West Oak Lane Charter School PARENT...
Transcript of West Oak Lane Charter School PARENT...
On Friday, January 22,
2013, the West Oak Lane
Kindergarten staff spon-
sored its fifth successful par-
ent activity of the 2012-2013
school year. As families en-
joyed a Low Tea snack of
iced tea and cookies, stu-
dents performed skits with a
focus on the Reverend Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Inspired by Kindergarten
Paraprofessional Mrs. Scott
who works primarily with
homeroom 113, the entire K
staff embraced the idea of
the Low Tea, and worked
towards Friday’s accom-
plishment.
The Tea highlighted many of
the skills the students con-
tinue to acquire during the
school year. Students
demonstrated their emerging
literacy skills while creating
the activity books and in
their readings dedicated to
Dr. King. Also on display
calendar of parent volunteer
opportunities at WOLCS for
the month of February/
March 2013. Please take a
few moments to review the
calendar and sign up where
you're available.

Remember that prior to
your first time volunteering,
all individuals must submit
a Parent Volunteer Applica-
tion to the attention of Mrs.
Saintil-Middleton at
were the strengthening social
skills and manners as they
shared the light afternoon
snack.
Over fifty parents attended
the February Tea, the latest
monthly activity sponsored
by the K team, focused on
getting parents and families
more involved in their stu-
dents’ education at
WOLCS. Previous events
have included a Teddy Bear
picnic, a Harvest Feast, and
more.
The donations of food items,
beverages, and paper goods,
is appreciated. Please con-
tinue to sign up to donate
requested items and your
time. You can also access

NEW ENROLLMENT
West Oak Lane Charter is accepting applications for new students who will enroll in grades
Kindergarten through 4th in September 2013. Open Enrollment will begin on Monday, February 4,
2013 and end on Friday, March 15, 2013. Information and applications can be obtained in the
main office or on the school web-site.
REENROLLMENT
Reenrollment for current students is scheduled from Monday, February 4 - March 15, 2013.
A re-enrollment application must be submitted for ALL current students.
Families can reenroll in the main office or using the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Stay tuned for additional reenrollment information.
On Thursday, February
14, 2013, people across
the nation observed
Valentine’s Day. Here
at West Oak Lane
Charter School, stu-
dents wore red clothing.
More importantly, stu-
dents in Kindergarten
through 8th grades,
attended our second
annual “Show Me Some
Love” assembly present-
ed by our school’s CEO,
Dr. Debbera Peoples-
Lee.
Students actively par-
ticipated in Dr. Lee’s
message of mutual
respect. They were
attentive and reflected
our STARS school-wide
positive behavior ex-
pectations including
being Safe, Tolerant,
Accountable, Respect-
ful and Sympathetic.
For example, the school
-wide expectations for
being Respectful in-
clude following direc-
tions the first time giv-
en; being a good listen-
er; saying “please and
“thank you;” raising
your hand to speak; not
using obscenities or
cursing; being a good
listener; responding to
staff signals to be quiet;
and not using cell
phones at school.
In reinforcing our
school-wide expecta-
tions, Dr. Lee asked
students to remember
to model respect for
themselves, for each
other and to staff.
An instrumental ver-
sion of Aretha Frank-
lin’s hit song R-E-S-P-
E-C-T played in the
background to echo Dr.
Lee’s sentiments. In
addition, a hip-hop in-
spired video clip created
by young students fur-
ther emphasized the
message. Treats were
provided as students
exited the cafeteria.
Dr. Lee’s “Show Me
Some Love” message is
now being reviewed
each week throughout
our school. Each morn-
ing from 7:55 - 8:15AM,
students gather by
grade in the school’s
cafeteria to review our
school-wide expecta-
tions and recognize each
other for behavioral ac-
complishments. Follow-
ing is the weekly sched-
ule of morning assem-
blies:
Tues.: Grades K & 1
Wed.: Grades 6 - 8
Thurs.: Grades 2 & 3
Fri.: Grades 4 & 5
Parents are asked to
review school expecta-
tions on a regular basis.
Show Me Some Love!
“RESPECT -
You have to give it
to get it.”

WOLCS CEO

Love Your Heart This February February is American Heart
Month. Some health condi-
tions and lifestyle factors can
put people at a higher risk for
developing heart disease. You
can help prevent heart disease
by making healthy choices and
managing any medical condi-
tions you may have.
First, eat a healthy diet.
Choose healthful meals and
snack options; eat plenty of
fresh fruits and vegetables - at
least 5 servings daily; eat foods
low in saturated fat, trans fat,
and cholesterol and high in
fiber; limit salt or sodium in
your diet.
Next, try to maintain a
healthy weight. Being over-
weight or obese can increase
your risk for heart disease. To
determine whether your
weight is in a healthy range,
doctors often calculate a num-
ber called the body mass index
(BMI). If you know your
weight and height, you can
calculate your BMI at CDC's
Assessing Your Weight Web
site.
Remember to exercise regular-
ly. Physical activity can help
you maintain a healthy weight
and lower cholesterol and blood
pressure. The Surgeon General
recommends that adults should
engage in moderate-intensity
exercise for at least 30 minutes
on most days of the week.
Monitor your blood pressure.
High blood pressure often has
no symptoms, so be sure to
have it checked on a regular
basis.
Don't smoke and limit alcohol
use. Have your cholesterol
checked at least once every 5
years. Talk with your doctor
about this simple blood test.
Manage diabetes by monitor
your blood sugar levels close-
ly, and talk with your doctor
about treatment options.
Lastly, take your medicine. If
you're taking medication to
treat high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, or diabetes,
follow your doctor's instruc-
tions carefully. Ask questions
when you don't understand.
On Monday, February 11, 2013, WOLCS Kindergarten classroom 119 celebrated the 100th Day of School.
Classrooms throughout the school conducted age-specific activities to represent “100”!

This Thursday and Fri-
day, February 20th and
21st, 2013, end-of-season
All-Star games were held
at West Oak Lane Charter
School. These finals game
pitted our student boys
and girls basketball teams
against WOLCS parents
and staff.
On Thursday, in a tough
lost to the “older team,”
the twelve (12) students
on the girls team showed
off the amazing ability
they’ve developed during
their first season, which
began this past December
2012.
The boys team showed
equal prowess against
male staff members this
past Friday.
Crowds were amazed by
the skill and energy of
players on both sides of
the court.
We recognize these
homerooms for having
the most days of

do with their young learners.
Today’s reading research
emphasizes that reading in-
formational or nonfiction
books regularly is critical for
all learners. Nonfiction
books present many oppor-
tunities to learn new con-
cepts and vocabulary, as
well as broaden a student’s
view of the world. Be sure to
visit a local library or
“The more that you read, the more
things you will know. The more
you learn, the more places you’ll
go.” ~ Dr. Seuss
On Monday, March 4th, the
WOLCS Literacy Team will
again celebrate Read Across
America Day in ways both fun
and meaningful. This day re-
minds us that reading together
remains one of the most im-
portant things that families can
bookstore so that your child
can choose some nonfiction
books that interest them.
This March 4th, students in
grades K-8 will participate in
“Wacky Dress Day.” We will
also host a Hat Parade for
grades K-3.
"You're never too old, too wacky,
too wild, to pick up a book and
read with a child."

Left and right, WOLCS
Kindergarten and third grade students were
among those who joined a STARS
luncheon for improved behavior.
GO STARS!
On weekday mornings, WOLCS students can now be
found in the school’s cafeteria reviewing behavioral
expectations and acknowledging
each other for being STARs. Please be sure your child is on time daily and ask him or her
about the new WOLCS STAR cheer.
