Feature Product... All-State Stud Plus®
for Removal of Broken Studs, Snapped Drills or TapsStud Plus is a unique metal working electrode that provides a low cost method of removing broken studs, bolts or taps from holes without any damage to the threads or base metal Works with any common DC or AC stick welding machine
Procedures1 Select the correct electrode size from the table below Set the welding current on your DC or AC
stick welding machine For DC machines, put the electrode connections on the + terminal2 Strike an arc precisely at the center of the broken stud and begin build-up Take your time Continue
re-striking “dead center” on the built-up material (see Figure 2) Caution: Striking the arc and welding the build-up off center will cause the stud to be welded to sides of cavity. Do not overheat
3 Before building up the deposit above the top of the cavity, allow weld deposit to cool This precaution will help avoid welding the deposit to top edges of the cavity
4 Carefully chip away only the top center of the slag (glass like material) Build-up enough deposit above the top edge of the cavity to be able to weld a nut and washer to the deposit without welding them to edges of your part
5 Allow deposit to cool slightly Weld a washer and nut of the same or smaller size to the built-up column of metal at the center of the deposit (see Figure 3) Caution: Do not weld nut and washer to part edges.
6 Allow assembly to cool before using a wrench or other appropriate tool to unscrew the broken part If there are any problems removing the broken part, the weld deposit build-up was probably improperly centered in cavity (see Figure 2)
7 Slag is easily chased from cavity by using a tap
Cavity Diameter Electrode Size Recommended Amperages
up to 3/8” (95mm) use 3/32” (24mm) 50 - 75 amps
