Women’s Educa.on Project An Update, May 2016
Women’s Educa9on Project 244 Fi@h Avenue, w208 New York, NY 10001 www.WomensEduca9onProject.org
Women’s Educa9on Project would like to thank its many kind donors for helping our students in India graduate from college, pursue careers and prepare for their ride ahead!
In Academic Year 2015-‐2016, fi@y-‐seven WEP scholarship students graduated from college, thirty-‐one completed 12th grade, and twelve successfully passed the (extremely challenging) 10th grade exam!
Our new alumnae received degrees in English, History, Economics, Math, Informa9on Technology, Bio-‐Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Business Administra9on. Two students completed voca9onal degrees, one to become a lab technician; the other, a nurse.
In 2015, Women’s Educa.on Project Centers in Madurai, Hyderabad and Kadapa, India were lively places. 293 young women, the first in their families to pursue higher educa9on, studied, explored career possibili9es and most importantly, discovered their voice.
Each day at WEP Centers, our students returned from their colleges to take computer classes, spoken English, and Math and Commerce tutorials. They planned I am a Leader workshops and fieldtrips, enjoyed nutri9ous snacks and exercise classes, and found a quiet space to study – all while crea9ng a “jolly place where you will meet a lot of friends!” WEP student speaking to a friend in her village, April 2016.
In our unique I am a Leader curriculum, students, completed chapters on health, nutri9on, civic responsibility, rights, personal finance, environment, communica9on, and leadership. They abended workshops, went on fieldtrips, discovered career opportuni9es and community resources. In 2015, they: • Celebrated Interna9onal Women’s Day, Indian
Independence Day, Diwali, and New Year’s Day. • Ran around the world, watched documentaries, and lit
candles for WEP’s interna9onal events.
• Visited a radio sta9on, bookstores (to fill their Center’s libraries), the High Court, organic farms, den9sts, and physiotherapists.
• Prepared tradi9onal Tamil Food, planted terrace
gardens, and explored topics on nutri9on, medicinal plants, the carbon footprint, crea9vity, and money management.
• Inves9gated careers in journalism, health, the environment, law, and finance.
• Developed their “chops” in Karate and Tamil Silambam (self-‐defense classes).
• Held student mee9ngs, mother’s and parent’s days and
discussed their favorite authors in book club.
Our students say … Names of students have been changed.
“Hi, my name is Nalini. I live a village outside of Madurai. I am a scholarship student and Student President of WEP-‐Sudar. I am doing my 3rd year B.Sc Maths (Computer Applica9ons). I want to become a teacher in a public school. My father is a vegetable vendor in market. My mom helps him in business. I have an elder sister, who is married and has two children. I also have one younger brother. Sudar is a wonderful organisa9on one who supports for village girls’ educa9on, career and provides life skill opportuni9es.”
Sudha, final year B.A. English, helps her mother sell snacks at a bus stand when not abending college and WEP.
“Hi, I am Mahalakshmi doing B.SC Botany/Microbiology. My aim is to become a microbiologist, research and discover new plants. I want to study M.Phil. My father is illiterate and a carpenter and my mother, studied 12th, is a homemaker. I love my family so much …
My parents are interested in my studies and allow me to study whatever I want. First, I came WEP-‐Sudar to learn computers but, a@er, mam gave me scholarship. I was so much happy. This scholarship helps my parents very much and the support of WEP-‐Sudar is very much essen9al for my family...”
SINCE 2002 OUR ALUMNAE, almost 600 students have abended WEP Centers and 64% have been placed in their first jobs. Recent employment includes: • (WEP) Admin Assistants and Computer Teachers • Training Coordinator at Aravind Eye Care System • Physiotherapist (assistant) • Tamil Professor (assistant) • Sales Woman at Bombay Fancy • Stock Maintenance In-‐Charge at a Medical Agency • Tele-‐Caller at Hydro Tech Limited • Spoken English teacher at the Gandhi Museum
“Hi, My name is Nalini. I successfully completed my BDS Degree with lots of struggle. Now I am prac9cing in a private clinic. I like one beau9ful proverb is that “A friend in need is a friend indeed” likewise WEP-‐Sudar has given me lots of support when I was in need. Sudar equipped especially reading habit and communica9on skills. I always proud to being a part of WEP-‐Sudar family. I would like to convey my gra9tude to them for doing such a great job.”
“Hi, I am Chinna Nachi. WEP-‐Sudar has not just given me financial help. Before, I was basically a rural girl who hesitated to convey my feelings, opinions and to interact with others. WEP-‐Sudar gave valuable encouragement. I have completed my PG degree only with their immense help. A@er I worked at Tata Motor Finance Ltd for 3 years ... [then passed a gov. exam] and have been appointed as the Assistant in Indian Medicine and Homeopathy Department.”
Meanwhile, back in New York, WEP’s 2016 Red Bangle was awarded to Shabana Basij-‐Rasikh, co-‐founder of the School of Leadership Afghanistan, a boarding school for girls in Kabul. Kayce Jennings, WEP’s 2015 recipient and Execu9ve Producer of Girl Rising (receiving the award on behalf of the girls featured in the film) awarded Shabana the Red Bangle. Following the ceremony, WEP’s Founding Execu9ve Director, Zoë Timms, joined Ms. Jennings and Ms. Basij-‐Rasikh in a discussion on girls and women’s educa9on and their respec9ve organiza9ons’ successes. The ceremony was held in honor of Interna9onal Women’s Day at White & Case LLP.
The University of Wisconsin-‐Madison 2015 mid-‐winter commencement speaker class of ’97 and WEP’s Founding Execu9ve Director Zoë Timms. Zoë shared with the graduates how her study abroad in Hyderabad led to a job offer to run the same program in Madurai, and, through the inspiring young women she met, ul9mately to forming Women’s Educa9on Project.
