Wellness E-Letter for Employees of Twinsburg City Schools SEPTEMBER 2011 It is exciting to see a culture of wellness expanding throughout Twinsburg City Schools. Mark Bindus, Chairman of the Wellness Committee, has announced the Committee (made up of your peers) is planning to continue and enhance several popular health and fitness initiatives. ”We will continue the Staff Health Challenge (formerly Mileage Challenge), Health Fare and Fun Run and the monthly Healthy & Wise Newsletter” Bindus commented. Why are we doing all these activities? Kathi Powers, new Superintendent commented: “The simple answer is; a healthier employee is a happier and more productive employee. When we are at our best, the students benefit and the entire district benefits. It is clearly a win/win situation.” Superintendent Powers strongly supports the Wellness Committee’s initiatives and she plans to participate in the days ahead. The Staff Health Challenge contest will now have a nutrition component so you get points for healthy eating. Please see the update regarding the new Health Contest rules and how to sign up. In addition the committee has a bigger and better health fare planned for later this fall (to be announced). We also expect to exceed the 300 attendees in last Spring’s Fun Run. Please begin to think about your personal health goals, what you want to achieve, and how the Wellness events can be an incentive for you to make progress with your health. Remember the Staff Health Challenge also gives you a chance to show “team pride” by working with other colleagues in your school or department to win the Mileage Contest. If you have any ideas to promote wellness within the School District, please contact Mark Bindus or any member of the Wellness committee. Some of the 28 Bissell School employees who contributed to their team victory include from left to right: Eileen Curtis, Kristin Hoover, Cinda Dehner, Allison Dodeci, Mallory Grycan, Judi Leffler, Laura Fedina, Linda Undicelli, and David Boley. Cider is made of washed apples that are slicedand mashed into the consistency of applesaucethen wrapped in a cloth and put into woodenracks to be further smashed. The juice issqueezed out and flows into tanks and bottledas cider.

Whether you choose your cider cool andrefreshing or a hot steamy brew, it’s packed with potassium and iron. This pure nectar has no sugar added and six ounces are only about 87 calories.

Apple cider vinegar is believed to be a naturalcure for numerous ailments from fighting acne, curing bad breath, improving digestion, preventing bladder stones and urinary tractinfections, alleviating symptoms of arthritis,

strengthening the immunesystem, and evenfighting fleas for dogs. Ifyou need a homeremedy for something, there is a good chancethat there is one thatcontains some form ofapple cider vinegar.

One of the best ways to keep from over-eating or making poor food choices isto have healthy convenient snacks so you don’t let yourself get too hungry.Snacks are a great way to satisfy hunger, keep your energy level up and yourmind alert. To keep healthy energy levels going, look for foods that containcomplex carbohydrates like whole grains and combine them with a proteinsuch as peanut butter or low-fat cheese. Prepare and keep snacks handy andavailable.

Prepare healthy snacks in advance so you can easily take them on-the-go.Cut up fruits, melons and veggies like carrots, peppers and cucumbers inserving bags so they are ready to grab and go.

Keep snacks in the car. Some suggestions that keep well in the armrest arenuts, animal crackers, and whole-wheat pretzels.

Have break bites in your desk drawer at the office. Canned fruit in lightsyrup, whole fruits like apples, melba toast, rice cakes, trail mix, dry cereal, soy chips, instant oatmeal, microwave popcorn, and low-sodium broth-basedsoups.

More Grab-and-Go Goodies to prepare for the office mini-fridge include:Hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, hummus and pita, reduced fat pudding andlow or no fat yogurt.

Don’t find yourself at the mercy of vending machines, convenience stores, anddrive thru’s by taking your healthy snacks with you. INSPIRE TO MOVE

Ed KosekCongratulations to Edward Kosek, Assistant Principal at RBChamberlain, for being the winner of the 2011 Spring HealthChallenge. Kosek earned 1000 miles in the contest and bested thenext top performer by 53 miles. (See the Mileage Update for thescores of other Top Performers.)

When asked what it meant to him to win the Spring Health Contest,Kosek commented: “Accumulating the most miles in the HealthChallenge was not a life altering accomplishment. Everyone thatcompeted in the challenge was a winner in some respect. For me, thereward was in each and every workout! Exercising and being able togo out and be active repeatedly on a daily basis is always veryfulfilling. However, the true gratification came in the relationshipsthat were formed while exercising. Going into the weight room or ona run with others and connecting with them while sharing theimportant events in their lives was the true reward. Being able toshare stories and memories while making new ones is what reallymatters. The exercise was an added benefit.”

Exercise To Control CholesterolCholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in your body.Your body needs cholesterol to work properly, but too much in your blood, causes PLAQUE, which can stick to the walls of your arteries or even blockthem. High cholesterol can raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. There areno signs or symptoms of high cholesterol. Cholesterol levels must bedetected with a blood test. Men ages 35 and older and women 45 andolder should be checked yearly, maybe more often, depending on currentlevels and other risk factors. Causes of high cholesterol are hereditary or ifyou are overweight and eat a lot of fatty foods. You can lower cholesterolby exercising more and eating more fruits and vegetables.

To improve your cholesterol, exercise regularly. Losing just 5 to 10 poundscan help to lower cholesterol levels. Studies show that a heart-healthyplan, combining a healthy diet and physical fitness can decrease LDL (bad)cholesterol by 5 to 10%. 30 minutes of exercise per day is a good deal. Try riding a bike with family or friends, walking your dog, playing a favoritesport, gardening, or taking walks to places you enjoy like the beachor an up-beat stroll through the zoo.

Cancer Screenings

HEALTH HARMONY

Cancer SymptomsScreenings can help find conditions that lead to cancer and help doctorsfind and treat some types of cancers early. Finding and treating certaincancers early is more effective and can save the life of you or a loved one. It’s easy to get busy and put off screenings. Once symptoms appear fromcancer, it may have already grown and spread. When your provider suggests screenings, it doesn’t mean they think youhave cancer, remember, screening tests are done when you have no cancersymptoms.Screening tests are used commonly to check for cancers of the breast, cervix, colon and rectum. MAMMOGRAM is a picture of the breast madewith x-rays. The National Cancer Institute recommends that women in theirforties and older have a mammogram every one to two years. Women underforty who have a higher risk or family history of breast cancer should talk totheir health-care provider about how often to have them. PAP TEST is usedto check the cells from the cervix. Women should begin having Pap teststhree years after they begin having sexual intercourse or when they reachage 21, then at least once every three years. COLONOSCOPY is a screeningtest to detect growths or polyps in the colon and rectum. Men and women50 and older should be screened, or those with higher risk should talk totheir health-care provider about how often and when to get screened.

Which tests do you recommend for me

and why?How much do the tests cost? Will my

health insurance help pay for the tests?

Do the tests hurt and what are the risks?

How soon will I learn the results?

If the results show a problem,

how will I learn if I have cancer?
