MarcPaperScissor - Never has a moniker for a young and talented artist more aptly described who he is and what he does. His name is Marc, and all he uses to meticulously create some of the most colorful, original, and thought provoking art since Peter Max is colored card stock Paper and a pair of Scissors.

Three years ago, while sometimes attending class at The University of Central Florida in Orlando, Marc was watching a lot of TV and ruminating somewhat solemnly on the unsteady direction of our planet’s future. Frustrated, concerned, and inspired, Marc jumped on the latter side of the phrase, “Either you’re a part of the problem, or a part of the solution.”

“solution” side of the Earth’s tragic equation. And what sparked this realization? Once again, it was the TV - specifically, a program about actor/activist Woody Harrelson’s crusade to save the environment. This is why Marc’s plans for the immediate future include launching a series of “recycled paper art.” And whose help is he seeking in launching such a bold and noble venture? Mr. Woody Harrelson himself. So, Woody, if you’re reading this… just know that WE are looking to MERGE you with MarcPaperScissor.

But let’s also let it be known that there’s more to MarcPaperScissor than just a need to awaken our collective consciousness one colored paper cut-out at a time. He is also working on a children’s book, which will utilize his own poetry and will of course be fully illustrated with “paper art.” The yet untitled book will tell the story of a man who flies to Mars to test his theory that the planet is made out of jelly.

And, as a part-time musician, Marc has found his way into the socially conscious jam band scene, allowing him to introduce his art to all the jam band followers and festival (Langerado, Bonaroo, Burning Man, etc) goers. “Reality is normality, and I am just trying to be different.”

He withdrew from society and entered into a hermit-like artistic incubation period, creating the initial pieces of what he calls, “paper art.” Images of brains, clocks, atoms, televisions, the Earth, and men in suits became reoccurring icons, all designed to work together in a way that would serve to get the viewers thinking. The goal was to get them to think about the world of corruption, depleted resources, and corporate dominance that we live in. He’s fulfilled the production side of his goal, so now all he needs is the exposure.

Due to his young age and inexperience with the business side of art, Marc has yet to exhibit his work at a gallery (with the exception of a showing at Florida Atlantic University’s Davie campus). However, that won’t be the case for long. Living close to many of Ft. Lauderdale’s newest and hottest galleries and having spent another productive stretch of time as a recluse – this time creating the ultimate self promotion tool, his website (www.MarcPaperScissor.com) – Marc is now ready to introduce the world to a style of art with a message that it desperately needs to see.

Asia is what many spoken w o r d p o e t s aspire to be – accomplished. He is proof that you get out what you put in. After years of putting in work practicing his craft on microphones at various South Florida poetry venues Asia has in a sense “made it.” His long list of accomplishments includes appearing on the TV show “Spoken” on The Black Family Channel, taking 12th place individually amongst almost 800 poets at the 2006 National Poetry Slam Championship in Austin, TX, and taking 5th place in the team competition with his Miami teammates (Chunky, Will Da Real One, & Caheej). Add to that the fact that Asia has also earned himself one of the highest credits in the genre of Spoken Word Poetry – an appearance on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, produced by Russell Simmons. It was on this esteemed show that Asia performed one of his signature pieces, “The Waiting Hour.”

This art school graduate and corporate world expatriate of Filipino descent can serve as an example to all poets who desire to build up their credentials until they can reach what is most likely their ultimate goal – to make poetry into a career. Funky Gorilla Fist , in the words of its author, Anthony F. Pepe, is “a story that doesn’t have a moral, carry any weighty social commentary, and doesn’t possess any special philosphoy or higher message. It is just a look back at what one life could have become had it continued unchecked.”

Thankfully for us, Pepe’s life didn’t go on unchecked. Instead, it took a turn that brought him to Florida, where he was able to leave behind the debauchery

that accompanied his former life as a strip club bouncer to focus his energy on writing. With plenty of experience to draw from, he penned a 124 page novella with enough gruesome detail to actually bring the reader into his former world – a world where three men beat another man with bats for hitting on the wrong girl and making an off color comment and then proceed to place $1,000 bets on how many minutes it will take for him to die. It’s also commonplace in this world to answer the door with a

cigar in your mouth, a beer in one hand, an issue of Hustler magazine in the other, and an

erection when it’s a pair of friendly Jeh-vah’s Witness-es knocking.

