Trail briefsThe warmth of
community spirit lingered in the base-ment of Trail’s United Church on Nov. 19, as all hands were on deck to pull out beds and finalize arrange-ments to open the ex-treme weather emer-gency shelter.
This is the third year that La Nina, Greater Trail’s tempo-rary shelter, will open its doors to welcome
the homeless to come in out of the cold.
This year, the Ca-reer Development Services (CDS) is partnered with the Greater Trail Com-munity Skills Cen-tre and the United Church to help in-dividuals using the shelter.
The CDS already has a homelessness program in place, so to direct the shelter was a natural transi-
tion. “We support a lot of the individuals who may need to uti-lize the shelter,” said Sheila Adcock, CDS coordinator for the La Nina Program.
“We know which agencies to connect them with and we can help the person to find work, support and housing.”
Adcock said shelter is only a temporary stop, and the CDS will assist with a long-
term plan.“Every morning,
there will be an out-reach worker who will meet with the persons to find out and bring them to whatever community resources are needed for the day,” said Ad-cock.
“We have the sup-port for anyone in the community needing housing, and we can help them find it.”
Kate’s Kitchen and
the Selkirk College food program will donate food for the night, breakfast and a packed lunch for the day, if needed.
On fire... or not?The plume has
long since cleared, but a shroud of mys-tery still engulfs a Pacific Coastal plane grounded at the Trail Regional Airport.
One week follow-ing an incident at
the airport the plane remains parked, be-cause there is internal damage to the engine, said Spencer Smith, vice president of commercial services for Pacific Coastal Airlines
“It is too early to tell why there is en-gine damage, but we think it was caused by tests we did the next day.”
Smith went on to explain that the main-
tenance crew arrived the morning of Nov. 15, and did not see any damage.
A new engine is currently en route from Vancouver, and Smith said the plane should be repaired by the weekend.
Smith declined to discuss the outcome of the on-going inves-tigation.

While Grand Forks’ Kootenay Interna-tional Junior Hockey team is based in, well, Grand Forks, the team played a home/road game on Satur-day night.
The Bruins scored their largest margin
of victory on Saturday night with an 8-3 win over the Chase Heat and while the Bruins were technically the home team, the game was played to the west in Midway.
“It’s to spread things around,” said Nick Deschenes, Border Bruins’ head coach and GM. “We
are based out of Grand Forks but there are some communi-ties in the area that are aware of us and also have minor hockey programs and so it’s kind of a good way to bridge that gap.”
Deschenes said the community rallied behind the team and with the win, every-
one got their moneys worth.
He said the team also had an opportu-nity to showcase local players.
“It helps that you have Chris Osellame, who’s from Midway, and Brandon Savaia, another local player and Tyler Van Camp (both from Grand Forks) and so with all those guys in the lineup, there were definitely a few more bums in the seats,” Deschenes explained.
Deschenes said the organization could look to play more games at Midway’s Boundary Expo Rec Centre next season.
“It’s a really good ice surface. It’s flat and everything is prop-erly proportioned, it’s a little bit of a bigger ice surface. We play on the small surface (of Grand Forks Are-na) and things hap-
pen quickly but with the bigger ice surface, things slow down,” the coach and GM went on to say.

