Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and thank you for all your hard work in 2014.

Despite many success stories, last year provided many challenges for PDO, not least the significant fall in global oil prices. This has forced us to look afresh at our operations and we must redouble our efforts to achieve our goals of delivering oil and gas safely, responsibly and efficiently while supporting the communities in which we operate.

As we strive to serve Oman by improving production and reducing costs, our In-Country Value strategy remains a defining cornerstone. We are in it for the long term as it is the only way to support the development and diversification of the Omani economy and raise the capacity and capability of the Omani people so that the Sultanate can operate sustainably and competitively going forward.

That is why this magazine’s report on the excellent progress made by our Well Engineering Directorate in integrating ICV into contracts for casing and tubing, wellheads and completions should serve as an illustration of what can be achieved. UWD staff and their colleagues in the Well Engineering Contracts (FPW) team have led by example by not only supporting domestic businesses but also signing deals with foreign ones to set up bases in Oman, leading to new training and employment opportunities for Omani nationals.

I particularly enjoyed the event to launch the new committee for the Young Professional Network, also featured in these pages. It was heartening to see the level of pride and energy shown by members, underlining the importance of the group as a true champion of staff engagement. The YPN provides a supportive environment for members to make friends, advance their careers, build confidence, learn new skills, and communicate important messages and I would urge all those who are eligible to get involved with its exciting programme of activities.

Finally, as we begin a new year, I’m pleased to see PDO break new ground by entering the world of social media. This move will enable allow us to showcase our many strengths and highlights in a fast, effective and engaging way as we ramp up our communication efforts. The Shell Upstream International Leadership team recently visited PDO to learn from the Company’s Lean journey.

The team came with a “Go See” purpose to witness Lean in action and assess learnings so they can make a conscious decision about their organisation embarking on a similar Lean transformation journey.

During the first day, the guests were provided with a synopsis of Lean activities in the Marmul field, lessons and achievements gained through Leader Standard Work, improved effectiveness

of the maintenance teams through 5S (Sort-Set-Shine-Standardise-Sustain) implementation and examples of enhancing operability through First Line Maintenance Lean improvements.

On the second day, the visitors were provided with an overview of PDO’s Lean journey, highlighting key defining phases, and detailing initial steps, realisations, management and supporting systems, challenges and lessons. Later on, the leadership team experienced a Gemba Walk in the Yibal collaborative work environment (CWE) followed by a Nibras

demonstration in the Marmul CWE at Mina Al Fahal.

People and Change Director Ibtisam Al Riyami said: “We were delighted to receive such high profile visitors to PDO, especially since they chose PDO as a good example of a mature Lean organisation to learn and decide on their own continuous improvement path.

“Moreover, the visitors said they were ‘genuinely inspired’ by what they saw here.”

LEAN: SHELL UI LEADERS VISIT

Praise For Firefighters After Refinery BlazePDO firefighters played an important role in

tackling the blaze which broke out at the Mina Al Fahal refinery last month.

Two PDO foam tenders arrived at the scene two minutes after the alarm was raised shortly before 3pm on 4 December to join emergency crews from Orpic, which owns the facility, and the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA).

The 10 men, led by Acting Chief Fire Officer Yasser Al Balushi, spent two hours at the scene containing the flames and damping down. One member of the team, Abdullah Al Fazri, donned breathing apparatus to shut off one of the critical valves as attempts were made to trace the source of the fire.

The blaze, caused by a naphtha gas leakage from one of the pipes linked to the tanks, sent thick plumes of black smoke into the air and staff were evacuated from the BMF and other buildings.

Yasser said: “This was the biggest incident I have dealt with since I joined five years ago. The PDO team performed very well and worked well with the other crews.

“We do regular drills at the refinery although but it is always important to make sure we are co-ordinated as much as possible.

“There was no risk to PDO property from the fire although we were quite fortunate with

the wind direction because it blew the smoke away from us.”

Five people suffered medium injuries in the incident and they have been admitted to the hospital.

Orpic said that there was no impact from the incident on fuel supplies to the local market, nor any adverse impact on the surrounding environment.