O bv i o u s l y not a book for ever y-one, “Funky Gorilla Fist” does require a reader with an open mind and a strong

stomach, but there is no discounting the fact that every chapter is well written and the character development

is as worthy of praise as that of any bestseller on your local bookstore shelf.

Although the author might consider this book to be a mere look back at a former life that he says in his closing statement maybe shouldn’t have even been written, I believe it to be a vividly entertaining movie on paper and a quick read that is hard to put down before reading the very last word. When a love poem: or Suicide Permis-sion is onboard a flying vessel:

It could crash or be torn wing to wing: wound around the strings: you know a rattle or buzz

If on a locomotive however: Invisibil-ity may occur for the inhabitants

So much so that: Suicide is No Longer Necessary-

In some form or fashion half of you are locked in some prison. Be it your husband, or your wife, or just your way of living. Some of you right now in here are locked up by the spirit of fear, especially the women whose hus-bands have been beating them for years, to the point that she don’t even shed tears. She becomes immune to his doom, so she dances to his tune as she patiently waits for the music to start and even though her eyes are swelled she knows how well he plays her piano in the dark. While he plays her piano, she sings soprano til she feels good. Leave, she should, she probably would if she could, but she thinks breaking up the family is a sin so she remains locked in his mental 8 by 10.

What about a few good men? The ones who were constantly pushed away from day to day to only one day foolishly realize he’s better off gay? He couldn’t get love at home so he asked his brother for a hug, through brotherly love looking for affection and realized that both of them had erections and through male bond-ing they made their own corrections. This was caused by the strife of an unloving wife both of them are now stereotyped in the world’s 8 by 10.

Or how about a mother and father’s greatest trea-sure, like a child dragged through drastic measures of peer pressure, hoping that their friend’s don’t close the door on their 8 by 10 and if so you as a parent live long enough to receive their amends, and society has already predicted their end and that’s in an 8 by 10.

What that about that job you gave all your blood, sweat, and tears and you still have the same title after forty years. You were scared to get fired because you were hoping to retire and no one mentioned, there is no pension. Hope this sits in while you’re in your 8 by 10.

And those dope boys, they usually die often and the reality of their 8 by 10 is usually a coffin or in hell, cough-ing from the smoke. The devil produces a slow choke inflicting wrath on his ghetto fab fam leaving them broke with lots of dope and no hope.

News flash, this just in. The Reverend has committed seven deadly sins, but he’s been aquitted from his 8 by 10 because he let the devil in, and he’s been doing half the choir in and tricking with lesbians and keeping secrets from the deacons. But the Reverend is human too, I’m sure he has his reasons.

The true answer is to wait on faith because faith works, but faith without works is dead works. Patience hurts, even the darkness has its perks. You see, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail and it was the power of prayer that got Jonah out of the whale. He had enough belief to make Mary hail, and just like him I’ll lay still in the belly of the beast. I’ve been arrested, but I can’t be digested cuz I’m protected by HIM in my 8 by 10.

Dwayne Adams is a South Florida photographer and graphic designer. He has

helped produce album covers, magazine ads, and fashion photography for corporate clients as well as

local artists and musicians.

Dwayne stud ied at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale from 2001-2004. Also, he is certified with NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals). In 2004 he joined forces with UnderLab Studios to expand on his talents. This is where WeMerge’d with Dwayne and found that photography isn’t all about just

taking some pictures. “You have to know what to look for. It’s hard work, but I love it,” he says while cleaning his camera. After years of running around and snapping shots for UnderLab, he now has a very impressive portfolio, with a ton of friends to go along with it.

We Have a Winner

There’s really nothing more entertaining and inspiring than watching a quality locally-produced independent film. A local avante guard filmmaker and 2004 graduate from The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale named J. Vinazza is here to inspire and entertain us all with his eye-catching films that draw on his experiences as a poet, painter, and graffiti artist.

One thing that makes J. Vinazza’s films so unique is the fact that none of his characters are portrayed by trained professional actors. Instead, he casts his films with local rappers, musicians, and artists and is able to bring out the actor in them with his agreeable and friendly approach to directing.

