WELL DONE ROSIE

Year 8 student Rosie recently joined around 150 international runners and 500 local runners in Sierra Leone for the sixth Sierra Leone Marathon. She is one of only four people to have have participated in all six races (in her first race she was 8-years-old) and she is one of only a handful of western children to have participated in the rub. Together with other runners she helped raise nearly £12,000 for the charity Street Child – the organisation helps to educate children in Sierra Leone. Rosie is pictured with her father. RC

BY NATASHA & IDILLast Friday (16 June) the second half of Year 9 went on their Geography fieldtrip to Kew Gardens. The location was perfect as we have been studying ecosystems and tropical rainforests this year. On ar-rival we were split into small groups and we visited some of the main attractions, including the rock garden, ‘The Hive’ and the Treetop walkway. We enjoyed the lat-

ter as it was interesting to see the canopy from above. After lunch we made a quick visit to the gift shop before moving on to our afternoon workshop in the model tropical rainforest. We met our instructor who told us more about the model rain-forest at Kew. We then got to work, meas-uring different aspects of the soil and vegetation cover outside. Once inside we measured the same and compared

the differences between the deciduous woodland and the tropical rainforest. Af-terwards, we went off in groups to study separate plants - our group was given the Cacao plant and we made a presenta-tion to show the rest of the groups. We then listened while each group presented their plants. It was a great day and really interesting to put what we had learnt into context.

We love to highlight the various achieve-ments, activities and goings on of Old Ema-nuels (OEs) around the world, but this time we're staying close to home. We are delighted to feature Upper Sixth student Lauren who will become an OE when she finishes her A-Levels in a couple of weeks. Who knows how she finds the time… but Lauren runs a successful fitness website and blog which covers all aspects of health, food, mixed with her own thoughts on diet and exercise. It offers the complete package on how to live a full and healthy life (we promise to start tomorrow). Lauren started blogging when she was 15 and we recommend you look at her website and writing; there will be very few 18-year-olds producing such professional and observant opinions ranging from health, yoga, weights, food, diet to how to enjoy work-ing out. She also conducts interviews with well-known healthy living personalities and has many other clever features on the site. Lauren’s website can be found at wwwthewholesomehunter.com Brilliant stuff. 1ST XI V KINGSTON GRAMMARFINAL SCORE: WON BY 82 RUNSBY SINANHaving won the toss we opted to bat first to avoid the heat. Openers Nancy and Robbie got us off to a fantastic start - Nancy top scoring with 49. Some power-ful striking from Will towards the end of the innings allowed us to post a competi-tive total of 177-6 in 30 overs. We bowled well at the start of the innings - openers Ivan and Billy ensured the opposition weren't able to score quickly or easily. At drinks we found ourselves in a decent position as the opposition were 58-2. However, a fantastic spell of bowling from Robbie ensured we killed the game early. His four wickets for eleven runs in six overs allowed us to collapse their mid-dle order. This meant they fell well short of the target and we bowled them all out for 95 runs. This was a good result for us as it showed strong performances in all aspects of the game.

2ND XI V KINGSTON GRAMMAR 1ST XIFINAL SCORE: LOST BY 14 RUNS| BY JOEGORDONOur 2nd XI hosted a T20 fixture against Kingston Grammar’s 1st XI. We lost the toss and found ourselves being baked on the hot field. An early break through by opening bowlers Robbie and Matt saw the visitors off to a slow start. Their captain (95) batting at 3 steadied the ship and took the battle to us. There were regular wickets at the other end as KGS raced to 177 for 9 from their 20 overs. Captain Joe was the pick of our bowlers with 3-22. In response our batsmen faced the daunt-ing prospect. Robbie (39 off 39 balls), Sam (26 off 18 balls), Matt (26 off 15 balls) and Henry (19 off 15 balls) made this a close competition. Sam was unlucky to be out to a tremendous catch after hitting the ball very hard through (well nearly) mid-wick-et. Eventually Emanuel fell 14 short at 163 for 9 off their overs. It was an enjoyable match and a great effort against a 1st XI. Well done all.

