HEAD COACH DAVID DEANBy any measure David Dean’s first two seasons as head football coach at the University of West Georgia were a success. Dean arrived in Carrollton in January 2017, on the eve of signing day, and led the Wolves to nine victories and a return to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. In his second season last year, West Georgia won 10 games and reached the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five seasons. In the second week of the season in 2019, Dean stepped even more into history, becoming the third coach in Gulf South Conference history with 100 wins in his career. Were there up-and-downs, and some disappoint-ments? Certainly, but from start to finish, Dean put his stamp on a veteran roster and veteran coaching staff. The result was a Wolves team back in the national picture in Division II football. A 9-4 record and a play-off spot came in year one under Dean, followed by a 10-2 record, top-five national ranking and the fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs in the past five seasons came in year two. Dean was no stranger to the Carrollton campus when he returned to UWG last season. He brought with him a resume that would rival any coach in the nation. As an assistant or as a head coach, David Dean and his football teams are winners. A former wide receiver at Georgia Tech, Dean got his introduction to the wars of Gulf South Conference football in 1988 when he began a four-year run on the staff at Valdosta State. In 1992 Dean moved to Car-rollton for an eight-year run on the staff at West Geor-gia. That stint included the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coor-dinator, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive

as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 record and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s cir-cle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, av-eraging 42 points a game during a postseason march to a second national title. That second national title with the Blazers put Dean in rare company. College football has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s, and during that time only three football coaches in this state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS crowns at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in Statesboro with a pair of championships of his own, and now it is also David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State cov-ered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II conference, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 13-6. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous individual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and a national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flour-ishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is

following the most successful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 campaign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caroline, Allison, and Natalie.

NGU Last WeekThe Crusaders pulled off a huge road victory last week, taking down GSC power West Alabama in dramatic fashion with a 29-28 victory. North Greenville overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter while Matt Gravely knocked through a field goal with 16-seconds left on the clock to give NGU an upset win over a ranked Division II opponent. Both scores for the Crusaders came in the final five minutes of the contest.

Freshman of the Week Redshirt freshman running back Chauncey Williams was close to the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week award in the opening week with 46 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Norcross native left no doubt against Limestone, picking up 218 yards on 21 carries with two more touchdowns to earn not only GSC Freshman of the Week honors, but he was also named GSC Offensive Player of the Week as well. He had a solid game against Shorter last week with 126 yards rushing and three touchdowns and he is now second in the GSC with 480 yards rushing on the year.

NGU On DefenseNorth Greenville is eighth in the league in scoring at 19.8 per game, and is seventh in scoring defense, giving up 25.6 points per game. On the yardage side the Cru-saders are seventh in yards gained at 339.6 per game. Defensively, North Greenville is third in the GSC with 317.0 yards per game allowed.

North Greenville POWFour North Greenville players have earned GSC Player of the Week notices this season. Running back Dre Williams captured top offensive honors following the Cru-saders’ win over Newberry. Kick returner Harold Hilton was named top special teams performer for his per-formance vs. Western Carolina, and defensive lineman Chauncey Haney was voted the league’s top defensive player for his performance vs. Delta State. Last week, two North Greenville players named the league’s best after the win at West Alabama; quarterback Bryce Fields for offense, and linebacker Dantevian Byrd was selected the league’s best defensive performer.

Weekly HonorsThe first Gulf South Conference weekly award came the way of the wolf in the second game of the season, as freshman running back Chauncey Williams was named the Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Limestone. But the Norcross native didn’t stop there, as he was also named the GSC Freshman of the Week for his 218-yard night, which was the fifth-best rushing night for any back in school history. He is second in average yards (96.0) and also in average yards per carry, with 8.0 ypc on the season thus far.

Next Level WolvesAlex Armah (‘16) continues to be the standard for West Georgia players at the next level, as he remains the starting fullback for the Carolina Panthers. Marcus Sayles (‘16) has been outstanding for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this year, blocking two punts thus far. Malik Henry (‘18) has been added to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad and Devontae Jackson made it to the final cut with the Denver Broncos. He is expected to sign with an NFL practice squad.

