Last Sunday, Ross-lander Trevor Camp-bell released his back-country maps to the public. Campbell was at hand at Cafe Books West in Rossland to talk about the mak-ing of the maps.
Th ere is a lot of excitement about the maps as Camp-bell estimated he had sold 60 maps at Cafe Books already, the majority being the Rossland Range map, which he said makes sense in Rossland.
Th e two separate maps cover a large expanse of territory. Campbell spent over eight years making them and each map shows in great detail the regions of the Rossland Range and the Kootenay Pass.
Each map is two sided; one side is a
1:25,000 topographic map, the other shows photographs of the best winter ascension routes up the various mountains.
At 1:25,000 resolu-tion, Campbell said his maps are twice the resolution of
similar government maps. Th e maps also include a route de-scription and ava-lanche terrain expo-sure scale rating.
“Th ese are specifi c to backcountry ski-ing,” Campbell said. “So they have all that
sort of information that you wouldn’t in-clude on an ordinary map, they’re a spe-cifi c use map.”
Campbell moved to Rossland a little over a year ago from Salmo where he’d lived since 2000. He
originally began col-lecting the informa-tion for personal use and to be able to plan his next trips more easily. As his library of information and photos grew, he de-cided to take the map making more seri-ously and pursue it on a professional level.
Th e fi rst map took eight years to survey and complete, though Campbell said he did also complete two degrees in that time. Th e second map was much quicker, with surveying tak-ing three weeks and layout another few months.
Th e maps retail for $16.95 each and will be sold at a number of retailers around Rossland, as well as Nelson and Creston.
Th ey are also avail-able on his website mightybighornmaps.com.

Library looking to expand
Situated off of 5th Street, the Grand Forks and District Public Library has been at its current location for three de-cades. Conceived in 1945, the library has served the commu-nity for many years and is now looking to expand its prem-ises. Library Director Heather Buzzell stat-ed the proposal is still in the early stages but the library is looking to renovate.
“What we’d like is a bit more space, es-pecially for the staff working area,” said Buzzell.
Greason - Grand Forks’ hidden gem
Craft ed with me-ticulous details, Wal-ter Greason’s wooden carvings are brought to life with precise ac-curacy.
From the delicately pointed ears of a rab-bit, to the individual strands of hair on a bear’s back, Greason gently chisels and scores for hours on end. It was in 1958 when he fi rst picked up a stump of wood and began his fi rst carving.
Christmas dinner Starts at 12 noon
on Christmas day, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. at the Gos-pel Chapel at 7048 Donaldson Drive. Th e event is hosted entire-ly by volunteers.

Art/Nature
Local wildlife art-ist Guy Hobbs has recently received an interesting and chal-lenging commission. A European collector has requested a series of portraits of extinct (or considered ex-tinct) birds. Th e series is to commence with three North American species including the Ivory Billed Wood-
pecker, the Passenger Pigeon and Carolina Parakeet.
“Th is is a great project from a great client - they are so en-gaged with the subject and have actual speci-mens of these birds in their collection. Th is is quite a test,” said Hobbs.
“I specialize in por-traying live subjects, usually from my own photographs. Whilst there is a wealth of
reference for these birds, preserved spec-imens lack that essen-tial spark of life. Th e challenge for me is to put that back.”
Hobbs, however, thinks there is value in this project.
“If people can ap-preciate the beauty of these birds which we (may) have lost for-ever, then hopefully it will inspire them to value those that re-main even more. Th is
is the basis for envi-ronmental awareness and protection.”
Given that one spe-cies (the Ivory Billed Woodpecker) is con-sidered by some to still exist in isolated pockets in its Loui-siana homeland, and critical wilderness habitat has been pro-tected specifi cally to protect any hidden survivors – this kind of awareness-raising can only be a good
thing in Hobbs’ opin-ion.
“It is a real plea-sure for me when I can produce work that not only pleases me and my clients aesthetically, but may also help to protect the wildlife I value so highly.”
Hobbs, who works in pencil and has be-come recognized for his highly-detailed images of birds and mammals says the

commission came about as a direct re-sult of the launch of his updated website www.guyhobbs.com. Th e new client was the result of a series of ‘shares’ on Facebook.
“Th e internet is an invaluable marketing tool for artists,” says Hobbs.
“How else could a Castlegar artist con-nect with a global market?”

