Arts/CultureLocal authors helping authors

Two Rossland au-thors are looking to help others along the road to getting pub-lished. Starting in March, Darcy O’Hearn and Yolanda Ridge are hoping to put on a series of courses that will highlight the two routes they took to get published.

At the moment only one is planned for March 1 in Rossland, but if there is enough interest they would bring the course to other areas in the Kootenays.

Both O’Hearn and Ridge wrote children’s books, but chose dif-ferent paths to get published.

O’Hearn self-pub-lished her fi rst book, Leonard the Larch, while Ridge went the more conventional way of the tradition-al publisher for her book, Trouble in the Trees.

“It’s just such a dif-

ferent experience,” Ridge said, adding that together they have two pieces of the puzzle on ways to get published.

O’Hearn said that, initially, she wanted to go the traditional route, but aft er hav-ing the publisher’s requested changes for her story laid out, she decided it wasn’t for her. Th e problem was the publisher’s wanted too many changes that she felt began to compromise the tone of her own writing.

Self-publishing al-lowed her to maintain control of the story and also to choose her own illustrator.

For Ridge, the tra-ditional publisher was a guiding hand to es-tablishing herself as an author and helped to take some of the burdens of writing a book off her back.

“I could not have self-published because I would be no good at marketing,” she said.

Together the two can talk about the

diff erent sides of the publishing world and help those seeking to get their own writing published to decide which direction suits them.

“It’s surprising the number of people that want to write books and have always want-ed to write books, but don’t know where to start,” O’Hearn said. “So this course is to get people motivated.”

She added it is not just children’s writers, but anybody looking to get published, as many of the challeng-es are the same.

Th e course is from 7 - 9 p.m. on March 1 at Rouge Gallery Fram-ing, in the basement of the BMO building in Rossland. O’Hearn said that if there is more interest in other parts of the Kootenays then they would be willing to travel to do the course.

To get more info on the seminars contact O’Hearn at [email protected] or 250-362-5559.

This bottle, from druggist William Rutherford, brought in big money on a recent eBay auction.

Part of an ongoing look at items of local interest appearing on eBay.

A postcard of a baseball team at Co-maplix postmarked Aug. 12, 1909 sold recently for $113.50 US.

Comaplix was a sawmilling town on the Beaton Arm of Upper Arrow Lake that burned in 1914. What remained was

inundated in the 1960s following con-struction of the High Arrow dam.

Th e message on the back, addressed to John Emmerson of Edmundston, New Brunswick, reads: “What do you know about this? Better run an excursion out here and give us a chance to clean up up. Why don’t you write. D.A.C.”

Th e auction at-tracted six bids, with a starting price of $75.

Th e seller was in Port Perry, Ontario.

Th e Arrow Lakes Historical Society has a diff erent pic-ture of the same ball club from about the same time, which can be seen online at the Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit From the Bow of the Minto.

stacle for teams from both Arrowhead and Comaplix.

“Matched against teams from Nakusp and Revelstoke, Co-maplix fared well win-ning their share of the contests, showing class in both ability and ap-pearance,” he says.

• A small druggist’s bottle embossed “Wil-liam Rutherford / Nel-son B.C.” inexplicably

drew 17 bids and sold for $223 US recently.

True, the light blue aqua bottle was in ex-cellent condition and very attractive, but the last time a similar bot-tle popped up, in 2005, it went for $37.

Th e seller was in Grand Forks.

• An update on the leather-covered bottle we told you about last week, discovered in Nelson’s St. Saviour’s Anglican Church hall

and now being auc-tioned as a fundraiser.

While there were no bids as of Monday

morning, since the sto-ry appeared, Ron Fraser told us how it ended up in the church’s hands.

In 1965, while liv-ing in Grand Forks and working as a line-man on the railway, he collected bottles from old camps along the tracks.

“A neighbour of ours said his girlfriend had an old bottle,” he says. “Her name was Johnson and she was a teacher in Grand Forks.

