The Importance of Reading

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. (Dr Seuss)

Reading at home for a minimum of 10 minutes a day, 5 times a week, with the reading record signed by a parent.

Receive 1 Dojo for 5 reads in a week, 7 consecutive reads will earn 2 Dojo points.

Important that they are heard reading out loud and questioned about what they have read within that 10 minute timeframe.

SPaGSpelling rules are being taught in a specific lesson each week, whilst we continue to develop correct spelling across all areas of the curriculum.

Punctuation and Grammar will also be covered in these sessions. This will develop the children’s understanding of sentence structure and feed into all their writing.

Children will be assessed in school throughout their learning so a spelling test will not be conducted.

Learning Heroes

Each week, teacher’s are looking for learning heroes. Children who have been using their learning habits to improve as a learner.

The Learning Hero award has replaced the old star of the week.

Every child will have an equal chance to achieve the Learning Hero award and they can achieve it more than once.

Page 14: Welcome to Year 5 Wolves and Snow leopards Mr. K, Mr. Taylor and Mrs. McK.

Learning Logs

Each child has a Learning Log. These logs are used by the children to record their home learning and to reflect on their use of learning habits during the week.

Children will also bring their learning logs home to complete home learning tasks. These will usually be open-ended and enable children to have the freedom to complete the task in a way that they choose. We encourage you to work together with your child on these tasks and talk to them about their learning.

Page 15: Welcome to Year 5 Wolves and Snow leopards Mr. K, Mr. Taylor and Mrs. McK.

These tasks will usually be set on a Friday; the task will be discussed with the children. Learning Logs will be sent home on a Friday and then due back into school the following Friday. However, sometimes we may give the children more or less time to complete a task, depending on the nature of it. This will always be discussed with the children and the date it is due in written on the task.

We recommend that children spend 10-15 minutes per night working on their learning logs rather than trying to complete them all in one go, however, all children are different and you will be aware of how best they apply their learning.

Page 16: Welcome to Year 5 Wolves and Snow leopards Mr. K, Mr. Taylor and Mrs. McK.

Talk to your child about their day. What has excited them? What have they learnt during the day? What learning habits have they used during they day? How have they used the learning habit?

Reading out loud and talking about the text to a grown up, for a minimum of 5 times a week, 7 would be wonderful.

Encourage your child to become organised and more independent - ready for transition to Yr 6 and beyond.

Maths - the basics! Mental maths, times tables, real life maths.

Home Learning, support your child and discuss their Learning Logs.

BehaviourThe whole school follows the same behaviour policy, which can be found on our school wiki.

Each classroom is set up with a ‘Behaviour Wheel’

If children are showing the appropriate behaviour throughout the day they will remain in the green zone.

However, the desired behaviours are not being shown children will receive a verbal warning. If the behaviour then continues the children will be moved into either the yellow, orange or purple zones depending on where the behaviour has taken place.

If the behaviour still continues after being placed into one of the ‘Coloured Zones’ the children will be moved into the ‘red consequences zone’.

Once here depending on the behaviour children may miss their playtime or have to go and see a senior member of staff. Phone calls home may also be made.

Children can also earn their way back out of a ‘Coloured Zone’ by making the right choices for the rest of the day.

Page 18: Welcome to Year 5 Wolves and Snow leopards Mr. K, Mr. Taylor and Mrs. McK.

Class DojoAll children throughout the school are set up on our Class Dojo System. They have their own avatar and earn ‘dojo points’ for demonstrating learning habits from our Language of Learning.

Initially, when children achieve 10 Dojo points they will receive a prize from the class ‘choosy box’. After Christmas, this will then raise to 20 Dojo points.

Dojo points can be both gained and lost. Please log onto your child’s Dojo account and see how they are doing.

The messaging facility on Class Dojo may be used to provide reminders, however please do not use it as a tool to communicate with teachers. Messages are not secure and we can not guarantee that they will be received daily. As always, if you would like to contact your child’s class teacher, please send an email to [email protected]

PE and Games sessions

Kit - please ensure that your child has both an indoor and an outdoor kit in school at all times. PE sessions can be flexible and children need to be prepared for the sessions.

Long hair (boys and girls) needs to be tied back, all jewellery removed (including earrings) and appropriate footwear worn.

Page 22: Welcome to Year 5 Wolves and Snow leopards Mr. K, Mr. Taylor and Mrs. McK.

SwimmingAll children in Year 5 will have started swimming again this year. The lessons will run up until Easter.

It is important that your child has the correct kit. Boys need a pair of fitted trunks (not baggy shorts) and a swimming cap if they have long hair. Girls will need a one-piece swimming costume, swimming hat and earring band if their earrings can not be removed.

The teaching of swimming is the responsibility of the swimming teachers, not school staff. They make the decisions regarding the progression of certificates and how the children are grouped. School teachers are there to support the sessions.