Santa Claus will return to Nelson’s downtown on Fri-day with some excit-ing new additions to make the event more festive.
To make the eve-ning more fantas-tic, organizers are inviting people to don their helpers at-tire and join in the city’s First Annual Elf Walk. This will also be the launch of the Festival of Lights as Santa turns on the newly decorated holiday trees of Baker Street.
The event goes at 5:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Baker Street.
For more than 40 years Santa Claus has been coming courte-sy of Nelson Fire De-partment to light up the holiday trees and personally meet with children. This tradi-tion is getting some extra excitement as organizers are en-couraging people to show up in their best elf attire to show San-ta their spirit of the season.
This event was in-spired by the flash
mob movement and is your opportunity to not just attend, but to be a part of the fun.
The street will also be more vibrant as a new group has start-ed a committee to in-crease Nelson’s holi-day lighting presence.
Event co-organizer Maureen Crawford notes that the addi-tion of 10,000 lights to the downtown area will bring more cheer to the holiday season.
“Our goal is to make the streets more festive for the holidays and we are working together with local groups and organizations to help make this a reality, we are off to an ex-cellent start this year, you must come out to see,” said Crawford.
The entire event is made possible by ev-eryone in Nelson, in particular local busi-nesses and organiza-tions. Without hesi-tation people have donated and volun-teered to help make this event successful. There will be popcorn courtesy of Kal Tire and apple cider from the Kootenay Coop. The Nelson Star and 103.5 The Bridge are
hosting a chili con-test. The Music Store is helping with sound, a visit from the Shaw Cable Polar Bear, and don’t forget Santa. Also the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, the Cul-tural Alliance, the City of Nelson and the Nelson Business Association are vol-unteering their time to help make this event another won-derful reason to come to town.
“Nelson is one of my favourite places to visit. I am so im-pressed at how well everyone gets togeth-er to make my stay so special, especially the children,” said Santa Claus. “This is one of my most inspiration-al stops and I’m very excited about the new additions this year. I really look forward to seeing everyone dressed up in their fa-vourite elf outfit.”
The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and Santa arrives at 6:30 p.m. He will stay until he sees every child wait-ing in line.

City councillors reflect on first year
It’s been about a year since Grand Forks city councillors Bob Kendel and Gary Smith were elected into office and both have learned a lot since they first took on their positions.
For Kendel, the year has been inter-esting.
“It’s been an ex-traordinary learning curve and probably one of the most inter-esting and challeng-ing things I’ve ever
done,” he said.

What’s new with what’s old
Another in a series of weekly roundups of Kootenay-related items appearing at auction.
An original mount-ed photo of the Koote-nay Lake sternwheeler SS Nelson sold recent-ly on eBay for $160 US.
The photo mea-sured 5 x 8 and showed the boat landed on a beach with snow-capped mountains behind it. At least 15 men (they do all ap-pear to be men) are seen toward the ship’s bow, including some-one, presumably the captain, sticking his head out the wheel-house. The photogra-pher was uncredited.
The Nelson was built in 1891 for the Columbia and Koote-nay Steam Navigation Company and mea-sured 40 meters long by eight meters wide. It plied the route be-tween Nelson, Kaslo, and Bonners Ferry, Idaho until 1897, and between Nelson and Kuskonook during construction of the BC Southern Railway in 1898-99.
It was withdrawn from service in 1913 and given a Viking fu-neral to cap Nelson’s Chahko Mika carnival on July 16, 1914.
• Postcards of New Denver and Silverton sold lately for $58 and $76.50 US, respec-tively.
The former was a
ca. 1912 real photo card of the New Den-ver waterfront as seen from the west side of Slocan Lake. The Newmarket Hotel is among the buildings readily identifiable.
The latter was a ca. 1910 lithograph show-
ing many long-lost false-front buildings, and the SS Slocan puffing away in the distance.
Similar cards have popped up before, but this may have set a re-cord price.

