Our Adjudicators

Piano and Vocal classes – Ross

Simonds Ross Simonds started studying music at the age

of eight when a nearby farmer and family friend

decided that Ross should take piano lessons,

purchasing for him his first instrument. It was a

wise decision and a worthwhile investment as

Ross chose music for his educational career and

completed his Bachelor of Music Degree in

Piano Performance at Gordon College, in

Boston Mass. There, he was part of the Gordon

Chamber Singers, touring internationally,

holding vocal and later, accompanist positions.

Ross taught beginner to advanced piano, music

history, and music theory at first the Canadian

Conservatory of Music, and later the Maritime

Conservatory of Music, in Halifax, NS. He also

undertook graduate studies in Religious

Education during that time at Acadia Divinity

College in Wolfville, NS.

Following private teaching, Ross began full time work as a church musician, most recently in Toronto,

ON, where he acted as Minister of Worship, Music, and the Arts, for Bayview Glen Church. Earlier

appointments included Minister of Music, Brunswick St. Baptist Church, Fredericton, NB, and Director of

Music, First Dartmouth Baptist Church, Dartmouth, NS. During this 20 year period Ross did extensive

choral directing, accompanying (piano and organ), ensemble and orchestral conducting, and special

event production.

Ross loves to learn and has extensive continued education, having studied Church Music in various parts

of the USA and London, England, completed a Certificate in Worship Studies from the Worship Institute in

Wheaton, Illinois, and a Graduate Diploma from the Arrow Leadership Training Program, Vancouver, BC.

Ross has attended master classes over the years by several leading pianists and piano pedagogues

including: Anthony DiBonaventura (Boston University), Boris Berman (Yale University), Anton Kuerti

(University of Toronto), and Marc Durand (University of Montreal). Ross is currently working towards

certification as a Dalcroze Eurhythmics Specialist.

Ross teaches piano and voice from his Fredericton studio and has worked as Choral Director for TNB’s

Music Theatre Department, Beauty and the Beast and Oklahoma. He freelances as a choral/ band/ music

director and music consultant, most recently for Oromocto High School’s Musical Production, The Wizard

of Oz; the Fredericton Playhouse’s, Christmas at the Playhouse ; Leo Hayes High School’s Musical

Productions, Reflections on Crooked Walking and Alice in Wonderland; and NB School District 18’s,

Journey into the Arts. He also provides accompaniment for vocalists, instrumentalists, and chamber

ensembles, and enjoys playing with local bands and as a soloist in small and intimate settings. As well,

he has been thrilled to serve as a piano adjudicator for the past seven years.

4

Ross is a member of the Dalcroze Society of Canada, the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators`

Association, the New Brunswick Registered Music Teachers` Association (Council Member), and the

Fredericton Music Teachers` Association. Ross was awarded a Grant for Developing Musicians from the

Canada Council for the Arts in 2012 to pursue graduate studies in eurhythmics, sight reading, ear

training, and improvisation at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Ross is happily married with two beautiful daughters and a son-in-law.

Instrumental Classes – Dan St.Ammand

Dan taught instrumental Music for most of

his career, starting at Westisle High School,

and later in Nova Scotia.

As a professional trumpet player, he has played with many ensembles. Dan has been principal trumpet with the PEI Symphony Orchestra, the Charlottetown Jazz Ensemble, UPEI Wind Symphony, and many other ensembles for many years. Since retiring from teaching a few years ago, he has been busy recording with artists in the Maritimes. Dan played lead trumpet with the Temptations, the Spinners, and others. He also played trumpet for Anne of Green Gables at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. When not playing music, Dan spends a lot of time in his Old Town canoe, mostly in Maine and New Brunswick.