Pipeline Infrastructure and Oil Terminal Manager Suleiman Al Maany said: “Our brave firefighters have been rewarded with a Team Shukran for their excellent work on the day. We received good feedback from Orpic and the Civil Defence on their performance and professionalism.”

A review has been launched into the response to the incident within Mina Al Fahal and a series of recommendations is now under review. The outcome of this review is being communicated to all staff.Yasser Al Balushi

A new skywalk has opened making it easier for staff to move between the BMF, the Al Shifa’a mosque and the Al Sahel building.

The link should also cut down on traffic and car parking problems while helping employees and visitors to stay in shape as they walk instead of drive to their chosen location.

Technical Director Amran Al Marhubi cut the ribbon at the official opening ceremony before leading guests across the skywalk with other colleagues from the Managing Director’s Committee, including Infrastructure Director Sami Baqi, who oversaw the 20-month, Lost-Time-Injury-free construction.

Project Engineer Khalid Qarshobi said: “The purpose of the skywalk is to make the movement of staff between the buildings very comfortable in an air-conditioned environment and to reduce the risk to pedestrians crossing the road at Mina Al Fahal.

“Bringing this facility to a successful and safe completion is a great achievement and would have not been possible without the dedication of staff and contractors. Thanks to everyone associated with this project.”

The skywalk, which has two walkway escalators, is 375 metres long (290m from the BMF to the mosque exit), and is 5.5m high. It was designed by the Nicholson Jones Partnership and built by STST, the Engineering, Maintenance and Construction contractor and Orbital as

a sub-contractor, using a steel structure, ALC (aluminium composite) cladding for the internal and external walls and double-glazed windows.

Eight digital screens and Wi-Fi are also being installed so staff can stay connected during their transfer between the two buildings.

The Well Engineering Directorate is pushing forward on all fronts as it embeds In-Country Value (ICV) across the full range of its operations.

The Directorate, together with the Well Engineering Contracts Section (FPW), has led on a range of contracts worth millions of dollars aimed at maximising the procurement of local goods and services as well as improving the capacity and capability of Omani people and companies to secure sustainable commercial benefits for the Sultanate.

Its ICV specialists have not only supported domestic businesses but also encouraged and signed deals with foreign ones to set up bases in Oman, training and employing Omani nationals.

The latest success is the recent award of a contract to First Filter LLC in Sohar for the manufacture of wire-wrapped sand control screens with a total contract value worth more than US$16 million.

Until now, all such items have been sourced from outside the Sultanate but they will now be 100% manufactured in Oman, resulting in high ICV content and Omanisation targets as well as substantial savings over the next five years.

Well Engineering Material Contracts Team Leader Zahran Al Abri and C&P Wells Installed Equipment Team Leader Chris Reijmer outlined other PDO-backed examples of ICV involving the supply of casing and tubing (OCTG) including:• Placing casing orders worth more than US$

30 million with TMK-GIPI’s pipe mill in Sohar for 13,000 tonnes in 2013 and 18,500 tonnes in 2014 – an increase of more than 40%

• Placing a recent casing order worth US$9 million with JESCO in Saudi Arabia, for which the raw materials (billets) will be sourced from local steel manufacturer Jindaal-Shadeed in Sohar (using iron ore from Vale in Sohar)

• Close co-operation with PDO’s long term partner Sumitomo on the successful move of the firm’s supply base for PDO’s operations from Jebel Ali to Sohar Free Zone and the establishment of a local subsidiary in March 2013. Annually over 100,000 tonnes of OCTG for PDO is handled through Sohar Port and Sohar Free Zone.

• Sourcing the supply of locally manufactured glass reinforced epoxy (GRE) for tubing lining applications from OOSC in Sohar. PDO consumes over 3,000 GRE joints a month.

On well heads, PDO’s main supplier Cameron, opened a new Omani facility in Rusayl four years ago and has continuously expanded its local manufacturing and refurbishment capability, underwritten by PDO orders.

