About Us

Star Baker 2020: Matt Jergenson

When and how did you first start baking? My first exposure to baking was "helping" my mom make cookies as a kid. I'm pretty sure my primary contributions were sampling the dough and licking the beaters, but it was enough to spark an interest, and I've been baking independently ever since.

What is your favorite thing to bake? My favorite thing to bake is something I've never baked before. I love trying out new recipes. I’ve been

really into cheesecake in 2020. I've made New York style, Oreo, caramel toffee, and tiramisu.

What is your favorite dessert? It's so tough to pick just one, as my sweet tooth really is relentless. I would say that it's really tough to beat an apple crisp that's warm and fresh out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.

Do you have an example of a bake gonehorribly wrong? Thankfully, I haven't experienced any absolute disasters, but I have forgotten to add baking soda or baking powder a few times resulting in a very dense final product.

What kind of bake are you hoping to try next? I've got a few on my to-do list. I think the Russian honey cake looks like a fun challenge with all of its layers. I'd also like to try my hand at steamed buns, as inspired by a recent episode of the Great British Baking Show.

Congratulations to Matt Jergenson on

Bake-Off! His Oreo cheesecake “took the

cake” (pun intended)…