Motivated by local film competitions, J. Vinazza has released 3 of his best short films within the last year and has experienced a rise in his productivity that is sure to make him one of the most saught after filmmakers in the area. “Bulletfist: No Honor In Regret” was entered into the 2006 48-Hour Film Project, and “Jonny Efficient” was entered into the 2007 version of the same contest. His film, “Cut Your Hand on the Good Book,” was entered into the 2007 grindhouse Deathmatch Contest, sponsored by the Improv Export Co., and won the $100 first place prize.

J. Vinazza’s main project going into the future is the completion of his first feature-length film, entitled “Self: Direction 7.” This film has been in production for the past 5 years and includes an all-star cast of “local celebrities.” For more on J. WeMerge Magazine wishes to congratulate Dawn Dubriel as the 1st Place Winner of The Improv Export’s - QUICK and DEAD Film Festival on Saturday - October 13th, 2007 at Kevro Art Bar in Delray Beach. Her short film was called “Champagne.”

Having traveled all over Europe, South America, and across the U.S., Dawn Dubriel has a sense of culture and wisdom that is very apparent in her on-screen vision, as well as in her lyrics as her rap artist alter-ego “Redawn.”

Dubriel is a seasoned veteran in the art of storytelling, as shown in her latest cut, “Champagne” and her LA Film School thesis short film entitled “Revenge of the B-Girls.” Although she admits that she had a lot of help in creating her first place film, she displayed great direction in her work on the project as a Writer/Director.

Dawn was sure to earn the win after having served as co-director of “Bulletfist: No Honor in Regret” & “Jonny Efficient,” both of which were produced by UnderLab Studios and entered into The 48-Hour Film Project, in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

After helping J.Vinazza in his film “Cut Your Hand on The Good Book” as his Director of Photography, she came back to the Improv Export in 2007 to deliver her next smash hit. “Champagne” had the audiences cringing in thier seats and bemused at some of the madness displayed on the plasma TV at Kevro Art Bar (www.KevroArt.com).

the crow and the boulder fell, landing on his head, and the boy fell face first into the filthy pond.

The crow began to scream with all its might. Flapping its wings, it howled and screamed, until once again neighbors rushed out with such anger that this time, they came armed with more than just sticks or stones but with a large BB gun rifle. Without any hesitation the neighbor shot the crow across the chest. Blood gushed out, rendering the crow dead, but as if a final gesture of

kinship for this little boy, he landed in the middle of the pond, giving a direction of sight for its murderers to be aware of its warnings.

And so this crow, labeled a pest, served its purpose in this universe. Never given credit for his role in this boy’s life. Yet he still remained in the heart of him, even after he became a man, realizing the sanctity of life and all the vessels that carry it.

animation have its long hours, but also that animators like Julio are creators of life. He first comes up with the names and emotions for his characters. Then he designs them - everything from clothes to facial features. He digitally rigs his characters with bones, which allows him to pupeteer their movements. He becomes an actor, director, and storyteller at the click of a mouse, creating stunning and compelling animations.

Heavenly seemed the dark bird that perched on top of the tall trees behind the boy’s house. Each day this crow would come sit and watch the boy play by a small pond with paper boats he would create, as the boy was already a master of origami. The crow would watch as the boy would sink the boats with stones that surrounded the muddy waters, perhaps imagining a naval battle at his whim.

The boy always noticed the bird, who to others seemed sort of frightening. His cackles would stir anger and frustration to the neighbors. At times some of them would come out and throw stones at the bird, watching it jump and fly on, only com-ing back when the boy was near.

“Why do you come, crow? My neighbors hate you and there is no reason for you to come here.”

The bird squawked once more as if to respond to the boy’s inquiry. But no sense was made of the strange noises created by this fowl’s voicebox.

Days and nights passed and the crow still came back each day to watch this boy play by his pond, his usual game of “sink the battleship.” This time the boy decided to create a big splash and pick up the biggest stone he could find. Heavy as his heart this stone was, but the boy was not about to give up. He lifted the stone up over his head attempting to throw it to the center of the pond where his enemy target floated patiently to be destroyed. His fingers could not grip the stone firmly enough