Currently, all tubing head adaptors, Xmas tree crosses, tubing hangers and flanges are locally manufactured. And recently, Cameron started importing semi-finished products to have them completed in the Sultanate (whereas in the past such materials used to be completely imported).

On the refurbishment side, the Cameron Omani base has moved towards being a refurbishment hub for the region where equipment such as blow-out preventers are refurbished for some other GCC countries.

Similar progress has been made on completions. In August 2013, PDO awarded a contract to a local company, Integrated Insight Well Monitoring (IWM), for the supply of down-hole gauges (DHGs) with a high ICV content where various components of the scope to be sourced from the local market. IWM has 100% Omanisation. The first successful instalment of DHGs by IWM was completed in February 2014.

In May 2013, PDO signed a US$30 million contract with Schlumberger covering the supply of local manufactured completion materials. Under this deal, all nipples are now locally manufactured and all gas lift mandrels are locally threaded. The next phase is for the local manufacture of side sliding doors and packers which will be used in development wells.

The agreement will create direct skilled Omani jobs involved in the manufacture and supply of the key materials. Furthermore, by the end of the five-year contract period, the majority of completion materials are to be manufactured in Oman.

Technical Director Amran al Marhubi said: “The aim of the contract is to develop an Omani supply and manufacturing capability which can service oil and gas companies not only in the Sultanate but also abroad.

“We hope this deal with Schlumberger will be a catalyst in that it will encourage local entrepreneurs to invest in new plant and labour because we are committed to using them if they meet our technical, commercial and safety standards.

“This rock-solid commitment is good news for domestic businesses which we believe can deliver high-quality goods on time and on budget and is a further extension of our ICV policy which will hopefully see a lot more contracts awarded to Omani businesses in the years ahead.”

The Young Professional Network (YPN) has opened an exciting chapter in its history with the unveiling of a new committee and programme of activities.

There was a ringing endorsement of the group from Managing Director Raoul Restucci who told members: “You are the future of PDO but more importantly you are our present.

“There is so much talent coming to PDO that the YPN can be instrumental not only in supporting and enabling but also unleashing the incredible potential that is out there.”

New YPN Chairperson Rahma Al Rawahi, who heads up the new 11-member committee, formally opened a re-launch event for the organisation, which represents PDO staff who have less than 10 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry and are under 35-years-old – around 2,000 employees.

She said: “I am very pleased to part of a team of hard-working committee members which will

work hard to promote the talents and interests of young professionals.”

The YPN, which started in 2006, provides a supportive environment for members to make friends, advance their careers, build confidence, learn new skills, and communicate important messages.

Production Geologist Hussain Al Ajmi said the group could play a crucial part in entrenching the importance of safety with new recruits to the Company adding: “We want to participate in achieving the big picture for PDO…to achieve a culture where safety is accepted as the first priority.”

The event saw the publication of a YPN survey which identified where the potential of members could be better realised in career development and training, communication and the promotion of teamwork efficiency. The findings, which covered an increased role for young professionals both in the workplace and as ambassadors of PDO, were shared with Raoul.

The YPN is involved in, or planning, a number

of social and sports activities, including a get-together barbecue, a charity and Iftar event, sailing, fishing, bowling kayaking, hiking, football and tennis. And it is running a “Big Brother, Big Sister” volunteer scheme to help newcomers settle by providing help with PDO systems and services, roles and responsibilities, technical knowledge, communication and interpersonal skills.

The group also invites members to submit entries in competitions called Paper Contests on technical and non-technical topics, advises on career-relevant reading material and stages Lunch and Learn sessions.

Issuing a rallying call, YPN sponsor Junaid Al Ghulam, Nimr Cluster Leader, told members that it was the mission of the group to advance communication and knowledge sharing, and to remove obstacles to develop, unleash potential and create value for Oman.

Well Engineering Director Khamis Al Saadi said: “ICV or development of local content has been part and parcel of Well Engineering contracting strategies over the last 10 years with greater focus on services. Currently, the strategies are focusing more on local manufacturing while still maintaining the momentum of creating local competition among local service providers. We are passionate about this and truly enjoy seeing local companies flourishing and rising to greater heights within our industry.”

