this Curriculum Handbook is designed to help you make a careful choice of subjects in the senior school. these choices are very important for your future and it is vital that you choose the right course direction – because the further you go in the senior school the more difficult it becomes to change that direction.

•study the Curriculum Map and Prerequisites on pages 8 and 9 which follow the subjects through from Year 9 - Year 13. Note particularly those subjects which carry through and those which stop at Year 11 or Year 12, also paying particular attention to the prerequisites required to be able to select and continue with your chosen subject.

•If you have made a clear career choice which requires Year 13 qualifications, start with the subject you need at that level and work backwards.

•If you are uncertain about your career, keep your options open and your subject choices as broadly based as possible.

•Use all the school resources to check on career opportunities and subject requirements-talk to the school Careers Advisor, subject teachers and Heads of Departments or contact : Careers New Zealand: Phone 0800 222 733 or www.careers.govt.nz or individual Institute’s websites.

•Discuss this handbook with parents/guardians/caregivers.

this handbook has been prepared to assist students at Wesley College as they plan their future academic studies.

the handbook also gives information about the requirements for NCeA and University entrance.

As students read the handbook and plan for the next year they are also encouraged to look ahead and plan for the remainder of their secondary schooling and for employment/further studies after they leave Wesley College.

staff are available to assist students as they make their choices and to answer any questions that may come from the information given in this handbook.

I encourage each student to aim for excellence. the College motto: Fide, Litteris, Labore by faith, by letters (education) and Labour (hard work) is an encouragement to aim for excellence in everything.

Use tHIs FORMULA tO CHOOse YOUR sUBjeCts•How good are you at a subject

•How easily do you understand it

•Your test marks and your work will help you estimate your ability

•Discuss your ability with your teacher. You might have a false idea of how well you can do something

•Be careful not to under-rate your ability

ABILItY

•At which year level do you plan to leave school?

•What do you plan to do when you leave school?

•What are your short and long term goals?

•You may not know what work you would like to do – the majority of students do not. But if you do know or if you have ideas about what you would like to do you can research what subjects might be needed. Visit: Careers NZ - www.careers.govt.nz

•Go through the possible subjects as listed on the ‘Curriculum Map’ (pages 8 and 9) and check the prerequisites

•Put a tick alongside each possibility and investigate those subjects thoroughly

•Make your final choice

•Add to your ability your interest - what you enjoy doing

•Reasons for enjoyment might be because of the work, the teacher, or because you seem good at it

•You gain more satisfaction and probably reach a higher standard in your work if you are interested in it

•Look at the subjects you wish to study in future years

•some subjects, if dropped early, may prove difficult to take up again later.

•some subjects can be started at any year level, some subjects require credits from previous study

•Look at entry criteria for tertiary training

ACADeMIC AND VOCAtIONAL sUBjeCts

Wesley College teaches both academic and vocational subjects in which NCeA credits can be achieved.

the difference between academic and vocational subjects is theory versus practice. Academic subjects generally teach theoretical knowledge whereas vocational subjects tend to have some theoretical training but mostly hands-on training. If, for example, you are studying to be a carpenter, you would spend some time being told about how to perform a task but would spend far more time actually carrying out the task. Rather than sitting in a classroom, you would be actually building something – thereby "learning by doing."

the vocational subjects offered at Wesley College are: Hospitality, travel & tourism, transition, Construction (BCAts), Digital technology, Product Design and credits can also be achieved through a work placement on the Gateway scheme.

Academic education, on the other hand, focuses on reading material, being told information, and discussing material in groups. there also tends to be a strong emphasis on writing. Academic subjects focus more on the understanding of concepts in a theoretical setting rather than applying them in a practical setting.

For those wishing to pursue university level study, students must achieve Wesley College’s prerequisites (see pages 8 and 9) to be able to select the academic subjects of their choice. University entrance requires 42 credits at Level 3 in three approved subjects (14 credits required in each subject). the remaining credits to achieve NCeA Level 3 may come from either achievement or unit standards. the literacy and numeracy requirements must also be met.