THE LAST MEETINGOctober 6, 2018 - Carrollton, GA The West Georgia offense racked more than 500 yards total in the first meeting between the Wolves and the North Greenville Crusaders, pow-ering UWG to a 31-6 victory at University Stadium in Carrollton, Ga. Willie Candler passed for 211 yards and a touchdown and added another score on 84 yards rushing for one of his best overall days in a West Georgia uniform. Freshman Christian Royalston exploded onto the scene with a 71-yard touch-down romp as the Wolves rolled up 283 yards on the ground. Through the air, Candler completed 20 passes to 12 different receivers, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Brandon Walton in the victory. On the defensive side of the ball, the UWG de-fense was relentless against the North Greenville offense, allowing just 52 yards rushing and 119 yards passing for less than 200 total yards gained for the Crusaders. Senior Barron Burns intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, the first defensive score of the year for the Wolves.

Night KickoffFor the third time in the first five games this season, the Wolves will kickoff an evening game. West Geor-gia won over Limestone in the first meeting on Sep-tember 14 in a 24-14 victory, then lost in back-to-back weeks against Albany State and Florida Tech with both games kicking of at 7 p.m. This one will be different, as the Wolves and Crusaders will be under the lights of Younts Stadium as well as the lights of national television, as the game will be broadcast on ESPN+. In the 30 games where West Georgia has been one of the two teams in the GSC Game of the Week, none have been via pay-per-view until this Saturday’s contest.

Special Team Player of the WeekOmar Cervantes was named Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his perfor-mance in last week’s win over Shorter. A sophomore from Fort Valley, Cervantes last week was a perfect four-of-four on field goal attempts, connecting from 40, 23, and 33 yards out. He was also a perfect five-of-five on points after touchdown, had three kickoffs out of the end zone, and punted once for 46. Cervantes was last season named All-GSC First Team, All-Super Region 2 First Team, and was an honorable mention choice for Don Hansen Division II All-America Team.

On the RushAlso enjoying a huge day for UWG in last week’s shorter win was running back Chauncey Williams. The redshirt freshman from Norcross rushed 16 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns.

Rushing Yardage RecordsWest Georgia rushed for 351 yards two weeks ago against Limestone, marking the 10th-best night for total rushing yards in school history. The last time a UWG squad topped the 300-yard rushing mark was against Fort Valley State in the 2017 season. The top rushing game in school history happened against Samford in 1984, when West Georgia rushed for a whopping 463 yards. Two times in program history, a UWG squad has gone over 400 yards rushing. The other 400-yard game was against Mississippi College in 2014.

UWG Milestones Chauncey Williams had a night to remember against Limestone, rushing 21 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns in the game. That marks the fifth-best rushing total in a single game in school history, tying UWG Hall-of-Fame running back Stevie Young against Mississippi College in 1985. Williams had a 92-yard touchdown run against the Saints, just the fourth time in school history that a player has had a 90-yard play from scrimmage. Williams is currently second in the Gulf South Con-ference in rushing yards per game.

Both Teams In the GSCWest Georgia comes into play vs. North Greenville ranked fifth in the Gulf South Conference in scoring offense at 24.8 points per game, and they rank sixth in the league in scoring defense for surrendering 25.4 points per contest. The Wolves rank fourth in total offense with 415.8 points per game, and are sixth in total defense at 374.6 yards allowed per game. West Georgia is fifth in the league in scoring

GAME NOTES: OFFENSEGaining ExperienceFreshman running back Chauncey Williams is UWG’s top rusher on the season, carrying 60 times for 480 yards, an average of 8.0 yards per carry. His eight touchdowns and 48 points are tied for the top total in the Gulf South Conference, and his 480 rushing yards place him second in the league after five games. Earlier this season Williams’ perfor-mance vs. Limestone earned him both player of the week, and freshman of the week honors from the Gulf South Conference.

On the LineThis week’s game vs. North Greenville marks the third consecutive week that West Georgia has started the same five-man unit on the interior of its offensive line. Center Danny Connors, guards Parker Gibbs and Benjamin Walters, along with tackles Spencer Myers and James Works are set to open the game along the Wolves’ front wall. Connors and Works were the only returning linemen coming into 2019 with collegiate starts on the line.

Explosive PlaysWest Georgia had seven plays of 20 or more yards against Shorter in the fifth week of the season. Willie Candler started the bulk of those, as five of the explosive plays were in the passing game. Candler connected with John Hurst for the longest play, an 81-yard touchdown strike. The other long play for a score came on the legs of Chauncey Williams on his 48-yard touchdown run. Quan Harrison had a 23-yard reception and Rajaez Mosley added a 22-yard run for the top-four long plays against Shorter.

