Ameron Water Transmission Group (WTG) is one of the largest manufacturers of steel pipe products in the Americas.

• Strength – Steel has substantial inherent beam strength and can resist dead and live loads in combination with the bedding materials.

• Corrosion Resistance – American Water Works Association (AWWA) approved interior linings and exterior coatings applied during manufacturing provide lasting corrosion protection.

• Fittings – Steel pipelines include a wide variety of fittings and custom fabricated components to meet all special project requirements. Fittings can be fabricated to match your project’s unique situation.

• Adaptability – Steel pipe provides a high degree of flexibility due to ease of cutting, adjustments and welding on the project site.

• Longer Laying Lengths – The inherent strength allows time and money savings by installing longer lengths of pipe; standard pipe lengths are available from 40 feet to 60 feet.

Ameron WTG has supplied over 5,000 miles of welded steel pipe (WSP) in diameters ranging from 18” to over 144”, thicknesses up to 1.25”, and for operating pressures up to 500 psi.

WSP has provided long-term water and wastewater conveyance solutions for over 150 years. Typical projects include high-pressure and gravity water transmission and distribution lines, inverted aqueduct siphons, sewer force mains, irrigation systems, power plant cooling water systems, sewer outfalls, drains, culverts, trenchless applications, penstocks for hydroelectric generating plants, and large diameter pipe pilings.

Why Welded Steel Pipe?• High Strength/Light Weight – Steel is very light relative to

its strength and durability, making it extremely versatile. Steel pipe’s light weight allows for long distance shipping and economy of installation.

• Performance – Steel pipe can be designed to withstand very high operating and transient pressures, and is capable of handling full thrust conditions.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) can be performed to check welds.

Quality AssuranceQuality is measured and maintained daily by the quality assurance staff and laboratory at each facility. QA/QC personnel are independent of the manufacturing staff to ensure accurate and independent assessments.

WTG’s manufacturing facilities are ISO 9001, Steel Plate Fabricators Association (SPFA) and NSF certified. These accreditations verify that Ameron’s design and fabrication processes meet or exceed the industry standards. Manufacturing staff includes ASME and AWS certified welders. Members of the Quality Control staff have various levels of ASNT, ACI, NACE and AWS certifications.

Ameron design of welded steel pipe exceeds national standards Our WSP is designed and manufactured to meet or exceed the requirements of the applicable AWWA, ASTM, ASME and API standards.

Ameron manufactures WSP in standard diameters up to 144”, thicknesses up to 1.25”, standard laying lengths up to 60 feet and operating pressures up to 500 psi. Special designs are available for larger diameters, greater thicknesses, various lengths and greater operating pressures. Ameron provides a variety of coatings and joint configurations to meet your specific project requirements. Custom designs and fabricated fittings include elbows, tees, wyes, reducers, closures, valve connections, manways, and other appurtenances. The Ameron technical support team is available to provide assistance with the design of your pipeline and address any questions that may arise.

Welded Steel Pipe is designed for internal pressure using the Barlow Hoop Stress Formula. A built-in safety factor of 2 is achieved since the yield strength of the steel is limited to 50%. WSP as a flexible pipe is designed to limit pipe deflection on based external loads using the Iowa Equation. For handling purposes, minimum wall thickness is considered to ensure limited deflection and damage during pipe handling or transportation. These equations and further explanations of them can be found in the American Water Works Association Manual M11 which is an excellent source of information for the design professional. WSP is manufactured from steel coils formed helically and welded into cylinders or from steel plate that is rolled and longitudinally welded into cylinders.

Steel plate is rolled and welded to form a cylinder.

Complex fittings can be designed and made to your unique project requirements.

Ameron offers a wide array of linings and coatingsAmeron offers a choice of interior linings and exterior coatings for welded steel pipe that range from our standard cement mortar to painted linings and coatings.

Pictured here are the options Ameron has available for welded steel pipe.

Cement Mortar Lining

Ameron provides cement mortar lining has a successful service history dating back to the late 1800’s. It is the most common lining specified for steel pipe and fittings in the water transmission market and is applied in accordance with AWWA C205. Cement mortar provides corrosion protection due to the highly alkaline environment produced by portland cement which passivates the interior metal surface of the pipe. Cement mortar lining provides a smooth, densely compacted, durable inner surface with exceptional long-term flow characteristics and is in compliance with NSF 61.

Epoxy Lining

Ameron applies epoxy lining per AWWA C210 and epoxy manufacturer’s recommendations as an alternate to cement mortar lining when extreme conditions are encountered. These include high pressure fluctuations in penstocks, temperature fluctuations in above ground pipelines, or aggressive waters. Epoxy linings are available that meet NSF 61 certification.

Epoxy Coating

Ameron applies epoxy coating per AWWA C210 for use on above ground and vault piping. Epoxy coatings are applied to minimum thickness of 16 mils DFT.

Polyethylene Tape Wrap

Ameron can supply cold-applied, multi-layer polyethylene tape coating system per AWWA C214 that has a demonstrated in-service record of more than 50 years protecting welded steel pipe against corrosive soils. Tape coating systems consist of a liquid adhesive followed by a 20 mil thickness corrosion protection layer and one or two 30 mil thickness mechanical protection layers for a total system nominal thickness of 50 or 80 mils.

Polyurethane

Ameron can supply polyurethane coating, applied in accordance with AWWA C222, works well with cathodic protection systems to prevent corrosion to welded steel pipe. Polyurethane coating is mechanically bonded to the steel cylinder and offers excellent resistance to impact and soil stress. Ameron recommends a spray applied thickness of 30 to 35 mils DFT.

Cement Mortar Overcoat

Ameron supplies cement mortar overcoat per AWWA C205 that is applied as a protective shield to enhance the impact and abrasion resistance to coating systems such as two-layer (50 mil) tape wrap, epoxy or polyurethane.

Cement Mortar Coating

Ameron has provided cement mortar coated pipe to the market place since 1930. Cement mortar coating provides corrosion protection by passivating the steel cylinder surface. Cement mortar coating is applied in accordance with AWWA C205.
