetings, parties and

gatherings for a small fee to cover operating costs. If interested, check out

the classified in the back of this newsletter.

John & Joann

Q: What’s the difference between all the West

Salem neighborhood organizations (i.e WSNA,

WSHA, Civic Club, etc.)?

A: The West Salem Neighborhood Association

(WSNA) is a non-profit entity existing for all

residents in our neighborhood without membership

requirements. All neighbors (both renters and owners) are

automatically a part of the West Salem Neighborhood

Association. The WSNA puts this newsletter together,

maintains a website (www.mywestsalem.com), has a

constitution and bylaws, holds monthly gatherings, hosts

events (both social and purpose-driven) and caters to the

needs of our neighborhood. You’re already a member, so

we’d love your involvement!

Its mission: to reach out to each other utilizing various

resources to achieve positive change in our community.

We have joined together as an association to ensure that

our neighborhood continues to be a safe, thriving,

attractive, and united community for all who live, work,

and play here.

The West Salem Historical Association (WSHA) was

founded in 2004 by Michael Bricker with a mission to

showcase research, present, and trumpet the 200+ year

history of West Salem. It requires membership, but no dues

or meetings exist at this time. The WSHA is geared for

those interested in the historical side of West Salem. To

join, contact Michael Bricker | [email protected]

The West Salem Civic Club is a non-profit organization

explained in the article to the left. It requires membership

and is geared towards social events and the fellowship of

our local community. To join, see article for more

information.