City targets wheel park funding
Trail’s decision to go aft er grant funding for a skate park shows commitment to the overdue project, ac-cording to the Colum-bia Youth Community Development Centre (YCDC). But from the city’s perspective, the wheel park is the right choice for the grant application that requires projects to be complete by 2015. Th e city has applied for up to $400,000 from the Community Recreation Program Provincial grant, aft er carefully weighing its options between the
planned wheel park and the potential pe-destrian bridge.
RLOP Endures Th e show will go
on for the Rossland Light Opera Players despite losing $3,300. Th e theatre company had its cash box stolen during an early No-vember show, casting doubt on their main stage show, Pride andPrejudice, in late Feb-ruary, early March. Although they made aplea to the thief to return the money “no questions asked.”nothing has turned up, said the compa-ny’s president, Dawn Graham.

Regional/Federal
Over 80 per cent of plastic water bottles at federal institu-tions are being sent to landfi lls aft er their use and they should be banned, says the region’s Member of Parliament.
Alex Atamanenko, MP for BC Southern Interior, said the fed-eral government has
purchased millions of dollars worth of bottled water over the last 10 years, despite there being potable water supplied by res-ident municipalities.
Only 20 per cent of the bottles are be-ing recycled, he said, a fact which he intro-duced into the House of Commons last week.
“A good portion is being sent to poorer
countries where the products were never
consumed,” he said. “Aft er the costs there are the harmful en-vironmental implica-tions to be consid-ered.”
Atamanenko also introduced a petition on behalf of the BC/Yukon Region Cana-dian Catholic Devel-opment and Peace or-ganization, signed by 1,200 people from the dioceses of Nelson & Victoria.
Th e petition calls on the government to ban the purchase of
bottled water in fed-eral institutions wher-ever potable water is available. He pointed to the example set by the province of Nova Scotia where bot-tled water has been banned in their gov-ernment buildings.
Th e petition is part of a larger movement. Barry Nelson, region-al development and peace organizer of the local petition, said
the “No To Bottled Water” country-wide campaign saw people in the tens of thou-sands agree to not use bottled water when potable water is avail-able.
“Th is should show the Federal Govern-ment that it is time to join the rest of us and reduce their use of bottled water as well,” said Nelson in a press release.

Historical Commerce
Part of an ongoing look at items of lo-cal interest selling on eBay.
A stoneware fl our cup manufactured by Medalta Pottery of Medicine Hat adver-tising Ogilvie’s Royal Household Flour and Agnew & Company of Rossland sold last week for $302 US.
Dating from the 1920s or ‘30s, it had no cracks or chips and drew seven bids, all of at least $146. An identical cup, howev-er, with several chips on the rim and a few hairline cracks on the back failed to sell on the same day for the opening price of $135 Cdn.
Medalta items typi-cally draw high prices, provided they are in good condition.
Another example of the same cup sold last January for $400 Cdn, while the record price was $433 US in Janu-ary of last year.
Th e all-time high
for a Medalta item from this area was a Sandon fl our pitcher, which sold in 2008 for $1,136 US. A pitcher from Silverton also went for $617 in 2009, a cup from Appledale fetched $272 last March, another from Greenwood $260 last year, and a cup from Harrop $127 in 2001.
Crocks from Trail
went for $150 in 2005, $202.50 in 2006, $640 in 2008, $300 in 2009, and $107.50 last year.
• A very nice 1897 stock certifi cate from the Boundary Creek Mining and Milling Co. of Greenwood City (as Greenwood was known before it actually became a city) sold for $111 US last week. Th e cer-
tifi cate was for 1,000 shares, issued to one W.W. Gibbs.
According to the Williams directory of BC mining companies for 1900-01, this outfi t was founded in 1896 with a capital of $1.5 million. Its executive consisted of D.A. Hol-brook, president; Hec-tor McRae, managing director; and J.W. Nel-
son, secretary-trea-surer. Other directors were C.A.E. Shaw and D.W. Holbrook.
Th e signatures on the stock, however, show the then-pres-ident as a G.A. Ren-dall, and the secretary as possibly G.W.H. Samson.
Th e company had 14 claims in the Dead-wood camp, near the junction of Eholt and Boundary creeks. One of them, the Gold Bug, showed gold, sil-ver, lead, and copper deposits.
Th e auction drew four bids. Th e seller was in Portland.
• Another bottle from the Slocan Bot-tling Works of Kaslo sold for $115 Cdn, despite a chip on its lip. Th e seller was in Procter, the buyer in Nelson.
It’s the fourth bot-tle produced by that company to turn up this year. Th e others went for $160, $179, and $866 — the latter a rare variation with three spelling mis-takes.
A tale of two measuring cups
Chipped lip of this cup drastically decreases its appeal, and value.Pictured below, a Greenwood stock certifi cate, circa the turn of the last century.