U12B V KINGSTON GRAMMAR FINAL SCORE: WON BY 8 WICKETSBY ETHANThis was a comfortable win thanks to Jamie and Ethan. We started off by winning the toss and bowling. We got an early breakthrough thanks to Ben trapping the opening batsmen LBW. Then followed Jamie who got a brilliant wicket. Jamie ended the game with three wickets and a maiden. There were wickets contributed by Ethan, Harvey, Jack and Ben. We were then ready to go into bat, chasing a small total of 72 - we went out confident in our technique. Ethan got off to a solid start and batted through the innings finishing top scorer with 19* with helpful support from Jack and Fergus. We finished off the batting in 15 overs after only losing three wickets.

U14 V COLFE’SFINAL SCORE: LOST BY 75 RUNSBY MAXWe started strong with Fred bowling amazingly. Elliot and Charlie also bowled well. Our fielding was sharp and we man-aged to get a run out from a good throw. Although we were missing some valuable players we still put up a good bowling line up. In the end of their innings they got to a total of 114. It was a total that we could get but we would need to bat well. Our wickets fell quite rapidly, but there was still a chance from Fred, who showed promising signs of doing well. But the total became too much for us and we didn’t manage to get to their total. Unfor-tunately, were are out of the cup.

U12B V WIMBLEDON COLLEGEFINAL SCORE: WON BY 5 WICKETSBY JAMIE SINCLAIRAfter winning the toss we chose to bowl. We made a good start from Ben Frost and Thomas Mitchell with a wicket each and few runs given away. Ethan Wirasinha and Jack Bailes then bowled the next the four overs, getting a wicket each. Then the runs began to start com-ing from Wimbledon. However, there were some stand out performances from Jamie Sinclair (with a maiden) and Otto Hobden with great spin. There were great catches from Zeeshan Islam and Ben Horley. Then we were into bat. It was a slow start with many overs going by and the run count going slowly up. However, due to our bowling, the run was enough. Jack got out and it was Harvey Cameron and Jamie in. We needed 19 of 18 balls. After consistent batting from Harvey and outstanding batting from Jamie (although two catches were dropped), we needed 3 of 8. Jamie was facing, and then out of the bag, came a fantastic four. It won us the game with Jamie getting man of the match.

U12A V KINGSTON GRAMMARFINAL SCORE: WON BY 2 WICKETS.BY ANDREWAfter winning the toss we decided to bowl first and immediately put pressure on the KGS opening batsman. Ben and Emily bowled tight overs and Emily was rewarded with an early breakthrough. More good bowling came from Matt and Zachary with both rewarded with wickets - Zachary getting a spectacular caught and bowled. Jacob and Max added to the pressure as our bowlers restricted KGS to 99 for 5. We started our batting with great intent with Tom and Ollie scoring quick runs with several fours from Tom who scored 21. Unfortunately, we put pressure on ourselves being reduced to 27 for 3. The recovery was led by Mattwho played sensibly and got us back on track scoring 19. He was assisted by Andrew with a solid partnership. That

U12A V COLFE’S FINAL SCORE: WON BY 136 RUNSMATTHEW PILKINGTONOn a lovely morning we won the toss and choose to bat. Tom Reid and Jacob Em-ler were retired on 50 with a great part-nership. Hal Kennedy came in and hit a handy 38 off 20 balls. Ben Winnick and Emily Howcroft took out the top order rapidly with five wickets between them. Hughie Blackburn got his first stumping from some great spin from Zach Hamp-ton. It was an impressive performance from Emanuel.

U13A VS KINGSTON GRAMMARFINAL SCORE: WON BY 8 WICKETSThe team travelled in both hope and ex-pectation to Kingston Grammar after hav-ing won five of our last six matches. After losing the toss and being asked to field, we got off to a very poor start conced-ing a mammoth 38 runs off the first four overs with extras in particular impressive for the first time in a while. However, birthday boy Dafydd took an impressive high catch before being brought into the attack and taking four wickets for just eleven runs to celebrate in fine style. Bowling in tandem with fellow spinner Matthew, the opposition’s momentum was checked and they were kept to 107-8. Chasing, we got off to a powerful start running hard between the wickets on a slow outfield, however were driven over the line by 50* from Luke Johnston who timed his innings to perfection taking himself to a half century as he scored the winning runs. WGD