by Charles F. Nelson, a New Denver drug-gist and photographer who was also Liberal MLA for the Slocan riding. In 1916, he beat Conservative William Hunter by one vote, 448 to 447. Hunter handily won
the re-match four years later.
• A column two weeks ago about the sale of a rare postmark from the Taghum area mentioned in passing the mystery behind that name, bestowed by John C. Bell, a part-ner in the Lambert and Bell sawmill.
Taghum is the Chi-nook trading jargon word for six, but there is no consensus on six what in this case. Theories include six miles from the Nelson wharf or Bonnington Falls.
Two more ideas have since come forth: 45-year Taghum resident Bob Rollick suggests it’s the num-ber of creeks in the area, namely Sandy, Sproule, Bear, Eagle, Falls, and Grohman.
Ann Irving, mean-while, thinks it’s a reference to the sixth cataract above the confluence of the Kootenay and Colum-bia rivers prior to the construction of the dams. From the east, they are: Brilliant, Stonebyres (South Slocan), Lower Bon-nington, Upper Bon-nington, Corra Linn, and the one seen in old photos where the CPR and highway bridges cross the river at Taghum.
(Sir Charles Ross, who designed the ear-ly dams, named Bon-nington, Stonebyres, and Corra Linn after waterfalls on the River Clyde in Scotland.)

Sculpture TalkSergio Raffo
‘Man Waiting’ (stoneware)
Talk about standing the art world on its head. Sergio Ra o’s ceramic sculpture ‘Man Waiting’ is literal. e seven foot work shows a man standing on his head, hands and ngers entwined behind it. Eyes unseeing, teeth clenched in a gri-mace, his bare feet support a large globe. Metal screw fasteners jarringly attach deliberate breaks in the body – a trademark of Ra o’s otherworldly ceramic gures is the harshness of metal screws, bolts, shrouds or wire caging added as a stark counterpoint. e patina is dark, all black, blue and copper hues. ere is sorrow and pain hinted at in the sculpture – the literal weight of the world? - along with wonderful form; the roundness of the globe counter-ing the elongation of the upside down body. Like all of his sculp-tures, ‘Man Waiting’ is provoca-tive, powerful and moving, even somewhat unnerving.Settling in Kaslo six years ago a er immigrating to Canada from his native Cuba via Montreal, Ra o is an internationally acclaimed art-ist whose works are prominently displayed in cities throughout the Americas. His stark, eerie gures are distinctively his own, unique in every instance but with recur-ring themes. Many of the gures he sculpts are devoid of detailed features, the surfaces mottled and discoloured, burdened by apparatus. Some have spikes protruding, others no limbs or curving moon heads.
ey are unsettling on rst glance, not human (Man Waiting is one of his more recognizably human portrayals), but closer study re-veals the strength of every work. He sculpts fantastical beings that brim with unspoken messages and meaning. In his words he “approaches the human condition from the purity of imperfection.” ey are undeniably compelling.Series like Terrestrial (I, II and III, Havana, Him and Her) contain gures that combine the form
and contours found in ancient civilizations’ idols/gods with surprising, incongruous twists: deliberate cuts, spiny thorns, me-tallic impositions, or extra hands covering the head like wings or shields. His Genetic Modi cation (Con-ception, Adolescence) series is even more extreme, featureless heads are surrounded by a wire cage in the former, bodies sway from a steel bar in the latter. Ra o is not afraid to push the envelope in his work.
“When sculpting I can be
completely free, I can be egoistic,
I can be anything.”
Sergio Ra o

