The Second Sunday after Epiphany January 17, 2021 ~ 9:00 am

The Liturgy of Word and Sacrament

All the baptized have a calling in God’s world. God calls not just pastors and deacons but also the youngest child, like Samuel.

The story of the calling of Nathanael plays with the idea of place. Nathanael initially dismisses Jesus because he comes from

Nazareth. But where we come from isn’t important; it’s where—or rather whom—we come to. Jesus refers to Jacob, who had

a vision in a place he called “the house of God, and . . . the gate of heaven” (Gen. 28:17). Jesus says he himself is the place

where Nathanael will meet God.

The Pre-service Music

~ The Gathering ~ * The Confession and Forgiveness

BLESSED BE THE HOLY TRINITY, ☩ ONE GOD, WHOSE VOICE IS UPON THE WATERS, WHOSE

MERCY IS POURED OUT UPON ALL PEOPLE, WHOSE GOODNESS CASCADES OVER ALL

CREATION.

Amen. LET US CONFESS OUR SIN, TRUSTING IN THE ABUNDANT GRACE OF GOD.

Silence is kept for reflection.

HOLY GOD,

you search us and know us. You are acquainted with all our ways. We confess that our hearts are burdened by sin—our own sins and the broken systems that bind us. We turn inward, failing to follow your outward way of love. We distrust those who are not like us. We exploit the earth and its resources and fail to consider generations to come. Forgive us, gracious God, for all we have done and left undone. Even before the words are on our tongues, you know them; receive them in your divine mercy. Amen.

HOW VAST IS GOD’S GRACE! THROUGH THE POWER AND PROMISE OF ☩ CHRIST JESUS, OUR

SINS ARE WASHED AWAY AND WE ARE CLAIMED AS GOD’S OWN BELOVED. INDEED, WE ARE

FORGIVEN. IN THE WAKE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS, WE ARE CALLED TO BE THE BELOVED

COMMUNITY LIVING OUT CHRIST’S JUSTICE AND THE SPIRIT’S RECONCILING PEACE.

Amen.

* The Gathering Hymn “O Zion, Haste” No. 397 Stanzas 1,2 O Zion, haste, your mission high fulfilling, to tell to all the world that God is light; that he who made all nations is not willing one soul should perish, lost in shades of night.

(Refrain) Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace, tidings of Jesus, redemption, and release.

Publish to ev’ry people, tongue, and nation that God, in whom they live and move, is love; tell how he stooped to save his lost creation and died on earth that we might live above. (Refrain)

* The Greeting THE BOUNDLESS GRACE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE WISDOM OF GOD, AND THE LIGHT

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BE WITH YOU ALL.

And also with you.

* The Kyrie Eleison (music on page 57 of LBW) IN PEACE, LET US PRAY TO THE LORD.

(Sung) Lord, have mercy. FOR THE PEACE FROM ABOVE, AND FOR OUR SALVATION, LET US PRAY TO THE LORD.

Lord, have mercy. FOR THE PEACE OF THE WHOLE WORLD, FOR THE WELL-BEING OF THE CHURCH OF GOD,

AND FOR THE UNITY OF ALL, LET US PRAY TO THE LORD.

Lord, have mercy. FOR THIS HOLY HOUSE, AND FOR ALL WHO OFFER HERE THEIR WORSHIP AND PRAISE, LET

US PRAY TO THE LORD.

Lord, have mercy. HELP, SAVE, COMFORT, AND DEFEND US, GRACIOUS LORD.

Amen.

* The Hymn of Praise (music on page 58 of LBW)

GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST, AND PEACE TO HIS PEOPLE ON EARTH.

Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father: We worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God: You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

* The Prayer of the Day THE LORD BE WITH YOU

(Sung) And also with you. LET US PRAY:

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, most merciful redeemer, for the countless blessings and benefits you give. May we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day praising you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

~The Word~ The First Lesson 1 Samuel 3:1-20

At a time when visions are rare and unexpected, the LORD comes to Samuel and calls him to speak the divine word. Though

just a boy, Samuel responds to God obediently, as Eli the priest has taught him to respond. This marks the beginning of

Samuel’s prophetic ministry.

(After the reading)

THE WORD OF THE LORD

Thanks be to God.

The Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit own and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. My frame

was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them — they are more than the sand; I come to the end — I am still with you.

The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 Paul helps the Corinthians understand that God has claimed the entirety of their lives through the death of Christ. Hence

Christian relationships and conduct, including areas of human sexuality, are to reflect the reality that we belong to Christ

and that the Holy Spirit lives within us.

(After the reading)

THE WORD OF THE LORD

Thanks be to God.

* The Gospel Acclamation (Celtic Alleluia ELW 174)

Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia.

* The Holy Gospel St. John 1:43-51 In John’s gospel, Jesus’ ministry begins with the call of disciples, who then bring others to Jesus. Philip’s friend

Nathanael moves from skepticism to faith when he accepts the invitation to “Come and see.”.

(Before the Gospel)

THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT JOHN THE 1ST CHAPTER:

(Sung) Glory to you, O Lord. (After the Gospel)

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD

(Sung) Praise to you, O Christ.

The Sermon Pastor Cindy White

* The Hymn of the Day “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky” WOV No. 752 Stanzas 1,2 “I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in deepest sin my hand will save. I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?”

(Refrain) Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

“I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?” (Refrain)

* The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the

Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose

Gospel: John 1:43-51 43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and

said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,

Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of

Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward

him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked

him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before

Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of

Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?

You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will

see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
