September 6 - 29A TENDER THINGby Ben PowerWhat if Romeo and Juliet didn’t die in that double suicide in the Capulet family vault? Instead, they lived into old age, their dazzling love to endure a more commonplace tragedy. Shakespeare’s timeless poetry creates a new, deeply romantic and powerful play, and a strikingly different love story.

President's Message After a busy Spring and Summer, we are excited for our many returning as well as new programs at the Centre this Fall. Pottery and Wine Night will be back in full swing, along with our three Halloween events: Pumpkin Carving, Halloween Carnival and Murder Mystery. We will also host the ever-popular Lighting of Aberthau, the semi-annual Pottery Sale, along with Gingerbread House Decorating and ending the year with Breakfast with Santa! Please see the Special Events section pages 10-11 in this guide for details.

New this year, program registration will start on a Saturday at 9am. This change is part of a Park Board initiative to make registration easier and more convenient moving forward.

Speaking of programs, we are officially offering Pickelball for Adults and Seniors on Mondays (p.32). Also new this season is our Orff Music for Toddlers and Preschoolers (p.13), a fresh selection of Strong Healthy Kids workshops for children in grades 4-7 and their parents (p.15), Children’s Art Therapy (p.16), Christmas Cards in Watercolour (p. 21), Gush Dance (p. 22) and more.

Alissa will return from educational leave to resume her role as the Assistant Preschool Teacher with our Licensed Preschool. A big thank-you to interim teacher Krissy for her care and hard work this past year. We wish her the very best.

Highlights from Spring/Summer

The Point Grey Fiesta in June was once again a big hit with hundreds of community members descending on Trimble Park for a carnival, performances, artist booths and vendors. Many thanks to the volunteer Fiesta Committee who make this annual event possible: Richard Alexander, JT Lee and Jo Sears, along with Centre staff, Natalie and Joe. You can find Fiesta highlights – including photos of the Saturday parade and artist performances on our Facebook page @westpointgreycc.

Our Day Camps were once again hugely popular. Cool and wet weather in July threw a wrench into some of our Trimble Park Playground plans but overall it was a fun filled Summer. We welcomed over 700 children from Day Camps city wide and community members to our 28th annual Sandcastle Competition. Check out our Instagram, @westpointgreycc for highlights. At this year’s Christmas themed Movie in the Park – Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, we featured many “ugly” t-shirts, snow cones, photo booth, a BBQ, games and lots of fun!

In late August, we awarded Association Youth Scholarships to two well-deserving youth: Kaitlyn Chan and Edward Shen, for their extensive contributions to the Centre and Community. Our Winter Recreation Guide will include a full feature about them.

As always, thank you for your support and patronage. We look forward to seeing you at West Point Grey CC.

Sincerely,

David DolphinPresident, WPGCCA

Rogue Folkies Jam Session Do you play a folk musical instrument? Are you interested in playing and singing with other musicians in a jam session setting? Come to Aberthau Mansion at the West Point Grey Community Centre on a Sunday morning and meet fellow musicians to play Bluegrass, Folk and Old Time music in a beautiful setting. The amazing acoustic quality of the mansion makes it ideal for unamplified music and voices. This is an ideal opportunity for musicians to get together to experience the fun and variety of music jams. Musicians must have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of their instrument, be able to change basic chords, and understand the Nashville Numbering System and jam etiquette. It’s also helpful if you come prepared to lead a song in the jam circle. Musicians from the Rogue Folk Club (www.roguefolk.com) will be available to lead the jam sessions.Library Room240309 Free
