ells is England's smallest city, first granted a Royal
harter by King John in 1201, awarding it the status of a
ee borough. Wells is also an unspoiled market town of
tstanding beauty and extraordinary heritage.
ells takes its name from the springs which rise in the gardens
the Bishop's Palace. Among the city's best-loved features
the spring water from St Andrew's Well which flows through
e Conduit in the Market Place and on down either side of the
gh Street.
Wells may be small but it is
packed with interest, including
twice weekly markets, inspiredshopping, lively pubs, excellent
restaurants and hotels, a
cinema and leisure centre.

A CITY FOR ALL SEASONSThe high points are a year-round programme of concerts in the
Cathedral, the October Festival of Literature and the famous
Carnival of illuminated floats in
November, but Wells beckons
a visit any time because of the
variety it offers.
Among the more popular local
activities are bird-watching,
caving and climbing, fishing,
golf and walking.

Medieval Charters stretching
back over 800 years have granted
Wells the right to hold fairs in the Market Place. Today Wells
hosts a t raditional open-air market every Wednesday and
Saturday, selling a variety of general goods including local crafts,
jewellery, fashion items and leatherwear. On Wednesdays, a wide
selection of local produce is available from the Farmers' Market.
A number of major craft and
continental fairs are also held
in the Market Place, as well as
antique fairs and flea markets
in the Town Hall throughoutthe year.