She gave it to me.”However, the bottle

in question — the one now up for sale — wasn’t the sort Fraser collected, so he gave it to the church in 1975 or ‘76 aft er moving to Nelson.

He believes the woman got the bottle through her family, but doesn’t know where she was originally from.

For more photos of the above items, see nelsonstar.com.

NewsAtamanenko slams Old Age Security reviewANDREW SCHAFERAdvertiser Reporter

Th e BC Southern Interior MP is pub-licly calling on people to oppose the Conser-vative government’s move to review and make changes to the

Old Age Security pen-sion this year.

Alex Atamanenko is asking people to come to the aid of the Offi cial Opposition as they try and derail the Conservatives, whose surprise plan includes a proposal to raise the

age a person can start to collect Old Age Se-curity (OAS) from 65 to 67.

He said it was dif-fi cult in Parliament to debate or stop OAS changes because the combined opposition cannot out vote the majority Conserva-tives.

“It’s really impor-

tant for people’s voices to be heard,” he said. “I think the prime minister is playing with seniors’ liveli-hoods here, he needs to know that. People need to let the prime minister know what their thoughts are.”

Th e government claims that the present system is becoming

unsustainable because of the aging demo-graphics of Canadi-ans, said Atamanen-ko. Th e government says that OAS will cost $108 billion by 2030, up from $36.5 billion today.

However, pension policy analysts who prepared reports for the government felt Canada’s public pen-sion system does not face major fi nancial sustainability chal-lenges, Atamanenko claimed. As well, crit-ics say Harper is ig-noring an important fact that the economy will also grow over the next 20 years.

“And if there isn’t enough cash the gov-ernment should top it up,” he said.

Atamanenko said people have been call-ing and writing his riding offi ces with their concerns about these changes.

“When you’ve made plans for your retire-ment and have already lost a pile of money from other savings be-ing hit hard, it seems like the prime min-ister is hitting them again,” Atamanenko said.

Atamanenko will be in Nelson this Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. at Self De-sign High on Victo-ria Street to speak about his department of peace legislation, introduced late last year.

NewsExtra Foods checking out for No Frills store

Trail briefs

Th e arrival of a No Frills grocery store is a packaged deal for Trail which will result in the closure of Extra Foods.

Th e store, located at Waneta Plaza, will convert to Loblaw’s No Frills banner soon but details on when this will take place have yet to be confi rmed, according to Craig Ware, Western Cana-da’s corporate aff airs director for Loblaws Companies Limited.

Th e company is still working out details on switching to the new franchise operation and is following a con-version process that was negotiated with the union and ratifi ed by employees, which includes an agreement to off er positions to all current Extra Foods’ employees.

Trail council look-ing at its breed-spe-cifi c legislation

Trail council has bit into suggested changes to the city’s animal control bylaw that moves away from breed-specifi c legisla-tion.

But further discus-sion at Monday night’s meeting only high-lighted the need to do more research on improving the piece enacted in 1999.

Th e current city by-law not only lumps a Pitbull Terrier into its vicious dog category but charges owners

$300 to license this breed while other dogs – deemed vicious or not – cost $25 with a veterinarian certifi -cate noting the animal has been neutered or $100 if it hasn’t.

In compliance with the BC SPCA’s model, staff suggested it would be more appropriate to remove pitbulls from the city’s vicious dog defi nition and target animals deemed vi-cious with the $300 increased fee.

SPCA makes plea to stop break-in spree

Th e Trail SPCA is looking for a break on a rash of break-ins that have plagued the

shelter in the last few months.

Last week the shel-ter’s food bank — an outdoor shed housing pet food donations from the public — was ravaged, with would-be thieves breaking the lock on the door.

Although the per-son who attempted the break-in ran off without taking any-thing when the alarm system was sounded, the incident is the fourth in the last six months at the shel-ter, said Trail SPCA branch manager Dan-ielle Jackman.

