PRAYER REQUEST/SOLICTUD DE ORACÍONES
First Reading Is 55:1-11
Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread, your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heed-fully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David. As I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of nations, so shall you summon a nation you knew not, and nations that knew you not shall run to you, because of the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, who has glorified you. Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked man his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.
Primera Lectura Isaías 55, 1-11
Esto dice el Señor:/”Todos ustedes, los que tienen sed,
vengan por agua;/y los que no tienen dinero,/vengan, to-
men trígo y coman;/tomen vino y leche sin pagar./ ¿Por
qué gastar el dinero en lo que no es pan/y el salario, en lo
que no alimenta? Escúchenme atentos y comerán bien,/
saborearán platillos sustanciosos./ Préstenme atención,
vengan a mí,/.escúchenme y vivarán. Sellaré con ustedes
una alianza perpetua,/cumpliré las promesas que hice a
David./ Como a él lo puse por testigo ante los pueblos,/
como príncipe y soberano de las naciones,/así tú reunirás
a un pueblo desconocido,/y las naciones que no te
conocían acudirán a ti,/por amor del Señor, tu Dios,/ por el
Santo de Israel, que te ha honrado. Busquen al Señor
mientras lo pueden encontrar,/invóquenlo mientras está
cerca;/que el malvado abandone su camino,/y el criminal,
sus planes;/que regrese al Señor, y él tendrá piedad;/a
nuestro Dios, que es rico en perdón./ Mis pensamientos
no son los pensamientos de ustedes,/ sus caminos no son
mis caminos./ Porque así como aventajan los cielos a la
tierra,/así aventajan mis caminos a los de ustedes/y mis
pensamientos a sus pensamientos. Como bajan del cielo
la lluvia y la nieve/y no vuelven allá, sino después de em-
papar la tierra,/de fecundarla y hacerla germinar,/a fin de
que dé semilla para sembrar y pan para comer,/así será la
palabra que sale de mi boca:/no volverá a mí sin re-
sultado,/sino que hará mi voluntad/y cumplirá su missión”.

Segunda Lectura del apostol San Juan 5, 1-9
Lectura de la primera carta del apóstol san Juan
Queridos hijos: Todo el que cree que Jesús es el
Mesías, ha nacido de Dios. Todo el que ama a un pa-
dre, ama también a los hijos de éste. Conocemos que
amamos a los hijos de Dios, en que amamos a Dios y
cumplimos sus mandamientos, pues el amor de Dios
consiste en que cumplamos sus preceptos. Y sus
mandamientos no son pesados, porque todo el que
ha nacido de Dios vence al mundo. Y nuestra fe es la
que nos ha dado la victoria sobre el mundo. Porque,
¿quién es el que vence al mundo? Solo el que cree
que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios.
Jesucristo es el que se manifestó por medio del
agua y de la sange; él vino, no sólo con agua, sino con
agua y con sangre. Y el Espíritu es el que da testimo-
nio, porque el Espíritu es la verdad. Así pues, los testi-
gos son tres: el Espíritu, el agua y la sangre. Y los tres
están de acuerdo.
Si aceptamos el testimonio de los hombres, el testi-
monio de Dios vale mucho más y ese testimonio es el
que Dios ha dado de su Hijo. Palabra de Dios. Todos:
Te alabamos, Señor.
Evangelio San Mateo 1, 7-11
Del santo Evangelio según san Marcos
En aquel tiempo, Juan predicaba diciendo: “Ya viene
detrás de mí uno que es más poderoso que yo, uno
ante quien no merezco ni siquiera inclinarme para de-
satarle la correa de sus sandalias. Yo los he bautizado
a ustedes con agua, pero él los bautizará con el
Espíritu Santo”.
Por esos días, vino Jesús desde Nazaret de Galilea
y fue bautizado por Juan en el Jordán. Al salir Jesús
del agua, vio que los cielos se rasgaban y que el
Espíritu, en figura de paloma, descendía sobre él. Se
oyó entonces una voz del cielo que decía: ‘‘Tú eres mi
Hijo amado; yo tengo en ti mis complacencias’’.
Palabra del Señor. Todos: Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.
For just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.
Second Reading 1 Jn 5:1-9
Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his command-ments. For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God con-quers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one who testifies, and the Spirit is truth. So there are three that testify, the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. If we accept hu-man testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son
Gospel Mk 1:7-11
This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heav-ens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
4 Valentine’s Day
The history of Valentine’s Day & its patron Saint is
shrouded in mystery. Ancient Rome celebrated a pa-
gan fertility feast in the middle of February for a long
time. But who was St. Valentine?
The Catholic Church recognizes 3 different saints
named Valentine, all of whom were martyred. One
legend is of a priest in 3rd century Rome who defied
Emperor Claudius II ban on marriage. He continued to
perform them and was put to death because of it. An-
other legend is of Bishop St Valentine of Terni, who
was beheaded by the Emperor Claudius II. It is said he
sent the 1st Valentine Card to the daughter of his jailor
who visited him while he was confined. He signed his
letter, “From your Valentine” – an expression we still
use today.
Whatever the legend, St Valentine’s Day has been cel-
ebrated since the Middle Ages. The oldest Valentine
known to us is from 1415 and is kept in an English li-
brary. It was written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to
his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of Lon-
don.
In the US, we began exchanging hand-made Valen-
tines in the early 1700’s. Mass-produced Valentines
was started by Esther A Howland. She began selling
them in 1840 and became known as the “Mother of
the Valentines”. Her elaborate creations were made
with real lace, ribbons & colorful pictures, call “scrap”.
Today an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards
are sent each year – 2nd only to Christmas.
Now, get those creative juices flowing!
We have a Valentine’s Day project for you!
We invite everyone to create/write/sign Valentine’s
cards and deliver them to the Parish Office. We will in
turn, deliver them to our community’s shut-ins and
elderly. Though we are not able to touch each other
physically, we can touch each other’s hearts with a
Valentine’s note.

La historia del Día de San Valentín y su santo patrón
está envuelta en misterio. La antigua Roma celebró
durante mucho tiempo una fiesta pagana de la ferti-
lidad a mediados de febrero. ¿Pero quién era San
Valentín? La Iglesia Católica reconoce a 3 santos
diferentes llamados Valentine, todos los cuales fueron