The directorate is also leading on five of the 15 opportunities so far allocated to PDO by the

Ministry of Oil and Gas after the unveiling of the ICV blueprint strategy in December 2013: • Local fabrication of casing and cementing

accessories• Local fabrication and threading of OCTG• Manufacturing of drilling rigs and associated

services• Water production from brackish water for

drilling activities• Manufacturing of shale shaker screens.

Project Contracts Team Leader Mahmoud Al Lawatia said: “All of the five opportunities are progressing with various degree of success due

to the manufacturers’ interest and anticipated market within the country. They show how Well Engineering is a trusted partner in developing and delivering ICV.”

Summing up, Head of Well Engineering Contracting and Procurement Saif Al Izki said: “Our path and commitment to developing local expertise in the manufacturing and service categories will continue unhindered in line with the Well Engineering ICV road map. Our strategy will introduce new and emerging local companies and further develop existing companies to the next level.”

A full security risk assessment has also been done before the launch and staff have been warned of the possibility of disciplinary proceedings for acting irresponsibly and breaking PDO’s social media rules.

The digital initiative began with LinkedIn and will reduce head-hunting and advertising costs by allowing PDO to access a global pool of talent online. The recruitment team has already begun publicising vacancies, providing important information about the Company and connecting with those who may be interested in working for PDO within Oman and internationally.

The EAD is now evaluating how to expand the Company’s digital presence on other platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp.

PDO has ramped up its global communications drive by launching a dedicated Company presence on Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.

The initiative will enable PDO to highlight important and interesting news, photos and videos in a fast and compelling way to a worldwide audience while interacting directly with social media users.

All staff are being encouraged to support the roll-out by signing up to the channels and sharing and endorsing official content, while being reminded of their obligation to act responsibly.

The External Affairs Directorate (EAD) has spearheaded the move into the digital arena after close liaison with the Information and Telecommunications and Legal Departments and People and Change Directorate.

External Affairs and Communication Manager Suleiman Al Mantheri said: “Establishing

PDO’s presence on social media platforms is an exciting development and will allow us to showcase our many strengths and highlights in a timely and engaging way. We will be better able to connect with our key stakeholders including local communities, influential opinion formers, contractors, non-governmental organisations, potential employees and all of you who work at PDO.

“I would like to encourage you to join us in our social media communities via your mobile phones, tablets and home computers.

“Every one of us has an important role to play as PDO brand ambassadors and we are keen to quickly build a loyal following and fan base across social media platforms.

“In actively participating in social media, we welcome your support and endorsement of PDO and its activities. I would also like to remind you of the importance of acting responsibly at all

PDO needs to identify the right solutions to help address its technical challenges - and Technology Market Intelligence is one of the core activities for the New Technology (UCT) team in PDO.

The Company strategy is to tap into innovation wherever it is and, as such, getting connected to the right technology providers becomes critical.

The team recently launched the Technology Providers Hub (TPH), a market intelligence tool that provides a platform to externalise PDO’s technology challenges with the aim of capturing most, if not all, possible solutions for each posted challenge.

The TPH provides an electronic, web-based, streamlined and managed system for the interaction between PDO and local and global technology providers on one hand and between all technology stakeholders in PDO on the other.

This proactive approach will help technology providers to be aware of PDO challenges and, as a result, focus only on what PDO actually needs. This will reduce the time spent by PDO teams trying to reach global technology providers and sifting through unsolicited proposals that are of

no interest. The TPH will contribute to Increasing our reputation and visibility in the industry technology arena, creating external focus on the global technology market.

The TPH internal users include all new technology stakeholders looking for technical solutions to a specific challenge. Registered global technology providers can see PDO technology challenges and submit solutions. Within the TPH tool, these can be screened and the technology provider can be notified of the opportunity to contact the relevant PDO technical team to further assess their technology.

For staff, the service can be utilised through the UCT team by filling a simple template that captures all the information required to receive meaningful responses. For potential solution providers, it can be accessed easily through PDO’s external website (www.pdo.co.om/tph).