Willie Candler WatchCareer yardage and completions weren’t the only major numbers for Candler a week ago. The se-nior from Atlanta had the most prolific passing day of his career in UWG’s win over Shorter, complet-ing 27-of-35 for 332 yards and one touchdown. The yardage total was Candler’s second 300-yard game of the season, and the third of his career. Also, his 332 yards marked the 12th highest single game yardage total in West Georgia history.

Hurst Goes Off Against ShorterSenior John Hurst was UWG’s top receiv-er in the win over Shorter. In his first game back from a shoulder injury, Hurst reeled in six catches for 106 yards. This includes the 81-yard, first quarter catch-and-run for a touchdown. It was the longest scoring play of Hurst’s career, surpassing the 80-yard TD he scored vs. Shorter in 2017. His 2018 perfor-mance vs. Shorter included a 57-yard touch-down catch. Hurst’s three-game production vs. Shorter includes 10 receptions, 294 yards, and four touchdowns. The senior comes into Saturday’s game at North Greenville needing just 150 yards to become the 16th 1,000-yard receiver in school history.

GAME NOTES: DEFENSEAgainst the PassThe UWG defense is fourth in the league against the pass this season, giving up 175.0 yards per game through the air. The Wolves are led by cornerback Latrell Gibbs and safety Javon Charleston in pass breakups this year. Gibbs has four pass breakups to lead the team while Charleston has three. As a team, the Wolves have 22 pass breakups and 27 passes defended on the yea

On the Front LinesWith three NFL prospects in the front seven, expect opposing offenses to have tough sledding against the West Georgia front line. Chad Price and Korie Rogers have solid experience at this level, but the coaching staff expects Auzoyah “Big Z” Alufohai to be a force in the middle. At 6-foot-4, 320 lbs, Big Z will make things difficult on teams to run in the middle. Try the outside and meet Gardenhire or Price on either side. Get past any of those three and the backs will have to contend with Rogers and Matthew Parker at linebacker.

GSC LeadersBoth West Georgia and North Greenville have two players among the top-10 in the Gulf South Confer-ence in tackles this season. NGU’s Johnny Worthy and Chauncey Haney are second and third in the league, averaging 8.0 and 7.6 tackles per game, respectively. Chris Blackston and Korie Rogers are tied for the UWG lead with 33 total tackles, and the pair are tied for 9th in the GSC in that category.

Wolves Defensive BackfieldDepending on the offensive scheme, leaders on the defensive side of the ball change from game-to-game. Early in the season, the UWG defensive line was leading the charge in tackles, but against Shorter the secondary stepped into the limelight. The top four tacklers in that contest were from the secondary, led by nine tackles from redshirt fresh-man M.J. Latimer.

Turnover MarginAgainst Shorter this past week, the UWG defense was a hard-hitting bunch, forcing four fumbles in the game. Safety Mike Miller had the only fumble recovery in the game, and also had his first inter-ception at West Georgia. The interesting part of that story for Miller is that he played the bulk of the snaps, but had no tackles in the win. He did however, pick up two turnovers for the Wolves.

Tackles for a LossThe UWG defense comes into the Week 6 of the season with 30 tackles for a loss thus far. The Wolves delivered on four tackles for a loss in the opener against Catawba, then repeated that number against Limestone in the second week. Sixteen different players have a tackle for a loss, with Korie Rogers leading the charge with seven for a loss of 21 yards. T.J. Fehoko and Deandre Gardenhire each have 3.5 tackles for a loss, tying for second on the team in that category.

For the first time since the 2015 season, there will not be someone named Jackson in the back-field for the University of West Georgia, as former All-American Devontae Jackson has moved on via graduation to the next level, spending the last five months with the Denver Broncos. In the first year under head coach David Dean, West Georgia boasted the fifth-best rushing total in program history, rushing for 2,376 yards in 13 games. Year two in 2018 saw the Wolves come within a yard of that total, rushing for 2,375 yards in just 12 games. The new mantle in 2019 will be taken up by a stable of young and capable backs. Christian Roy-alston was the backup in 2018 as a true freshman and won the starting job for 2019 in spring practice and fall drills in preparation for the year. Behind him is a trio of solid backs in Rajaez Mosley, Chauncey Williams, and Eric Swinney. Mosley is a true fresh-man from Valdosta, Williams is a redshirt freshman from Norcross and Swinney transferred to UWG after three years at Ole Miss.
