Finalist — Porch Street on Adele

In an effort to address climate change in Houston, Southern Green Builders introduced four energy-

efficient homes on Adele Street and Nadine Street in the Sunset Heights East community.

The eight Porch Street homes were designed to be street-facing with a front porch to encourage

interaction among neighbors. Each home was carefully designed with different finishes so that no

two homes appear alike.

Southern Green Builders used materials that would address Houston’s climate challenges, such as a

high-reflectance metal roof, spray-foam insulation and low-emissivity, double-pane windows that

help seal homes from excessive heat. According to the builder, the metal roof used for these homes

is 85 percent more efficient in repelling heat from the sun compared to a standard 30-year shingle.

Also, each home features high-efficiency air-conditioning and a humidistat to balance humidity and

cool air, which performs 17 percent better than other high-efficiency systems.

Each of the four Porch Street floor plans feature overlapping living spaces suited for entertaining

and various furniture configurations. Outdoor spaces are strategically placed to be the extension of

the living areas and to maximize the footprint of each home. Seven of the eight homes built were

sold in 2015, with the remaining home under lease with the intent of ownership.