Personal Finance
I still recall those early years of the 1980s when high in- ation and soaring interest rates virtually crippled the econ-omy. I was a “new-bie” – a young lady just venturing out on her own, landing her rst real job at a lo-cal nancial institu-tion. No doubt, I was still very naïve about the goings-on in the world – but, my ex-periences in that role taught me invaluable life lessons which shaped me into the nancial planner I am today.
Let’s rewind the tape a wee bit. Back in the 1980s, consum-ers listened for the latest in ation gures and worried about every bump in oil prices or each mus-ing from then-central bank governor Ger-ald Bouey. e reason was because Canada’s price index at that time was rising faster than the mercury in a thermometer on a hot day.
For 12 years from
1980 to 1991, Cana-dian prices increased on average by 6.0 per cent a year, (more than three times the current average rate of in ation). us, a product a consumer would purchase for $100 in 1980 would cost that person $189 in 1991, a jump of over 89 per cent. Pric-es accelerated even faster during the early ‘80s, advancing at an annual 12 per cent clip.
By the middle of the 1980s, Ottawa had had enough. e federal government clamped down on public spending, and the Bank of Canada hiked interest rates. at combination slowed growth as well as in ation and resulted in some dif- cult economic times for this country. It is a world to which no one wants to return.
If you were a “saver” it was boom times. A one year term deposit or a high daily inter-est savings account could easily fetch a 12 percent annual rate of return. However,
if you happened to be a “borrower” - you were in for a brutal awakening!
I still recall many clients walking into the nancial institu-tion over that time period. ese were straight-up people, some with families, most of them em-ployed and feeling the overwhelming crush of trying to keep ahead of the game. In ation was run-ning amok and with it came astronomical mortgage and lending rates of more than 20 percent!
ose were incred-ibly sad days when clients would walk the “Green Mile” into the loan man-ager’s o ce and learn that foreclosure ac-tion was being taken against them. How devastating – how in-credibly cruel. It was so hard to fathom that so many people just couldn’t keep up to the high interest rates and heavy payments and were now losing their family homes.
For many young Canadians today, who
do not remember the high rates of in a-tion in the 1970s and early 1980s, it is dif- cult to appreciate why in ation mat-ters; they have only experienced a world of low and stable in- ation—in ation so low and so stable that most probably ignore it completely.
What we have wit-nessed from this low in ation and interest rate environment is a jump in the number of Canadians using their mortgages to free up cash, with 18 per cent taking out equity as the cited need for debt consoli-dation or repayment.
Recently, Jim Fla-herty and the federal Finance Department have been taking measures to further
tighten mortgage rules to address con-cerns over high Cana-dian household debt. Lenders can only is-sue home equity loans up to a maximum of 80 per cent of a prop-erty’s value — down from 85 per cent. e biggest change of all is the shortening of the maximum amor-tization period for government-backed insured mortgages to 25 years from 30 years — forcing bor-rowers to pay back their debts sooner. at will reduce the amount of interest they’ll pay over the life of the loan, but make mortgage pay-ments larger as more debt gets paid back with each payment.
e changes will create the most headaches for cash-strapped rst-time homebuyers and those consumers who are increasingly using their homes as ATMs. Still, experts argue this latest crackdown is for Canadians’ own good.
While the new rules may initially slow the economy, some say they’ll help improve the nancial health of households over the long run. But they will also have ripple e ects on many pockets of Canadian business including home builders, real estate agents, renova-tion industry and re-tailers.
So what is the mor-
al of the story? In a-tion is real. Interest rates will rise. Live within your means. And, don’t bite o more than you can chew. Perhaps we can avoid the repeat of the nancial asco of the 1980s, which de-stroyed the hopes and dreams of so many Canadians.

Showing your loved ones that you care by making a charitable gi in their name resonates with the true holiday spirit of giving. It also en-sures your gi s won’t be returned, le un-used, or re-gi ed. But with so many op-tions to choose from, where do you start your search for the right charity?
Check to see if your charity of choice is registered.
A good rst step in choosing your charity is to visit the Canada Revenue Agency’s website (www.cra.gc.ca). Here you can check if the organi-zation you are inter-ested in is registered
under the Income Tax Act, meaning it is a recognized Canadian charity.
Where (in the world) will your money go?
Would you like to help people in the developing world, or would you prefer to support programs in Canada? Decide where you’d like your impact to be made -- abroad or at home -- and nd out where your charity of inter-est works.
Some charities simply o er a card to recognize your gi , while others o er ex-tras like calendars or toys. Consider where your donation is go-ing. Is it paying for the extras, or is most of it being used for the work the charity
does? It’s nice to be able to o er an extra with your thought-ful gi , but consider whether its cost re-duces the impact of your charitable gi . If you aren’t getting a full tax receipt, not all of your money is going straight to the cause. If the extra is optional, consider saying, “No, thanks.”
Review Money-Sense’s Charity 100
Every year, Mon-eySense magazine reviews Canada’s top 100 charities and grades them on their e ciency, transpar-ency, and gover-nance policies (www.moneysense.ca/the-2012-charity-100/). Sorted by sector (en-vironment, health, in-ternational aid, etc.), the Charity 100 pro-
vides a helpful over-view to get started with charitable gi giving. Choose your sector and nd out which charity will spend your money most e ectively.
 is holiday, choose conservation.
For the third year in a row, the Na-ture Conservancy of Canada (NCC) was the top-ranking envi-ronmental charity in Canada, receiving a grade of A+. At NCC, 85 cents of every dol-lar raised goes direct-ly to on-the-ground land conservation in Canada.
It’s easy to give a meaningful gi this holiday season:

Rossland briefs
It’s that time of year to once again make your sacri ce to the snow gods. e Spirit of Red will be having a Snow Dance in Ross-land Saturday, Dec. 1.
e dance starts at 9 p.m. at the Miners’ Hall in Rossland.
We are proud to be featuring the vocals of Karli Harrison backed by the legendary band, No Excuse!
Tickets are $20 per person, available at the Mountain Town Properties o ce (2020 Washington Street in the Bank of Montreal building) or from members of the Spirit of Red Social Club Society. All proceeds go to the nal costs
associated with the Olaus Jeldness statue and hopefully raising a little money towards future Spirit of Red events.
Ski group growing
Black Jack Ski Club is still gaining mem-bers for the upcoming season, with 523 now signed up.
e nal Early Bird draw is on Dec. 1 and
includes an adult sea-son pass at Red Re-sort, a day of Big Red Cat Skiing, a night at Fairmont Waterfront Park in Vancouver and a night at the Prestige Lakeside Re-sort in Nelson.
For the 2012/2013 season, Black Jack will operate under a bud-get comparable to pre-vious years, but will be boozing the budget by adding about 20 volunteer hours per week.
at will be split between grooming the trails and equipment maintenance.
For more informa-tion on the club or how to sign up, go to www.skiblackjack.ca.
Black Jack Ski Club is a non-pro t club.

The Kootenay Midget Wildcats hockey team has what it needs in terms of shooting, checking and goaltending, that’s what has earned it the rare opportunity to attend one of the best hockey tournaments in the country next month. Hard cash is now needed to finance the return trip.
The Wildcats have been invited to the Mandi Schwartz Me-morial tournament at the Athol Mur-ray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask. from Dec. 6-9. The tournament is reserved for the most elite female midget teams in Canada and
it is the first such invi-tation for a West Koo-tenay team.
The tournament is attended by scouts from across North America looking to recruit players to NCAA and Canadian colleges. Participation can make a big dif-ference in the lives of these young women, by opening the possi-
bility to further their hockey and education through scholarships.
Organizers estimate expenses to be close to $20,000 and the team has partnered with the No Frills store to sell merchant cards to help raise money.
The Wildcats are made up of players from across the Koo-tenays, and compete
in the Provincial Fe-male Major Midget AAA League, where they are currently in third place. They played a pair of games against the Thomp-son-Okanagan Rock-ets in Nakusp this past weekend.
To support the Wildcats contact manager Curtis Biggs at 357-9373.