To ensure as much coverage as possible, the TPH website was advertised in four global oil industry magazines covering Asia, Europe and the Americas in English, Chinese and Russian, in addition to the Oman Oil and Gas Review magazine.

Energy conservation, cost efficiency and emissions reduction are all key areas of interest for the Company so when a study successfully addresses all three it deserves the highest praise.

That is exactly what happened to Waleed Al Busaidi and his award-winning research work as a PDO Scholar. Waleed, 25, only joined PDO in July 2012, but has already landed the prestigious Siemens Power and Propulsion Prize from Cranfield University in the UK.

He finished ahead of 200 international students for his work on gas turbines during his Master’s degree in Thermal Power, specialising in Rotating Machinery Engineering and Management.

Here, the former Sultan Qaboos University Mechanical Engineering student speaks of his research and its possible impact on the Company’s operations.Tell us about your study

The gas turbine units are used widely in PDO stations for several applications, including power generation and mechanical drive. However, the highest operating efficiency has been one of the basic requirements to achieve the greatest technical, economic and environmental value. My research topic was titled “The Techno-Economic Study of a Heat Exchanger Retrofit on a Gas Turbine.” It aims to implement the recuperative cycle in order to enhance the performance of the existing machines and to achieve more efficient operation. The original gas turbines are designed for combined cycles so that the pressure ratios are moderate to obtain high

exhaust temperatures. Using the exhaust heat from the turbine to raise the temperature of the compressor discharge air will allow a reduction of the required amount of fuel and thus reduce the exhausted emissions. The findings enable the user to select the most suitable gas turbine model with the optimum recuperator characteristics to secure the greatest techno-economic value. Hopefully, the findings can be implemented in the near future.How can it be applied practically?

The recommended technology in the research project was applied to the operating gas turbine units in PDO stations. I also used the working conditions and operating circumstances in PDO field to evaluate the overall cycle performance. Hopefully, this approach can be applied in the very near future since it does not require a very complicated retrofit strategy. Moreover, gas turbines can be found in different industries so this project can be applied in any relevant and similar working environments.Why did you focus on this particular area?

Rotating equipment – such as turbines, compressors and pumps - plays a key role in the oil and gas industry. The more efficient machines achieve the highest technical, economic and environmental values. Over the years, the highest reachable thermal efficiency of a simple cycle gas turbine is about 46% which is still not enough to satisfy the high thermal efficiency demand. Furthermore, the old machines are responsible for higher fuel consumption and greater exhaust

energy. One way to enhance efficiency is by using recuperation to recover some of the exhausted heat which normally exceeds 50% of the total produced energy instead of injecting it into the atmosphere. The interesting part is that it can be applied to installed gas turbines units to attain lower fuel consumption, emission levels and higher cost savings. This will ensure an improvement in the performance of the old machines.How have you found the experience as a PDO Scholar?

The Master’s study was a good opportunity to gain deep knowledge before starting the practical work in PDO. It was a good experience to discover more about the rotating machinery. I started looking for a way to enhance the working system in PDO stations. This required me to communicate with the engineers at MAF and in the field to understand the existing needs of our operating fields. So, in addition to PDO’s financial support, this project would not have been completed without the collaboration of the rotating engineering team here. Furthermore, the industrial training that I did in the PDO field during my Bachelor’s study was also important to learn more about the operation and production in our stations. What are your career ambitions?

I’m currently investigating the issue of aerodynamic instability in centrifugal compressors which can lead to severe failures, lower operating efficiency and machine availability. After completing my PhD in 2016, I’m planning to work in one of the PDO stations to gain the required practical experience. This will enable me to move a further step towards achieving my ambition of being a senior rotating equipment engineer and making a significant impact in PDO specifically and in the global oil and gas industry in general.

The BMF foyer was turned into a hive of activity during an event to mark World Diabetes Day.

Hundreds of staff watched fitness demonstrations, undertook medical tests and visited stands to learn more about the pressing healthcare issue.

