Welcome to your 2016 membership meeting. For the nearly 30 years that this Museum has existed, we have dreamed of a water-tight, weather conditioned building of the quality that our collection de-serves. This past January, the Sacramento City Council approved our plan with a new lease agreement which will allow just that.

The new lease requires us to improve the building, but we recognize that donors and supporters of the Museum may not want to contribute to the building’s improvements without knowing

if those funds would be wasted if the City were to retake control of the building. Well, they will not be wasted. We were able to insert a lease provision stating that if the City retakes the building without us break-

ing the terms, they would reimburse us up to $1,650,000 that we invest in upgrades. That is very good news for our future.

At this time, the City Council is not yet prepared to approve the sale of the building to us, although that remains our long-term goal. Our property is part of a historic site where, during the 19th century, riverboats offloaded to our growing city. Today, it is a largely undeveloped site with a patchwork of ownership which the City calls the “Docks Project”.

Currently, the City does not have a firm plan to develop these 14 acres, but does not want to commit to our ownership until a plan is developed. We strongly believe that we will demonstrate our increasing value to the community and have an improved building; the city council will likely agree to include us as part of the Docks project when it comes to fruition.

We will continue to work on the permanent ownership of the building and view this lease as an interim solution that will get us necessary improvements we have been waiting for all these years. So, hold on tight, because soon we will not have to get the buckets out every time it rains, nor have to apologize for it being too hot or too cold. The first step: FIX THE ROOF!

We expect to begin this work in May of 2017. There is more engineering to get done and lots of planning is needed for moving the cars during construction; and of course, a lot of fundraising to do as well. Given that we must do the work in dry weather… May, it is!

This January also brought us a new Executive Director, Delta Pick Mello. While we wish Karen the best in her new career and are thankful for dramatically improving the Museum during her nine years here, we are excited about the new ideas and energy that Delta brings to us. Our staff has been very supportive during the transition and we are poised for great things in our future.

2015 was a solid year for us financially and we offered strong programs and events to support our mission. We forecast an even better 2016 and beyond.

I come to this Museum with great admiration and respect for what has been accomplished during the past nine years. During that time, the Museum was under the direction of Karen McClaflin. She and the Board of Directors, along with dedicated docents and volunteers, formed the strong foundation of a thriving nonprofit organization with a dynamic and exciting col-lection – a Museum that you can be proud of despite the drawbacks of our physical building.

The California Automobile Museum is one of the Sacramento region’s treasures and we are only getting better and better, making a stronger presence in our community, and creating the memories and dreams that come with the history of the American automobile. I followed the growth and development of this incredible Museum over the past several years as an out-sider, so it is difficult for me to fully reflect on a year that I have not been an active participant of. Therefore, I would like to use this forum to introduce myself to you, our members and supporters.

For the past 25 years, I have worked in the nonprofit sector, specifically with Museums here in Sacramen-to. Prior to joining the California Automobile Museum I worked for the California State Railroad Mu-seum Foundation; a nonprofit partner with California State Parks. In addition to membership and fundraising, I headed the Museum and Foundation’s team of staff and volunteers that produced “The Polar Express Train Ride”. Before that, I spent 17 years working for the Sacramento Zoo. As their Marketing Director, we partnered with Sacramento’s regional museums and arts organizations, local businesses, community foundations and donors.

Now as the Executive Director of the California Automobile Museum, I am excited to work with the dedicated staff, devoted volunteers and generous donors to move into a new era for the Museum. While improving our building is an essential part of our future plans, we also need to continue to develop innovative, exciting exhibits; expand our education programs to all age groups; professionally manage our extensive collection; improve our visitor services; and increase our membership and donor base.

We ended 2015 in a strong financial position, with a healthy core of supportive volunteers and professional staff, a reputation as a valued community resource, and of course, our magnificent automobile collection. In the coming year it is imperative that we support and protect our resources – our facility, our programs, our collection, and our dedicated volunteers. We have a big year ahead of us beginning with a fundraising campaign to fix the leaky roof and add an efficient climate control system. As our strongest supporters, we know that we cannot do this without your help.

Attendance reached over 60,000 for the first time in the Museum’s history.

Four rotating exhibits were on display, in addition to 11 car clubs on display and our permanent collection.

Auto Exotica Flash & Flair Mustang v. Camaro Camping in Style

The Museum ended the year with 749 memberships, plus 34 car club memberships.

135 School and Group Tours went through the Museum and 19 Education Classes took place, including a summer camp for children.

The Road Crew took CAM cars out into the community 43 times.

Volunteers logged almost 22,000 hours of service as Museum docents and helping with our Library, Events and Programs, Road Crew, Pit Crew, Detail Crew, and more! 32 new docents graduated from the Class of 2015

The Museum hosted five community events: Beer Week Tasting, Vettes 4 Vets, CAM Car Cruise, our first Tuner Car Show, and the Benefit Dinner featuring Lyn St. James.

October 21, 2015 brought 11 DeLoreans to the Museum and hundreds of visitors for Back to the Future Day.

The Museum took people on five automotive-themed trips; SEMA, Pebble Beach, Capitol Car-rera, Italy and Cuba.

Beer prom on March 4, 2016 We will have some incredible craft brews at the Museum which will wash down the delicious taste of food trucks’ goodies. We will also have a DJ with your favorite high school jams lined up for you to dance the night away. Who’s your date for the prom?

Florida: hot Beaches & cool cars from March 12, 2016 through March 20, 2016We will be making a seven day and eight night trip to Florida where we will be exploring St. Augustine, the Dezer Collection, REVS Institute, Florida Everglades, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford winter homes, and the Kennedy Space Center!

End of the road on March 31, 2016With such praise and admiration for our trailer exhibit, we have decided to commemorate them with a special evening event and allow visitors behind the ropes to experience these beauties up close. We will also have one trailer for photo opportunities and will be delighting trailer enthusiasts with refreshments, beer and wine.

the pickup truck: Where utility Meets the Everyday from april 23, 2016 through September 11, 2016This unique and poignant exhibit shows visitors some of the most popular and iconic pickup trucks from the last century. From farm equipment to tailgating BBQs, the trucks will be displayed with relics from our collective past. The preview event for The Pickup Truck is on April 21, 2016.

Vettes 4 Vets american Muscle car on May 30, 2016Whether one has a car to show or is looking for family-friendly entertainment on Memorial Day, Vettes 4 Vets is sure to encom-pass it all. With a military helicopter on display, music to take you back in time, cars lined up for your enjoyment and some home cookin’ BBQ, we will have something for everyone!

caM car cruise on September 10, 2016We’re back with this Cal Auto Museum staple, but this year we are doing it a little differently with two hours designated for cruisin’ a loop on Fulton Avenue followed by three hours of street fair activities.

Motorcycle Exhibit opens September 24, 2016 Together, the automobile and motorcycle have grown up and changed over the years, but in this exhibit, the motorcycle will be getting all the glory it deserves. Preview event dates TBA.

We have both silent and live auc-tions to bid on as well as an opportunity to support the Museum’s current focus for improvement in our Bid-for-a-Cause seg-ment.
