LIFE SATISFACTION INDEX

Chile today:

• Multidimensional nature of people’s well being.

• Traditional indicators are not enough.

In 2011 we started measuring Life

Satisfaction.

3

LIFE SATISFACTION INDEX

• Question introduced in our National Household Income Survey, applied every year.

• Answered by every person 15+ years.

“On a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is completely unsatisfied, and 10 is completely satisfied,

how satisfied are you with your life?”

POLICY MAKING CHALLENGES IN THE MEANTIME

10

• How can we take into account the multidimensional nature of people’s well being without a well being indicator?

• Is there another way to know what is important to people and why it matters to them?

POLICY MAKING CHALLENGES IN THE MEANTIME

11

1. Recently created Ministry of Social Development (2011):

– Individual needs at the center.

– Integral view of the individual as opposed to a “sectoral” view.

– In charge of the inter-ministry coordination of social policy.