It is estimated that more than 1,200 Omanis died from diabetes-related symptoms in 2013 and PDO has stepped up its efforts on raising awareness of the condition, where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. Seven thousand new cases are registered in the Sultanate each year and many have the condition without realising it.

Diabetes is a major cause of renal failure, blindness, limb amputation and cardiovascular diseases, and is linked with obesity and sedentary lifestyles.

Experts at the six-hour event – from the Medical Department, Ministry of Health, Sultan Qaboos University and the Royal Hospital - underlined the importance of a healthy diet and regular physical activity to treat and combat the illness.

Specialists also conducted check-ups on glucose levels, blood pressure, eyes, feet and weight to help more than 1,000 staff understand diabetes risks, and one booth spelled out possible links between diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease.

There were also contributions from the Finland Osteopathy Clinic, Roche, Pulse Med and Art of Living on various aspects of healthy living, diabetes detection and management, with yoga and weight-lifting work-outs on the central stage.

Managing Director Raoul Restucci launched the proceedings and the guest of honour was the only elected female Member of the Majlis A’ Shura, Jamil Al Busaidi, who expressed her gratitude to the organisers.

South Oman Off-Plot Delivery Contractor M/s Al Turki Enterprises LLC has been commended after clocking up 10 million manhours without a lost time injury (LTI) and driving 69 million kilometres without any road-traffic-accident- related LTIs.

These milestones were achieved despite a working pattern involving driving, transporting, lifting, and high pressure construction and commissioning which all pose various safety hazards.

Stand-in South Engineering Manager Abdullah Al Asmi said: “Operating a workforce of around 4,500 scattered over the South Oman Operational and Muscat areas was not an easy task. But relentless support from PDO and

contractor management, on-site supervision and collective teamwork made this safety landmark possible.”

While presenting the commemorative shield, Operations Manager South Rashid Al Harthy congratulated the management and staff of Al Turki for their individual and collective efforts in achieving the important milestone and urged

them to keep up the same spirit and work towards Goal Zero – no harm to people and the environment.

Rashid also thanked the South Engineering and Operation teams for their tireless support in the management of the contract and the assistance given to the contractor.

OMAN’S INVISIBLE ENERGY

A new landmark book charting the history of PDO’s exploration and production of gas has been unveiled.

The high-profile launch ceremony, presided over by His Excellency Salim Al Aufi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Oil and Gas, was attended by some of the leading figures in the Sultanate’s gas sector.

The 139-page hardback publication, titled “Oman’s Invisible Energy”, is written by former British diplomat Sir Terence Clark and charts PDO’s role in the exploration and production of gas.

It covers key milestones, including the official opening of the Sultanate’s first gas plant at Yibal in October 1978 by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and His subsequent support of the industry’s development right up to the present day exploitation of unconventional gas.

Managing Director Raoul Restucci said: “His Majesty has been instrumental in the progress our Company has made in growing a flourishing gas

operation which has contributed billions to Oman’s economy and fuelled millions of Omani homes, offices and factories.

“From the early days, His Majesty was visionary in realising the potential benefits of a successful gas industry to the country and has backed us all the way in the exploration and production of what is now seen across the world as an increasingly valuable source of affordable, low-carbon energy.

“The new book captures His Majesty’s vital contribution as well as that of thousands of staff and contractors over the past four decades who have helped PDO become the nation’s dominant natural gas supplier, producing around 90 million cubic metres a day for domestic and international consumption.”

The official guests at the ceremony included representatives from Shell Oman, Oman LNG, key figures from PDO’s Gas Board and members of the Company’s Managing Director’s Committee.

Speaking at the book launch at the Oil and Gas

The Minister of State and Governor of Muscat, His Excellency Sayyid Saoud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, visited PDO to learn more about the Company’s approach to supporting the Omani economy and society.

His delegation also included H.E Sayyid Said bin Ibrahim Al Busaidi, Deputy Governor, and the walis of the Governorate’s Muttrah, Bawsher, Seeb, Qurayyat and Amerat wilayats.