RDCK ELECTION BILL IN

Democracy doesn’t come cheap.

It cost over $63,300 to hold the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s elections last fall, which saw races in seven out of 11 electoral areas.

Th at was the total amount spent on ad-vertising, hall rentals, printing ballots, and election offi cials’ sti-pends, according to chief elections offi cer Randy Matheson.

Partnering with school district elec-tions where appli-cable reduced the re-gional district’s share to about $52,700.

Matheson esti-mates it will cost about $81,000 in 2014 if elections are held in every electoral area. Th e regional district will set aside $27,000 for each of the next three years to meet the projected costs — up from the present bud-get of $25,000.

Th e Regional Dis-trict of Central Koote-nay wants a say in the future of BC Hydro’s Fish and Wildlife

Compensation Pro-gram.

Although the board has already con-demned the pending closure of the pro-gram’s Nelson offi ce, it passed another mo-tion Th ursday asking for greater input in developing the new delivery model.

“I would like us to be a player in the recommendation,” Nelson mayor John Dooley said. “We need to be much more forceful in our mes-sage to government. Th is program is too important to us.”

Th e Nelson offi ce is expected to close March 31. Th e seven full-time staff —con-sisting of fi ve biolo-gists, one GIS techni-cian, and one clerical position — will be displaced or laid off .

One person has already left while another has taken a position with BC Hydro in Vancouver. A full-time position in Cranbrook is also aff ected.

BC Hydro says it will continue to spend $3.1 million on habi-tat restoration in the Columbia region, as required by its water license, but plans to lean more heavily on community groups to carry out the work.

Arts/CultureFestival to highlight skiing

Outdoor enthusi-asts will have a chance to see some of the year’s best backcoun-try fi lms in Rossland next weekend. Th e Backcountry Film Festival, put on by the Friends of the Ross-land Range will be held on Feb. 26 and feature some local and international fi lms.

Sheree Sonfi eld, an organizer of the fes-tival, said the event features a number of area fi lms.

Kokanee Glacier Adventure 2011, was made by Rossland families the Robines and the Moshers.

“It’s really sweet, it’s very endearing,” she said. “It’s eight minutes and it’s from the eyes and the view-points of two 12-year-olds in Kokanee Gla-

cier.”Sonfi eld said the

other end of the spec-trum is Ski Bums Never Die, which is a short fi lm about some 75-year-olds who still backcountry ski in the Whitewater area.

“It’s the other end of the spectrum; enjoy-ing the backcountry and all it has to off er in a non-motorized way,” she said.

Th e event is family friendly, with no alco-hol served, and set up to facilitate younger viewers as well, with shorter fi lms at the beginning and longer ones at the end.

“We put the shorter fi lms before the in-termission, which is usually an hour and a half in,” she said. “So again, that’s support-ing all-ages, because younger kids some-times have to be home a little earlier.”

Th e longer movies: Th e Winters of my Life, Th e Berber Turns and the short version of Solitaire are aft er the intermission.

Refreshments will be served by donation at the intermission and will be run by the Rossland Rotary Interactors, a high-school rotary pro-gram.

Th e Interactors do things around town, from delivering phonebooks to doing coat checks.

Th ey then use the money they earn to do charity work.

Tickets are on sale in Rossland at Butch Boudry and are $5. Sonfi eld says they tend to sell out quick-ly.

Th e festival starts at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Miners’ Hall in Rossland.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Whether by retreat, meditation or some kind of escape you yearn for some time out. You may want to get things done, to improve,

repair and renovate somehow yet it may be that you need to rest. With spring just around the corner, you can perhaps afford to put

those things off for now. You can list your goals and plan your strategy but consider the importance or recharging your energy levels.

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)Tuning in to your dreams and ideals continues. In as much as these suffi ciently include others you will be successful.