While it’s not un-usual to see Christ-mas lights at this time of year, residents of a Grand Forks street have put their own spin on that tradition.
Boyd and Isla Fos-ter and Wayne and Susan Routley began co-ordinating when to put up lights on their 18th Street resi-dences well over a de-cade ago and many of their neighbours have followed suit.
What the residents do on the fi rst Satur-day in December is go
from house to house turning on their lights one by one and it all culminates with a get-together at the Foster household
“We started about 15 years ago, just the four of us, and then with neighbours (that have moved away) and it was six, then eight and now we have 30 people light-ing up their houses,” explains Boyd Foster, adding that residents on the street aren’t obligated to decorate their houses.
“We start out when it’s dark and go down the street, nobody has
lit up their houses yet. It’s the fi rst time the street’s lit up,” Foster says – a domino eff ect of Christmas lights.
Unlike the Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick holiday movie Deck the Halls, the Fosters, Routleys and other residents aren’t trying to out-do each other’s displays.
While Foster says he tries to add to his display every year, he says it isn’t a competi-tion but he does say there is a lot of orga-nizing that goes into the light displays.
“We’re coordinat-ing all the time. We
phone and say, ‘Okay, get your lights ready,’ and then everybody talks,” says Foster.
“Th e wives talk and say, ‘What do we need?’ What are we going to bring food-wise?’
For Isla Foster the lighting up of 18th Street is the begin-ning of the holiday season.
“It starts the season in our neighbour-hood,” she says.
“We all get together and the season starts that fi rst weekend in December. It’s a good get-together for the neighbourhood.”

A local sister duo is working to make a diff erence through a new charity that draws support not by creat-ing guilt, but through celebrations aiming to inspire hope.
Th e Latitude Proj-ect, founded earlier this year by Alanna and Jenn Tynan, is a non-profi t organiza-tion whose goal is to better rural communi-ties in Latin America.
“One of the prem-ises of the foundation is to focus on taking a brighter approach to [charity],” said Al-anna.
“Our fundraising events are generally based around cele-brating our lives.”
As such, Th e Lati-tude Project puts on events like tourna-ments, dances, art shows and concerts, not only in Nelson but in the Vancouver area as well to raise funds for their cause.
“It goes along the same lines as not wanting to make peo-ple feel bad and sad because in our experi-ence that makes peo-ple do nothing,” said Alanna.
“I think that the av-enue of making peo-ple feel guilty makes them feel hopeless
and uninspired, and when you feel unin-spired you think that there’s nothing you can do and so you do nothing.”
So far, Th e Latitude Project has already built a school in Nica-ragua, but this winter they plan on going back to help repair and build roofs in rural ar-eas, and the Raise the Roof event is one way to help out.
On December 30, local band Yardsale and DJ Ryan Wells will do a benefi t at the Spirit Bar to help the cause. Tickets are available at the Hume Hotel and all proceeds go to their project in Nicaragua.
“We’re just trying to show that char-ity doesn’t have to showcase so much desperation, there’s also so much vibrancy and fortitude in these communities despite the adversity,” she said.
“Instead of making people feel guilty… we want to make people feel inspired, excited about engag-ing the world around them. While they’re learning about these things and increas-ing their awareness of what’s going on, we also want them to feel good about their own lives.”

The 600 block of Baker Street in Nelson became the focus of a traditional Christmas on Friday night. The annual Christmas on Baker Street event was orga-nized by local church groups and included a live nativity scene, music, hot chocolate and cele-bration over the birth of Jesus. In this photo the Nelson Community Christian School sings carols for the crowd.

Women at FAIR’s Day of Remembrance and Action event placed roses as they read the names of those who were killed in the Mon-treal Massacre that occurred on Dec. 6 1989. The crowd at the event last Tuesday at the Trail United Church Hall held a moment of silence in recognition of this tragedy. The annual Stop the Violence event commemorated women who’ve suffered from violence but also opened the fl oor to discussion on taking a proactive approach. Valerie Rossi photo