The group was given an update on PDO’s In-Country Value (ICV) programme and strategy, which focuses on retaining more of the industry’s wealth in the Sultanate by creating more jobs and training opportunities for nationals and encouraging the growth of Omani businesses.

In addition, the high-level visitors got an overview of the Company’s Social Investment Programme which supports the community by undertaking different projects across health, education and infrastructure, funding vocational training and scholarships for those

from low-income backgrounds and making grants and donations to worthy causes.

External Affairs Director Abdul-Amir Al Ajmi said: “We were delighted to receive the Governor of Muscat and his eminent colleagues.

“They were keen to learn more about how PDO, under the guidance of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, is making a real difference to thousands of lives through our targeted economic and social investment.”

The desire to improve knowledge management (KM) across PDO has been boosted with the launch of three pilot projects in the Central Project Delivery (CPD) Department.

The move, sponsored by KM champion and Oil South Director Suleiman Al Tobi, is an important part of the drive to improve business efficiency by making it easier and quicker for staff to access important information for better decision making.

The anticipated benefits are:• Enabling CPD project teams to have better

access to the right knowledge at the right phases of projects

• Enhancing an information-sharing culture, with improved standardisation, re-use and dissemination of critical information and lessons learned from completed projects such as Harweel 2 AB

• Improving project delivery Lean practices, processes and procedures to deal with highly complex projects requiring new technologies

• Developing a way forward for a KM Centre of Excellence strategy, governance and framework for PDO-wide roll-out, managed and governed by the Information Management and Technology (IM&T) Department.

A new KM team was formed with members from both CPD and the Information Management and Technology Department to jointly design and deliver pilots in the following areas:

Lessons Learned The team has achieved notable progress

across CPD major capital projects including the Rabab Harweel Integrated Project in its bid to improve consistency with the capture and sharing of critical learnings at key stages.

Project Services Manager Salim Alawi said: “Lessons from previous projects are worthless unless they are accessible, communicated and enhanced.”

The pilot has also involved a detailed business requirement definition and process review with the current Lessons Learned knowledge base being enhanced so it becomes the central repository for all lessons captured across PDO. The knowledge base is currently used by CPD project teams and is adding value during audits, project close-outs and preparation for Value Assurance Review (VAR).

Central Project Delivery Manager Shihab Al Barwani said “To be able to produce top quartile projects, CPD must transform themselves from knowledge-hoarding hierarchies to knowledge-sharing networks.”

Capture of Critical Knowledge Here the focus has been on the capture of

sour gas expertise and know-how with the re-launch of a `Sour Hydrocarbon Forum.’ With the support of Corporate Technology Adviser Dr Wail Al Harrasi, the KM team identified 11 sour gas technical specialists across PDO as focal points, and over 40 PDO staff have already expressed an interest to join.

Suleiman Al Tobi said: “With a scarcity of expert skills in some areas, such as sour gas, it is vital that we identify, connect better, promote, reuse and protect our collective knowledge.” The aim of the pilot will be to introduce a standardised approach to good community

management and collaboration across PDO.On/Off-Boarding

To assist with more efficient staff on-boarding into CPD, a range of services has been launched, including practical content to help new hires. This includes a new glossary of terms and an on-boarding checklist available on the CPD home page. A new CPD on-boarding intranet site is also being designed to help new recruits to find the right information and expertise faster.

To encourage participation and the required buy-in, a series of communication awareness briefings have also been delivered across both CPD and PDO, together with a new series of successful technical Lunch and Learns, and new KM branding.

In addition, a KM governance and framework will be introduced across the Company, with the essential building blocks needed for success including the required business resources to ensure successful outcomes, implementation and sustainability. Said Shaibani, Head IM&T, Information Risk Management (IRM) said: “Our aim is to support the business to implement and sustain the KM governance and framework effectively and efficiently to realise the benefits as quickly as possible.”

Suleiman added: “It is important that PDO introduces a practical approach to knowledge management in order to help our staff make better informed decisions quicker with the right knowledge. These pilots will help us to learn the best way to move forward with this goal.”

