The Welsh Libraries audience development and marketing team is promoting this campaign in association with all 22 local authority library services, the Reading Agency and the Welsh Books Council.

SRC Marketing Grants

This year the marketing team is offering a grant of £400 towards a ‘library full of kids’ event. Please note we are not able to fund a contribution towards the purchase of materials this year.

A library full of kids

As in previous years we would aim to hold the kids events on the first weekend of the school holidays (22nd – 25th July) – with at least one library in each authority taking part.

We will also aim to have a Ministerial Launch event, subject to the Minister’s availability – which may be over this weekend or earlier in July.

IMPORTANT - All grants are dependent on actively working with Communities First areas and encouraging children/adults from these areas to attend events/activities. If you do not have a Communities First area within your local authority then areas of multiple deprivation would be acceptable. MALD advisers will be monitoring this requirement during the year.

Why do we want to do this?

to demonstrate the impact of libraries on child poverty in Wales to encourage reading for pleasure, outside of school to highlight Welsh libraries contribution to reading and literacy to raise the profile of the SRC in Wales and Welsh libraries’ contribution to the SRC to raise the profile of libraries in Wales to maintain/increase participation and completion rates to generate media coverage at local and national levels

Ideas for your library event

As usual we aren’t being too prescriptive about the format for your event. You may choose to close the library to unaccompanied adults, allow children to issue books, start a children’s book group, tell some stories, invite an author, put on some entertainment, etc.

ROALD DAHL – Imagine That!World Book Day, 3 March, saw the launch of a new theatre in education show for schools and libraries, celebrating the works of the world’s number one storyteller, Roald Dahl. A joint venture between the Welsh Books Council and Mewn Cymeriad/In Character children’s theatre company, the show forms part of the official Roald Dahl 100 centenary celebrations of the author in Wales.

This year’s Bardd Plant Cymru (Welsh Children’s Laureate), Anni Llŷn, created the script and Whitland-based actor, Chris Kinahan, takes the lead role. Chris portrays an eccentric character named Alf on stage, and presents some of the author’s most popular works to children of primary school age (7 to 11 year-olds).

The Welsh Books Council would like to offer each library authority 2 days (4 performances in total) of the show free of charge (usual charge £250 + VAT per day).

A note has been sent out to contacts in each authority to confirm who would like to take advantage of this offer and arrange necessary details such as suitable dates and locations etc.

Artwork

Generic bilingual artwork has been produced which you can use in addition to the Big Friendly Read branding – for example sticking over pop up banners, on your websites and social media pages and promoting in schools before the end of term.

Conditions of grant

1. A grant bid form must be submitted to the Audience Development Team no later than Wednesday 1st June 2016.

2. The event for the library full of kids must either take place in a Communities First (or equivalent area) or be delivered to people from those areas.

3. A full evaluation report must be submitted to the All Wales Audience Development/Marketing team no later than 30th October 2016 – a template for the information required will be provided with a future staff briefing but the evidence required will include:

Details of the Communities First areas engaged in the event Number of children/adult attending Copies of invoices, etc relating to the expenditure Feedback forms Photos/press cuttings Anecdotal evidence

Promotion

The marketing team will be working with the media and the Welsh Government Communications to promote the Summer Reading Challenge and ‘library full of kids’ events. Press releases (together with local templates) will be produced to launch the campaign and at the end of the campaign – the latter will include information on how the SRC ran in Wales, numbers of participants and completers, etc.

Following the development days organised by the Welsh Books Council last year, there was a really encouraging response from libraries and an increase in the use of Young Volunteers in their libraries during 2015. As part of the support offered by Welsh Books Council to the Summer Reading Challenge, they will be offering free Hac Darllen/Reading Hack materials again this year for all Welsh library authorities who wish to continue or pilot the use of young volunteers this year. The packs are made up of the following items –

An order form was sent to all SRC Coordinators in Wales and The Reading Agency will distribute the packs with the Big Friendly Read materials.

Grant Process

1. Please complete the grant application form (see below) and email to jane.purdie@wrexham.gov.uk no later than Wednesday 1st June 2016

2. The team will acknowledge receipt and ask any necessary questions before confirming that the bid is approved no later than Wednesday 8th June 2016

3. Please provide an outline breakdown of the costs – proof of expenditure will be required with your invoice or evaluation report.

4. A purchase order will then be issued by Wrexham CBC to your local authority for the amount requested – this purchase order will be emailed to you and should be forwarded to the relevant department within your local authority.

5. Your authority should raise an invoice against the purchase order and this should be emailed to Wrexham no later than 31st August 2016 – please ensure a copy of the invoice is sent to jane.purdie@wrexham.gov.uk as well as to p2pinvoices@wrexham.gov.uk as show on the purchase order.

6. If you post a copy of the order – ensure it has the correct address as per the purchase order not a generic Wrexham Council address as this may delay payment.

7. Please also note that there should be no VAT on the invoice.

Need some help?

Learn Together Cymru is a new project recruiting local volunteers who want to help children and young people and contribute to the process of developing their basic skills. The volunteers work in partnership with school, after school clubs, community and family learning centres to offer additional support for reading, literacy and numeracy skills.

Volunteering Matters Cymru complete a confidential criminal record DBS check for the volunteers to ensure they have a valid and up to date certificate, seek references for potential volunteers, arrange insurance cover and training and provide ongoing support.

The project is supported by Welsh Libraries, Save the Children, Booktrust Cymru, WEA Cymru, GwE and Communities First.

There is a bank of volunteers available, some already working in schools, looking for a couple of hours of work a week helping to delivery children’s activities such as the Summer Reading Challenge, story session, arts & crafts, offering one-to-one help and developing inter-generational activities.