A Trail mural that highlights how vital the Columbia River is to the community’s history is now fur-ther depicted in an interpretive display in East Trail. Teck paid for the $5,000 sign that just went up this week across from River Reconnect, the city’s seventh mural. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Trail councillor Gord De-Rosa, as he noted the sign also gives special
thanks to the mural’s major sponsors. Th e 200-foot-wide paint-ing on the Trail Me-morial Centre off ers symbolic images like a bald eagle with a maple leaf wing - rep-resenting the trans-boundary of the Columbia as two na-tions, one river. Th is and other details are explained on the sign on the boat launch road near Gyro Park, which off ers a perfect view of the city’s larg-est painting by Nelson artists Tyler Toews and Steven Stolka.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Growing desires and/or requirements to deepen commitments is in focus. As much as you may want to rebel you
know it won’t help. This urge probably won’t last very long anyway. Financial considerations are activating your
determination. Yet you need new tools, skills and/or approaches. An attitude adjustment may be in order as well.
Work with it and it will work for you!
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)Expanding your vision includes increasing your lot. Ironically, this may include the urge to downsize. Creating a more
effi cient fl ow is a central goal. Is there anything unnecessary in the way? It could be old stuff, or perhaps the blocks are
in you. Either way get clear as you can and must. Given the time of year the time is right. Aim for a fresh start on 2012.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Establishing new alliances on personal, social and/or professional fronts continues. Accessing truths and building
upon new levels of trust is a current theme. Digging deep to access understanding and forgiveness is part of the plot.
This delicate learning curve is requires emphasizing ethical values like fairness. Speak your truth.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Aims to establish a steadier daily rhythm remain a top priority. Showing the courage to access latent gifts, talents and
powers is important. This is a call to assert a commanding lead. This is when your strong offence is your best defence.
Ideally you are willing to sample and experiment. Balance assertiveness with diplomacy for best results.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)A creative cycle continues to rock your boat. You are gearing up for a dynamic push. Yet, your confi dence levels may
feel challenged. A commitment to learning new methods and embracing new philosophies is more than just ideal.
This is a time to give more than usual. You are allowed to weave practicality into your offering.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)Creating new foundations continues. Whether it is actual structures, your confi dence levels or otherwise, this is a time to
build. Implied is the process of replacing what is outworn with ‘new and improved’. Fortunately, you are in a creative mood.
Good investments will pay off handsomely and soon, yet lack of action and effort could be the reverse. Step it up!
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)Increasing your social network continues. Dreams and visions of a brighter future are dancing in your mind. Accepting changes
that have occurred on relationship fronts is important. You are just about through a major cycle. You will enter new territory
somehow in 2012. For now, create beauty in your home, embrace family and friends and appreciate the changing season.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)Gently letting go of what was and nurturing a new vision of possibility is in the spotlight. The challenge includes letting
go of perceptions and roles of power and authority. Perhaps the new you or approach is merely a different shade or
refl ection of what once was. Alternatively, you are ready for something quite different. Discerning between what you
want and what is wanted of you is the spiritual challenge.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)New levels of passion and determination are on the rise. The search for tools, methods and modes of approach that
are more refi ned and streamlined than what they once were is on your mind. This distillation process asks that you
decipher how you can be of greatest service. Thus how can you meet others according to their needs, styles and
levels of understanding? Good answers could produce big returns.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)Taking some time out to rest and rejuvenate before a new round begins continues. This may also prove to be a contemplative,
experimental and strategic time. You are eager to make some solid investments. Diversifying probably makes most sense.
Many streams of return can amount to a river. How to balance assertiveness with diplomacy to win is ever the ideal question.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)Dreams and visions of a brighter future are more than a tease in your mind. Somehow you are being groomed for bigger
things to come. For now you must earn your stripes and build your confi dence levels. This will continue well into 2012. How
can you engage pro-actively? Tune-in to your souls desire, decipher what is realistically required and follow through.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Whether your goals are directly linked to business or to increasing your popularity and infl uence, taking calculated
risks to expand your scope of infl uence in the world continues. This includes tapping-in to your friend network. Your
willingness to change and adapt to the times is important. Diversifying without scattering your focus remains ideal.
TIP OF THE WEEK: We are now in the fi nal stretch towards Solstice,
Christmas, Hanukkah, the New Year…. Whatever your cultural orientations, this is a
special time. It marks an end and beginning; another round of the Sun, or of the earth, depending on how you want to look at it. So, a new
calendar year is about to begin and this creates a distinct shift for us all. It is like our collective birthday!
Alternatively, the moment when the Sun returns to the exact Zodiacal position it was at time of fi rst breath at birth marks our offi cial personal birthday. This can occur a day before or after our offi cial birth date. In Astrology this exact moment is called Solar Return. A chart cast for this event illustrates themes and events that
will unfold over the course of the year.
Appreciating cycles of time this way implies a conscious resolve to evolve in consciousness. Astrology can serve to lift us beyond common survival instincts to conscious co-creation. Imagine our world with such a shared intention! Survival instincts ever pose a threat to truly humane, civilized living. The time has come for a greater collective vision and ‘good Astrology’
can help measurably!