Strong bonds are formed when friends share experiences, and when those events happen to oc-cur on a regular basis the links grow even stronger.
For a group of bird hunting buddies, many from here in the West Kootenays, the trip to a favourite area near the town of Taber, Alberta has long been something to look forward to. Such is the appeal of the get-away that one member of the unof- cial club made the annual drive all the way from Quebec.
e hunters have been a xture in the prairie location (about 30 km east of Lethbridge) each year since 1970, and Castlegar’s John Torbic, is a charter member of the party.
As colleagues have
passed away over the years their memo-ries have been pre-served at the hunt-ing grounds by their surviving comrades. Tributes to four de-parted marksmen stand solemnly by. Ashes of their late friends have been spread on the land
they were so fond of visiting.
 e list of those whom have gone on includes Gar- eld Nolan, age 42 of Trail in 1982; Jack Wallington, also of Trail, age 61; Glenn Martin, age 67; the man from Quebec mentioned above;
and the most recent hunter to be so hon-oured, four years ago – Bill Wade, 70, of Nelson.
Torbic, along with Montrose resident Glenn Smecher and Castlegar resident Dick Wiggen was on the scene this year and took the oppor-
tunity to take part in a gesture of tribute to the four amigos – the placing of owers near the memorials along with a ceremo-nial swig from a bot-tle of beer or vodka to mark the occasion in a way they feel their buddies would appreciate.
Mr. Torbic told the West Kootenay Advertiser he’s been an avid hunter for as long as he can re-member, and that he’s been to the southern prairie for the annual two-week excursion in each of the past 42 years, with the exception of a period of a few years back in the 80s, a time when he had work commitments abroad.
Torbic says he knows his ashes will one day join those of the others and he’s okay with joining “great people” and “good memories.”

...have done any-thing different,” he said.
“All that informa-tion will come out at a later date.”
On Nov. 14, pas-sengers were in the middle of deplaning at the Trail airport, when a person turned around and saw what he thought was fire and alerted the staff.
Fire retardant was deployed by the pi-lots although Pacific Coastal officials said there was never any fire.
Smith said what can happen during the shut down of a plane is that extra fuel can build up in the exhaust pipe and the excess that is shot out appears as flame.

Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in the ground throughout the world. Most homes that are in contact with the ground will contain some amount of ra-don gas. Radon be-comes more of a con-cern when it reaches high levels. Radon levels vary across the country. According to Health Canada about seven per cent of Ca-nadian homes have radon levels that may be putting residents at risk. Here in the B.C. Interior we have some “hot spot” areas with high radon levels in approximately 40 per cent of homes.
Radon accumulates in low lying areas like basements. Radon in combination with to-bacco smoke can in-crease the risk substan-tially. Health Canada estimates that one in three smokers exposed to high radon levels will develop lung can-cer.
Radon gas is colour-less, odourless and tasteless, so the only way to know if the radon levels in your home are high is to conduct testing. The
best time to test is now through April. Dur-ing the cooler months windows and doors are often closed and rising warm air in a home draws more radon from the ground.
Testing is easy and cheap, it involves plac-ing a small puck-like
kit within the lowest area of the home that could be occupied for more than four hours per day. The kit should remain in that loca-tion for a minimum of
three months and then mailed to a laboratory for results.
Essentially, radon takes the path of least resistance, and resis-tance can vary between
homes. Radon can en-ter a home through the foundation, including concrete, and more so through cracks in a foundation or dirt floor such as older crawl
spaces. It can also en-ter a home through the ventilation system.
The bottom line is that everyone should test their homes for radon to see if this gas (dubbed as the “silent killer”) is lurking. If el-evated radon levels are found, basic measures
can be taken to address the problem.
Test kits are avail-able from BC Lung As-sociation. Give them a call at 1-800-665-LUNG (5864).

