hero who died towards the end of the Great War in 1918.In full World War 2 Home Guard uniform, this is one ofmany events this year where they are on parade to honourand keep alive the memory of those who took part inprevious wars.
Sywell Aerodrome asked the Home Guard along as theymeet monthly in the Cockpit room to ensure accuracy in re-enactment and organise events.
It was a momentous year as Sywell Aerodrome celebratedit's annual airshow on the 17th August with the theme of the centenary of the Great War, all in aid ofNorthamptonshire and Warwickshire Air Ambulance.Hundreds were in attendance to see aerodynamic displaysfrom aircraft across the ages, with eager anticpation to seethe Red Arrows 50th year formation, and the rare chanceto see a Canadian Lancaster Bomer flying alongside ourown Battle of Britain Lancaster. Unfortunately it was asunny but windy day which prevented the Lancasters fromtaking part, but there was more than enough happening to keep everyone entertained.
The Northamptonshire Home Guard were also inattendance to promote the newly refurbished museum atSywell Aerodrome which has been extended to include a section dedicated to Mick Mannock, our local RAF

The company that just over two years ago took over responsibility
for delivering The Borough Council of Wellingborough frontline
services has also been steadily building up a portfolio of public
and private sector clients.
Wellingborough Norse, a joint venture between the Borough Council
of Wellingborough and national facilities management group Norse
Commercial Services, was initially responsible for delivering services
such as refuse collection, street cleaning, grounds maintenance,
environmental enforcement, public conveniences, markets, car parks
cleaning and security, and civic buildings facilities management.
Since then the company has become fi rmly involved with the local
business community, winning contracts with a range of clients requiring
similar services, including premises cleaning, cleansing, grounds
maintenance and trade waste collection.
“Wellingborough Norse also supports the local economy by procuring many supplies and services locally,” commented Managing Director John Casserly. “The company is providing secure jobs, training opportunities and, through our Buy Local policy, hundreds of thousands of pounds
worth of business for local companies through our supply chain.”
The company is also committed to the ongoing development of
employee skills, and creating fi rst class employment opportunities
including apprenticeships.
So what’s the secret of Wellingborough Norse’s success? John Casserly
puts it down to the company’s combination of public sector ethos and
commercial fl air:
“Wellingborough Norse has already become synonymous with fl exibility and
delivering cost-effi ciency, value and quality,” he says. “We prefer to develop
long-term relationships with clients, sharing goals and agreeing outcomes,
rather than taking the traditional, prescriptive contractor/client approach.”

Wellingborough Market
There have been a number of changes on the market over thepast twelve months. Not all of them popular ones but allimplemented to improve how the market is managed, marketed and maintained.
Marketing both to new traders and new customers has beenincreased with publicity banners permanantly positioned on the edge of town advertising sites, an increased number of adverts placed in trade and local publications, competitionsand events on the market to increase footfall and the inclusionof the market in town centre events.
We have been looking at ways of introducing different typesof markets into Wellingborough too and the Local FoodFestival to be held on the 5th and 6th September will be thefirst of these to test whether this is something that localcustomers would support.
We are shortly to implement an amendment to the townsparking order. The amendment restricts parking for both thepublic and market traders on the market place during 8amand 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Not a popular decision butone that the council felt was necessary in order to remove theparking problems but also to improve the appearance of themarket to a market place and not a car park.
The market is a key feature of the town centre and the council will continue to work with Wellingborough Norse to make sure that the market stays in the market town of Wellingborough.
www.wellingborough.gov.uk/market
Wellingborough’s ancient Charter Market dates back to 3rdApril 1201 when King John granted it to the:
"Abbot of Croyland and the monks serving god there"continuing
"they shall have a market at Wendligburg for one day eachweek that is Wednesday".
The management of the market is now the responsibility ofWellingborough Norse, working in partnership with theCouncil.
The number of market days has also increased and a generalmarket is held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a Bric-a-Brac market being held on Tuesdays.
Many of our traders have enjoyed a long association with themarket and the town. Some families have traded here for oversixty years.
All shoppers and traders, whether familiar with the marketalready or entirely new to it, are most welcome.
Usual trading hours are between 7.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.
Could Market trading be the new opportunity for you?
Starting a market stall is a low cost way of starting a newbusiness, testing your product, market and understandingyour customers.
There are 90 stalls on Wellingborough market, available to traders on a permanent or casual basis. Rates start from as little as £10 per day with rent incentives for permanenttraders under the age of 25.

Good News for our Chamber Members
Throughout the summer the Carlsberg NorthamptonshireFood and Drink Awards have been running to find the bestof our county's food and drink producers and suppliers. The awards look at many different areas of food and drinkproduction and service, including Best Pub, Best New Chef, and Best Artisan Savoury Product.

The latter receives some of the most entries alongsidecustomer nominations. Once entered each venue receives amystery shopper, and all feedback is reviewed to pick thefinal six. After finding out she was a finalist, Ria Chambersfrom the tearoom then had to take part in a bake off andserve 'customers' within a 2 hour timeframe under thewatchful eye of the judges which included Justin Hammett,Executive Chef of the Royal Opera House and Diana Birch,Vice Chairman of the Women's Institute.
To impress the judges Ria presented a pumpkin sconewhich can be taken sweet or savoury, and a Rose Cake allcomplimented by a cup of Ceylon Orange Pekoe loose leaftea from Irvin's House of Flavour.
Both finalists will now have to wait until the 16th Octoberwhen they attend the Awards ceremony where the winnerswill be announced. We wish them both the best of luck onthe night.weatherbys
