Too cold to be out in

Commentary from a common Terry

So this past Friday morning I was visiting with Cory after he came off his overnight shift. He is a deputy with the Sheriff’s office. At about 6:30 that morning, while on the north side of town, the digital readout on his car for external temper-ature said –35. That’s MINUS 35 degrees. That’s 35 degrees below zero. That’s 67 degrees below freezing point. That’s really cold. He also said that the office had issued an advisory to all on-duty offic-ers to limit (if at all possible) their exposure to the elements. Specifically, they were to be out in the cold for no more than fifteen minutes. Otherwise the risk of frostbite is a concern. It’s just not wise to expose one’s self to dangerous elements for too long. The risk isn’t worth the possible result. It’s not just true in weather conditions, but in life. There is a temptation—mind you, it’s a temptation—to see how close we can skate to the edge. Perhaps not for everyone, but for many. How close can we get to the dangerous side of this world without toppling into the danger itself? How much can we bend our ethics and our morality and still be okay? Is it safe to get that close? Let me make a clarification—this is not about going into enemy territory in order to shine our light and expose darkness. However, we need to be very careful we don’t somehow convince ourselves it’s okay to walk in the dark places under the pretense of shining light. The language of the Bible is pretty specific when it comes to this. We are not to mix the two. We need to stay far, far away from evil and dark-ness and danger. Otherwise, through this exposure we run a real risk of injury to ourselves. We are not just to manage our way through evil, but we are to reject every kind of evil (IThessalonians 5:22).

We are not to simply monitor sexual immorality, we are to flee from it (I Corinthians 6:18). We are not to simply point out evil practices as we stride through them, we are to make sure we do not in any way somehow yoke ourselves to them (II Corinthians 6:14-16). We’re to be pure, not simply tip-ping the scales more to the pure side. We are to get rid of the things in our lives that cause us the most spiritual damage and hurt. Jesus went so far as to say that nothing—nothing– is worth having in this planet if it keeps us from eternity with God. (Matthew 5:29-30). In other words, is it worth it? Is it worth it to expose ourselves to all the dangers of what this world says are important if it also means we are step-ping away from what God has said is most important? Jesus put it this way: “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? (Matthew 16:26) Those are large ques-tions that need to be answered. This world packages itself well. Satan is very good at what he does. But his native tongue is lying. He is the father of lies. Jesus said so in John 8:44. He is speaking from his own character when he speaks to us about this world. It’s how he first approached people way back in Genesis 3. “Here’s what God says. Here’s what I say. Now you choose.” So let this be an advisory issued under dangerous conditions. Do not run the risk of unnecessary exposure to the evils of this world. It’s one thing to have to maneuver in this world because it’s where we exist. It’s another thing to allow the world to define our existence. And our destiny.

Love one another,

Marriage Seminar next monthMarriage Seminar next month——date changedate change

All married couples, engaged couples, dating couples, or people planning to be married some day—

we’ll have a two-day marriage seminar on February 17th-18th. (This is a change from the original

dates of the 3rd-4th.) It will be based on material developed by Gary Smalley and Michael Smalley.

To our Westview family,

Bill and I want to thank all for your prayers, cards, and for the women who provided meals. You all

have been a big part of my continued road to recovery. A special thanks to the Christmas party

singers, who wished us a Merry Christmas via phone! It was soon after my surgery and it lifted my spirits. We are so blessed to be a part of the loving

Westview family. “God bless us everyone!”

In His Service,

Fran & Bill

A note from Terry

about versions

I know it can be a pretty big deal when

the teaching minister of a congregation

changes the Bible translation from which he

teaches. And I don’t intend to cause you

any stress. However, for several reasons, I

have made a decision to begin using the

English Standard Version as my primary

teaching Bible.

I realize most folks use the NIV. I am

not, in any way, saying you should stop

using the NIV. However, you need to know

there will be a few differences as you read

along. I don’t think they are going to be

distracting enough that you can’t use your

NIV. But you do need to know of this

change.

I am not condemning the NIV. I am

simply more impressed with the ESV. The

NIV is based more on “thought translation”

while the ESV is a more literal “word-for-

word” translation. I will explain more as

time goes.

The weekly Men’s Coffee will resume

this Tuesday, the 10th. Swing by the

building anytime between 6:00 and

8:00 a.m. It’s a great way to start

the day!

We encourage you to begin inviting folks

now to this event. We’ll have a registration

process available soon. We will have a

schedule determined by next week as well

as information about child-care, materials,

and meals. Please pray now about the

success of this seminar and our intention

to strengthen marriages and families.

We are in the process of scheduling

teachers for our Sunday morning

children’s classes this year. If you

would like to teach or be an aid

please talk to Amanda Wells.