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)An expansive and exciting cycle has begun, both within and without. Externally, you may be dealing with a busier than average schedule these days. Inwardly, many deep thoughts are running through your mind. Research, web searches and/or investigations of other kinds are featured. These are activating your passions and ambitions.
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)Rich, deep and passionate exchanges with signifi cant others are a central theme these days. Sharing secrets and desires adds to the intimacy and perhaps the drama. Mergers and a deepening of commitments are part of the plot. These are activating courage and determination to assert yourself to realize a brighter future.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Circumstances are pushing you to take stock of your health and that of your overall lifestyle. Your fi nancial health is probably in the mix. Giving more somehow is required. Gaining access to the right tools, techniques, methods and/or measures is important. This is a call to be extra sober and take your situation seriously. Yet avoid worry and remain calm as you follow through.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Bringing attention to needed changes in your daily rhythm and routine is the call now. You would like to feel more confi dent about things, but it may not feel so easy. Stepping up your efforts and level of discipline may feel necessary. It is said there are two main categories of emotion: love and fear. Focus on love to feel more secure, decrease stress and increase health.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Much is stirring within and this may be activating some of your fears. Yet, a new wave of creativity and enthusiasm is coming in. This is leading you to reach out and meet new people. These new connections stand to open doors you did not previously even know existed. Nurture these budding friendships with sincerity and full diplomacy.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)Taking inventory of all that you have to offer and making lists of all that you want to have and achieve is an important focus. This trend will continue for the next few weeks. This clarity will activate your intuitions and open new doors, as if magically. Yet just think-ing about it is not enough. Commit your ideas to written words and/or images for best results.
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)A break in the storm likely comes as a great relief. The past several weeks may have been pretty tough. Although a longer cycle requiring that you ‘pay your dues’ somehow will continue, at least a period of reprieve has begun and will unfold until year’s end anyway. Use this opening to reach out to make meaningful connections and increase your confi dences.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)The past few weeks have seen you take a much more assertive approach that you probably have for some time. With this momentum you are now in a process of building upon new foundations. Deciphering what is important and wise and how to best nurture a healthy approach and still achieve effective outcomes is your next major step.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)While much is giving way and changing within, you are also feeling inspired to take some key initiatives without. With your ambitions on the rise to create a whole new foundation in your life, now is the time to focus and persevere. How things used to be is dissolving steadily now and your overall lifestyle is implied. Embrace the darkness to discern what is important.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)While paying attention to the facts can be important and valuable getting lost in the details can be a problem. Too much thinking and not enough awareness is the issue – losing sight of the forest for the trees. This is a good time to step back, broaden your scope and release the tensions built up by having too much on your mind.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)Freedom is a state most people desire. Yet, it is more seldom appreciated that freedom cannot be realized without discipline. This is an important lesson for you now. Discipline implies a clear focus, realistic strategy and consistent follow through. Along the way resistance and/or blocks are encountered. Sometimes these come from within and must be overcome, like now.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)The time has come to make your presence known. Your willingness and determination to be seen and heard will produce positive results. In order to build your confi dences you will have to give more, to make extra efforts than usual. Deciphering how to break through lines of resistance or simple lack of recognition is the greater, long-term task.

Horoscope for the Week November 30, 2012Horoscope for theTip of the Week: 12-21-2012 may seem like an old story to some, yet here it is, on our doorstep. This key date is in direct alignment with Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere. In some respects it is a symbolic date. Despite the many calendars in Mayan Cosmology, it is said there are 17 main calendars, with the 5125 year Long Count Calendar being the longest, aside from the 25, 625 Precessional Cycle itself, it is the small yet ever so signifi cant cycle of the Sun that marks the offi cial end and beginning date of the new cycle, of which so many have spoken and written about over the past 25 years especially. The world view or cosmology of the Classical Maya reveals a deep sense of oneness. The modern notion that we are ‘in the world’ is contrary to this more holistic perception of most advanced ancestral cultures. That all of existence is intrinsically and intimately connected was a given to the ancient Mayans as well and the elders of that culture who have maintained a close adherence to the past continue to perceive that way. Now even modern physics is proving that division and separation are relative illusions. So, 12-21-2012 may be best understood as a symbolic date that represents the rebirth of a mode of consciousness that will in time make our current collective modes of perception, where linear facts dominate, appear primitive. The impoverished notion that ‘there is only one God’ is steadily being replaced with the higher realization that ‘all of creation is one’. This is the more spiritual meaning of 12-21-2012 and it represents an opportune time to gather to celebrate this important feature of our collective evolution in consciousness.