U14A V KINGSTON GRAMMARFINAL SCORE: WON BY 30 RUNSBY BILLYWe batted first and did well blocking out the first few overs. But then, one of our openers got out and the next wicket fell soon after. But the innings was then stabilized by Jude getting a solid 24 runs. The rest of the batsmen also pitched. We ended up with 140 runs off 25 overs which was a solid score. We then went into bowl and took and early wicket through Fred. We started well in fielding with our morale high and our fielding reasonably sharp. We kept them down to 37 after about half the innings. Suddenly, after a short break they came out with a bang, playing a lot more aggressively but we shut them down with good bowling from Elliot and Max. They ended up with around 105. Overall our performance was good, there were a few fielding mistakes but our morale and energy was outstand-ing throughout.

U12A V WIMBLEDON COLLEGE FINAL SCORE: WON BY 26 RUNSBY ZACHARYWe batted first and lost two early wickets, but then racked up a few runs after that and then crumbled as we lost three wick-ets in 15 runs. We had a poor platform for the tail end batters to try and work with, however we managed to push it up to 121 by the end of the innings. We finished the batting with 121-9. Players who bat-ted well were Zachary, Jacob and Ollie. We opened our bowling fiercely taking

CRICKET some great wickets. On the other hand, our fielding was poor with an incredibly large amount of misfields. We were loud in the field and then we quietened down causing less pressure to be on the bats-men than in previous games. We took three wickets in quick succession. That was followed by a dry spot which was broken by a brilliant wicket which sent the bails flying. The players who fielded and bowled particularly well were Jacob, Hughie and Emily.

was broken when Matt lost his wicket. We knew we were on the back foot and had to try and start hitting big. Unfortunately, this led to the fall of a number of wickets. Zachary Hampton joined Andrew at the wicket and together they were able to add quick and vital runs. Andrew falling for 25. A nail-biting last over as Ben hit the winning runs with Emanuel winning by two wickets.

ROWING: THAMES VALLEY PARK REGATTA The senior boys were represented by 3 crews at the Thames Valley Park Regatta: Jake in J17 1x, Daniel in J16 1x, and b Jacob, s Michael in J16 2x. Jake came third in his heat behind representatives from Reading RC and Henley RC, with only a little over a length covering all three crews. Daniel did very well to come second in his heat against a local sculler from Reading RC, again by only a length, but beating a sculler from Windsor Boys School. Jacob and Michael also did very well to come second in their heat to a double from Kingston RC but had the satisfaction of easily beating the double

from Dulwich College. In fact all three crews were only beaten by club rather than school crews. BY RICHARD MARRIOTT (COACH)

With its traditional side-by-side knockout over a 500m sprint course, compared to the 2000m multi-lane racing at Eton Dorney, Thames Valley Park Regatta was certainly looked forward to with lots of anticipation by a big contingent of Year 9 and Year 10 boys and girls. Unfortunately, despite some excellent close racing and beating some good opposition in the process, we ended up with most of our crews knocked out in the preliminary

rounds. Those that did make it through to the finals, came away ultimately disap-pointed. The J15 coxed four of Tom, Leo, Guy, James and Joe beat both Dulwich College and Great Marlow School in their heat of J15A Coxed Fours, and although overlapping Norwich and Bedford Schools for the majority of the final, still finished in third place. Despite the disap-pointment of no trophies to show for their efforts, the warm sunny conditions and huge parental support made for an enjoyable end to the 2016-17 season for the Emanuel rowers. DMC

U14B V KINGSTON GRAMMARFINAL SCORE: DRAWBY SAMWe batted first with a total of 98. Charlie had a good game starting off the batting order. He also did well in bowling, pick-ing up a few wickets. We fielded pretty averagely until the last over, where they needed 3 of 6 balls to win. We managed to keep them at bay with good bowling by Will, who kept a cool head under the stress.

U12 GIRLS V GODOLPHIN & LATYMERFINAL SCORE: 141-146 LOSSBY EMILYWe played well but unfortunately lost by one wicket in the final over. Stand out performance goes to Olivia who took two outstanding catches. We bowled very well but, as the bounda-ries were so small, they scored many fours and sixes. The team batted well but we were bowled out a few times. It was a decent effort and we can still be proud of our effort. We learned a lot from this performance. Photo below.
