A NOTE FROM FATHER ANDREW

Dear Parish Family,

How time flies February is a couple of days away and with it the feast of the Presentation of the Lord in

the temple also known as Candlemas day. This feast day falls on Thursday this week February 2nd.

This feast is celebrated forty days after Christmas and commemorates the presentation of Jesus and the purification of Mary

in the Jerusalem temple. The name “Candlemas” focuses attention on the candlelight procession that is a part of the liturgy.

It became customary to bless not only the candles carried in the procession but also the year’s supply of liturgical candles. We

will begin Thursday’s liturgy around the baptismal font at 9:00am with the blessing and procession of candles followed by

celebration of the Eucharist. If you have any candles that you would like blessed please bring them with you that morning. At

the end of Mass you will be invited to take a candle home as you leave to use throughout the year. We will also distribute

some candles to the Home Bound ministers who will be visiting the sick.

Don’t forget to check into and sign up for our new on-ling giving program. Just go to the website and click on GIVING and

follow the instructions.

On Friday, February 3rd we celebrate St. Blaise, this is the day we normally have the blessing of throats but because the feast

falls so close to the weekend we will have the blessing of throats at all the weekend masses.

“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” Here, in a nutshell, is the Christian belief about the afterlife. We trust

that heaven is open to believers who accept the gift of salvation and follow the way of the Lord, even (or especially) when that

way is difficult! The beatitudes in today’s Gospel give us a program for following the path to heaven. These famous words

offer a kind of twofold image. There are, on the one hand, the beatitudes about what we should do and be: poor in spirit,

meek, merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers. Such qualities are reflections of the nature of God in whose image we are

meant to live. When we embrace and reflect this image to the world, there is no doubt we are walking on the path of God’s

will. Then, there are also the beatitudes about what we are called to endure: mourning, hunger for righteousness, persecutions

and insults due to our belief in Jesus. These are the trials that often beset the life of a faithful Christian—admittedly more so in

some ages and areas than in others. But Jesus makes it clear that even these trials and struggles are a sign that a Christian is on

the right path, not that God has abandoned him or her, but that the reward of heaven lies around the corner. One of the

greatest consolations of our faith is that even when life does not unfold according to our own perfect designs, even when there

is suffering to deal with, even when we do not have great success in the eyes of the world, we can maintain hope and peace as

we await the “reward” of the just. The eternal happiness of heaven will be worth every ounce of temporary trial here on earth.

Looking forward to seeing you on the weekend!

Fr Andrew

January 29, 2017 - 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3

This one confuses people. Replace the word “humble” for “poor” and it makes more sense. People

that are humble recognize their dependence on God and trust that He will provide all that they need.

Unfortunately, for many of us, pride and ego enters our lives and we think we can live without God.

Remember – God first in all circumstances.

ST. V INCENT DE PAUL

The 2017 winter has arrived, the cold weather is here for the long run and the economic crisis continues to increase the number of families coming into our food pantry. We have over 100 families using our pantry on a monthly basis. We need to purchase more food because of the increase and the rising cost of food. Because of these circumstances, we are asking you to donate items to our pantry. We are always in need of all paper products, detergent, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, peanut butter & jelly and canned meats.

REMEMBER THOSE IN NEED

Purchasing Super Market Certificates and "Bread Are Given Cards" are another way of helping us help others. Certifi-cates are sold after all masses on the weekend in the Café( (5% of your purchases benefits our society) Again because of our wonderful parishioner’s generosity and continued support, we are able to help many families get through these very difficult economic times. God bless you!

Worry means to think about problems or fears. It is to feel concern about something bad that might hap-

pen to us. We turn over and over in our minds events that are beyond our control in some hopes of tak-

ing control. Jesus taught very practically that worry is useless. It does not add to our lives and can only

distract us from enjoying what God has given us. In this series we will look at the useless nature of wor-

ry and how to fight against it.

Week 4

Scripture: Matthew 4:12-17

Often our worries are caused by the baggage we carry, unconfessed sin, fear we'll get caught or our own self destructive

tendencies will get the best of us. Jesus calls us to turn from our sin, turn from the self-defeating attitudes and believe

the Good News, repent so we can enter into his kingdom as God's beloved sons and daughters. Leave your cares be-

hind and follow Jesus as the apostles did.

Questions

1. How have your worries changed over the years? What did you once worry about that no longer concerns you?

2. The Israelites had a legitimate concern. How did they mishandle that concern?

3. When have you done something that just didn’t make any sense because you allowed worry to drive your decision

making process?

4. What does the word repent mean to you?

5. Read aloud Isaiah 30:15. What does that verse mean to you when it comes to worry?

6. What are your take aways from this series? Have you reduced the worry in your life at all?

Consider Joining a Small Group This Lent

What is a “Small Group”?

Small groups are faith communities that provide an opportunity for parishioners to get to know one another better in a

unique, comfortable, and casual setting: the home. The groups help participants deepen your faith and integrate it

more fully into your work and relationships. Sometimes we may find it difficult to apply what takes place at Sunday

Mass to the rest of the week. The small group experience enhances the Sunday liturgy for its members, by helping us to

better apply the teachings of the Mass to our daily lives and become more engaged in the faith community.

Sounds good but what does it look like?

The Small Groups will meet in a Host’s home or at the parish once a week for 6 weeks for about 90 minutes beginning

the first week of Lent. Small Group Leaders and Hosts will work together to decide on a day and time for their meet-

ings. We will be using the Lenten Longings program from Renew International. Lent invites us to a time of prayer,

reflection, and conversion. Make a six-week retreat by exploring the Sunday readings of Lent. Simple language and

everyday metaphors steep you in the season’s promptings to surrender self, work for justice, and deepen prayer life.

Each session will include faith-sharing, prayer, reflection, and discussion about a topic.

How do I get more information and sign up?

In early February, you will have the opportunity to sign up for small groups and designate your preference for the kind

of your group (married with children, women only, men only, young adults, etc.). Look for an announcement through

our bulletin, website, Facebook page and weekly email.

2016 Contribution Statements can be requested through our website http://holyeucharist.org/#/welcome/contribution-
