HOW MANY TYPES OF KIDNEY FAILURE ARE THERE ?
There are two types of kidney failure
ACUTE RENAL FAILURE (ARF)
CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE (CRF)
In this presentation we will talk about CRF
WHY AWARENESS ?
Because
Kidney failure is a
INCURABLE DISEASE
PREVENTION IS THE ONLY CURE

2. IRF programmes
3. Indian facts
4. The kidneys

6. Treatment
OUR MISSION
Objective of IRF is to work for
PREVENTION, TREATMENT, REHABILITATION,
EDUCATION and RESEARCH in the area of kidney diseases.
IRF PROGRAMMES
- Prevention Through Awareness Programme
- Save A Life Programme- Prerna (An association of kidney failure patients)
- Cadaveric Kidney Donation Programme
- IRF Donor Membership Programme
- Cloth Donation Programme
- Volunteer Development Programme
INDIAN FACTS
Around 10 lakh ESRD patients
Only 2% (20,000) patients get treated
15,000 get Haemodialysis
2,500 get CAPD
2,500 get transplantation
INDIAN FACTS
• Only 500 dialysis centers
• Only 3000 dialysis machines
• Only 80 transplant centers
• Only 3000 kidney transplants take place / year.
• 98% are live related transplants
• only 2% are cadaveric transplants
INDIAN FACTS
Lack of awareness
Lack of infrastructure
High cost
MAIN REASONS OF NON-TREATMENT
THE KIDNEYS
kidneys are PAIRED organs
on the BACKSIDE of the
body
on EITHER SIDE of the
spinal chord
just BEHIND the stomach
INTERESTING FACTS
• Your kidneys clean over 1500 lit. of blood/ day
and produce about 1.5 lit. of concentrated urine.
• Each Kidney contains 10 lakh nephrons.(Nephron is the functional unit of kidney)
• The total tube length in each kidney is about 100 km. This is all enclosed in a space of a fist.
• A person can live a normal life with only one kidney.
INTERESTING FACTS
Our former prime minister
MR. ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE
Has only one kidney
for last 20 years.
FUNCTIONS OF KIDNEY
Removes wastes
Balances body fluid
Controls blood pressure
Helps make red blood cells
Keeps bones healthy
SYMPTOMS OF KIDNEY FAILURE
..Swelling of eyes and ankles
..Blood in urine
..Change in frequency of urination
..Skin Itching
..Headache/ Nausea / Vomiting
..Lower back pain
..Uncontrollable Blood pressure
WHY KIDNEYS FAIL ?
1. High blood pressure
2. Diabetes
3. Glomerulonephritis (infection)
4. Overdose of drug
5. Kidney stones
6. Congenital causes
7. Failure due to accidents
PREVENTION - The Only Cure
1. Liberal water intake
2. Proper treatment of diabetes
3. Regular control of hypertension
4. Full check up of kidney stones
5. Avoid too much spicy food & salt
6. Precaution : Hereditary chances
Prostate (males)
UTI (females)
PREVENTION - The Only Cure
7. If parents have blood pressure/Diabetes, then children must check BP/Diabetes/Urine every year after the age of 25.
8. Inflammation of kidney must be taken seriously and treated immediately.
9. Protein in urine must be controlled & treated.
10. If persons age is below 30 years and is having
hyper tension, it can be because of kidneys.
TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES
Haemodialysis Peritoneal Dialysis
Transplantation
OR
HAEMODIALYSIS
PERITONEAL DIALYSIS
TRANSPLANTATION
CADAVER KIDNEY DONATION
(CKD)
where kidney of brain dead person
is donated to kidney failure patient
Jivandaan programme
• To spread awareness about CKD.
• To convince brain-dead patient’s relative for CKD.
VERY CHEAP TO PREVENT EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO TREAT
1. HAEMODIALYSIS ( H.D.)
Rs. 15,000 per month
2. CONTINUOUS AMBULATORY PERITONEAL DIALYSIS (C.A.P.D.)
Catheter Implant Expense: Rs. 10,000 - 50,000 Recurring : Rs. 14,000 - 25,000/ mth
3. TRANSPLANTATION (Tx)Transplant Expenses : Rs. 3 lakhRecurring : Rs. 7,000 / month
• By implementing the simple rules
(presented earlier)
• By taking Mediclaim
Mediclaim reimburses
Haemodialysis
C.A.P.D. starting expenses
Transplant starting expenses
