    Part 4: Geographical Regions

Directions: Geographical regions are the way a nation is divided into regions that have the

same geography and climate. Label all of the Western Regions, cities, Waters, and Rivers onthe map below. Simply put a dot where cities need to go and write the name of the city by thedot.

Part 5: Latitude and Longitude of the West

Directions: In the following activity, you will locate places in the West using the Grid System.

The Grid System is a way of locating places on Earths surface using imaginary lines calledlatitude and longitude. When these lines cross over a place, the point at which they cross iscalled the places coordinates . The lines of latitude and longitude as well as the coordinatesare all measured in units called degrees .

Latitude lines are horizontal lines that go across the globe. They are sometimes calledparallels. Latitude lines measure a places position as either north or south of the equator. The equator is the line of latitude that divides the Earth in half horizontally. It creates theNorthern and Southern Hemispheres.

The equator is considered to be a measurement of 0 degrees. So anything located above theequator is measured as degrees north and anything south of the equator is measured asdegrees south . For example, Birmingham, Alabama is located 33 degrees north of theequator. So the rst number in Birminghams coordinate location is 33 degrees N.

Longitude lines are vertical lines that go up and down the globe. They are sometimes calledmeridians. Longitude lines measure a places position as either east or west of the primemeridian. The prime meridian is the line of longitude that divides the earth in half vertically. Itcreates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

The Prime Meridian is considered to be a measurement of 0 degrees. So anything located leftof the prime meridian is measured as degrees west and anything right of the prime meridian ismeasured as degrees east . For example, Birmingham, Alabama is located 86 degrees Westof the prime meridian. So the second number in Birminghams coordinate location is 86degrees W.

So using the grid system, Birminghams coordinates in latitude and longitude is (33 degreesNorth, 86 degrees West).

    Part 6: Geographical Regions

Directions: You have now learned more about the Wests geography and climate. Use whatyou have learned to answer the following questions in PQA format.

1.) Based on the geography and climate of the West, can you think of other reasons (otherthan what you thought of in Lesson 12) why people might have moved West in the 1800sand early 1900s?