If only your own interests, ambitions and security needs are on your mind, you will soon be reminded how much that

will not suffi ce. This is an expansive time for you yet inclusiveness is the essential ingredient for success now.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)A central feature of your destiny is to make deliberate and effectual use of your imagination. Yet be careful of over imagination

which implies worry, suspicion and conjuring negative, fear-based scenarios of the future. Positive applications include

creative visualization and composition or active empathy and compassion or ideas generation and brainstorming….

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Opening your heart and mind to receive guidance and instruction is your current task. These may come as intuitions,

dreams, eureka’s or synchronicities that show you the signs. Acquiring new tools and skills is likely. You may even yearn

for a new job or home. Knowing what you do and do not want, but especially what you do want is part of the process.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Do you feel like you are in your own way these days? If so, how can you get out of it? The fi rst step is to decipher

if some of your usual patterns of approach or attitudes are not working. Next, brainstorm for alternatives. Your

ambitions may be larger than your energy levels as well so aim for a balance. Give yourself more time to complete

tasks and achieve your goals, for the next 2-3 months!

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)The urge to merge and connect with signifi cant others is now in focus. Sharing ideals, ambitions, goals and quality time

is featured. Desires to improve your overall mode of expression, is in the mix. Many new realizations and insights are

brewing in your awareness and the time has come to refi ne your attitude and focus to embrace and integrate them.

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)Tuning-in to embrace a more wholesome lifestyle continues. In the wake of signifi cant changes on relationship fronts over the past

18 moths or so you are ready for a fresh start. Directing a growing determination towards assertive achievement verses aggressive

reaction is a current challenge. Thank, forgive and release the challenging people and experiences that are now behind you.

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)Achieving your creative goals continues. Taking key initiatives is ever important to get the ball rolling. Who are you going to call?

Sometimes simple and subtle changes in our usual routine can make a big difference. You may have a list of goals in this regard

and if so, list them. Amidst a busier social cycle you may have to manage your time better to succeed on both fronts.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)Outwardly, you may express a practical and realistic approach, yet inwardly you are a true dreamer and mystic and perhaps

something of an escape artist as well. This inner aspect of your nature is being stimulated now. Exploring new territory within and

without is implied. You may not feel as confi dent as you like and this cycle will continue. For now, focus on your quiet center.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)Big dreams are formulating in your mind. The time is right to allow them to become more vivid before you take direct action.

Making key creative investments is implied. With some noticeable shifts close to home you are determined to keep the peace.

The ‘think twice or three times before you speak or act’ principle is highlighted. Relax and be open to your intuitive guidance.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)Getting clear on your priorities is a central theme now. That these include practical wisdom, realistic dreams and empowering

skills are core features of your overall destiny. Reviewing your options and clarifying your intentions will bring peace of mind

now. The more connected you are to your spirit’s call the more confi dent you will feel.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)The time has come to take some key initiatives or at least to tune-in to know what they are. You may have to

choose between a variety of possibilities; a harder task than usual these days. Once you are clear the task of

refi ning and improving will prove important. Once you get going with this creative process you will enjoy it and your

confi dences will rise, so begin it now!

TIP OF THE WEEK: The New

Moon on February 21st was special

because it includes Neptune. Just 2

degrees apart from the Sun and Moon, Neptune

is contributing to a rare and special triple aspect. The last time Neptune was in

Pisces was in 1848 and it synchronized with the re-surfacing of the Western mystical spiritual traditions that were forced underground

by the church and by the march of empirical science a couple of centuries previously. Neptune’s current transit through Pisces is the next rung in

the spiral for the global spiritual re-awakening that is already underway. Material science has given us a lot, yet it has also cost dearly. Unless humanity

acknowledges and embraces the spiritual realities of existence which includes an understanding of life’s and our own multi-dimensionality, acknowledgment

of the existence of and appreciation of the evolution of the soul, karmic law, reincarnation, celebration of our essential unity as a species and compassion… our

materialistic attitudes and military backed ambitions facilitated by our scientifi c prowess stands to be our undoing.