The Finance Directorate has staged a one-day course to raise awareness and understanding of its role in the business.

The session was aimed at non-finance personnel as well as the directorate’s existing staff and newcomers and offered an oversight of business finance, finance control, contracts and procurement, internal auditing and the State Audit Institution, and legal and ethical matters. There was also an introduction into the vision, structure, deliverables and teams of the directorate.

A LESSON IN FINANCE

IT systems engineer Suleiman Al Hasani is saying goodbye to his “PDO family” after 45 years of sterling service.

Suleiman, 60, joined PDO in 1969 as a 15-year-old messenger on just RO 15 a month and has seen dramatic changes as the Company became an industry-leading organisation.

There were many highlights, not least meeting His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said during his first visit to PDO in July 1970, just eight months after Suleiman arrived at PDO.

He then went on to do a variety of jobs including printing machine operator, key-punch operator, data control clerk, computer operator, data management operator and IT help desk engineer.

Suleiman, who is married with six children,

said: “PDO has changed in many ways, both in terms of structure and mentality.

“PDO is bringing in new ways of working and new initiatives every year and I have seen different technologies and different managerial approaches. For example, I have gone from

delivering paper mail to becoming an expert application engineer in the email system.

“Also, previously, we didn’t have directors. It was just the MD and managers as the staff numbers were much smaller than today.

“I’m glad that I have served the Company all these years and achieved a lot during my time and to have been able to pass my knowledge to the new generation.

“However, I will miss the people I’m leaving behind whom I worked with closely and became part of my family.”

Suleiman thanked the Company for its support in training him after it funded courses in both the US and UK.

He said: “PDO really took care of me.”

The Ras Al Hamra (RAH) development project team has reached another milestone with the opening of the new golf course.

The course was officially opened by His Excellency Dr Mohamed bin Hamad Al Rumhy, the Minister of Oil and Gas, who played the first shot in a four-ball game with Managing Director Raoul Restucci, Harib Al Kitani, Chief Executive Officer of Oman Liquefied Natural Gas, and former External Affairs Director Mundhir Al Barwani, now Chairman of the Oman Golf Committee.

Golf and Landscape Superintendent Brett Merrell said: “With over 18 years in the golf industry this has been one of the best course builds that I have been involved in. Proscape, the contractor, did a great job in turning the design into reality.

“They built everything to the right specification and design, and the RAH team supported me well in areas that I was new to. They helped with the design and build of the maintenance facility, halfway house and other civil works and supported me throughout. It was a real team effort to get us to the opening and PDO should be very proud of what it now has.

“The feedback from players so far has been very positive both on the design and condition of the course. The aim is to make it the best in Oman.”

The nine-hole course, which plays as an 18, was designed by Australian golf player and MBE Graham Marsh from Graham Marsh Golf Design and is Oman’s first floodlit course.

The total par for the golf course is 71, with the total yardage from the back men’s tees 6,600 yards and (5,540 yards for lady players). It boasts 1.3 hectares of putting surfaces, 8,000m2 of tees, 12 hectares of fairways and rough and another 13 hectares of wadis and landscape.

From 1 January, the facility is open seven days a week up to 10pm at night for committed golf club members only who can also invite guests to play for a fee. It is hoped it will be fully open for PDO members and associates in March.

The team is now working on a design for a new club house with construction due to start on the site of the old PDO School.

Sustainability has been a key factor and the golf course is being watered with treated sewage effluent. There has also been a strong focus on tree conservation, with the transplanting of over 300 trees – mostly washingtons, date palms, neems and conacarpus - on site from within the wider RAH area.

The RAH team has conducted an extensive tree and plant Identification exercise to retain all trees and palms for future use, not only on the course but also within the new housing, school and mosque projects.

الصركة رائعا وعمل بصكل جيد مع الفرق االأخرى".

واأصاف: "مع اأننا جنري تدريبات منتظمة يف املصفاة اإال

اأنه من املهم دائما التاأكد من اأننا ننصق جهودنا بقدر االإمكان.
