A Brief Introduction and Context for the Appointment of the

Director of Studies in Church History and Doctrine

The Westminster College building opened in October, 1899, to replace the Presbyterian Church of England’s theological college in London. This move was largely inspired, and significantly funded, by twin sisters, Agnes and Margaret Smith. They were remarkable biblical scholars and travelled extensively. Westminster takes its name from the Catechisms and Confession of the Westminster Assembly of Divines which met in London from 1643-1649. The Westminster Confession, Presbyterianism’s foundation creed, is housed at the college. Another strand in our history involves Cheshunt College. Cheshunt’s origins lay in the college opened at Trevecka in Wales in 1768 by the Countess of Huntingdon which played a significant part in the English and Welsh Evangelical Revivals. It moved to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire in 1792 and thence to purpose-built premises on Bateman Street in Cambridge in 1914. In 1967 Cheshunt joined with Westminster and the Cheshunt buildings were sold. Many of the contents and archives of Cheshunt are housed at Westminster.

In 1972 the birth of the United Reformed Church saw Westminster take its place alongside other colleges training ministers for the new denomination. Westminster is now one of the four Resource Centres for Learning serving the URC (the others being Northern College in Manchester, the Windermere Centre and the Scottish College). Our brief continues to evolve and expand as we seek to offer education, training and support to candidates preparing for ordained ministry in the URC and other Reformed churches, lay preachers and worship leaders, elders, ministers in service and a wide variety of individuals, groups and churches who want to explore faith and living with us.

But our building had remained largely unaltered and was no longer meeting today’s demands. At the 2010 URC General Assembly a major appeal was launched as the first step towards renewing the building for a new era of service. With over £7 million now raised the building work, begun in June 2013, was completed in the summer of 2014. Teaching and residential accommodation and facilities have been transformed. Lift access to the entire building, and especially the beautiful library, has been created for the first time. New kitchen and administrative facilities radically enhance our capacity to welcome more people and offer even better hospitality. Alongside the physical change is the on-going development of our education and learning programmes and resources to cater for both lay and ordained, from the URC and beyond. These are the most dramatic changes Westminster has known.

We have also expanded the commercial business capacity of Westminster to help financially support the educational vocation of the college. We are developing as a venue for conferences and events, and provide high quality bed and breakfast accommodation alongside student and church use. We are now regularly used by visiting academics and a wide range of individuals and groups as a venue and overnight stop. Our chapel prayers are deliberately advertised and open to all visitors using our building so that our commitment to Christ remains central to

our ethos and hospitality. Westminster stands as a sign of living faith in our diverse and dynamic academic and historic context.

The Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF) represents main-stream church traditions and provides a vibrant ecumenical context for our work. The CTF works in partnership with the University of Cambridge (for whom it delivers the BTh and DTM - Theology for Ministry - awards), the University of Durham (which validates the BA and MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission) and Anglia Ruskin University (with whom we deliver a Professional Doctorate programme). Staff are often involved in supervision for research degrees of our partner universities. There are about 40 academic staff across the Federation, from its nine institutions, providing a rich context of colleagueship within which we work. In summer 2015 the CTF central secretariat moved onto the Westminster site and is now housed in purpose built accommodation.

The redevelopment of Westminster will greatly enhance our relationships with two of our partners in the CTF in particular. The Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide (CCCW) was already based at Westminster and has a very significant library and archive for studies in Christian mission and world Christianity. It is well connected to mission studies centres around the world and offers a wide range of lectures and seminars to help foster greater appreciation of mission in a diverse range of contexts. As part of the development of our building CCCW have moved into new and improved accommodation that enhances their capacity to welcome students and scholars from across the globe.

The Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths is hard at work on a brand new building on our site, integrated with the Westminster buildings. Completion is planned for the summer of 2017. The Woolf Institute is a leading centre for investigating and teaching the current and historical relationships that exist between the faith-traditions of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, with special reference to Europe and the Middle East. Within the new Woolf building will be accommodation for the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, a leading research centre for the interface between faith and the sciences. Sharing our evolving campus whilst retaining their unique identities, these institutions, and potentially others, will work collaboratively to foster a vibrant exchange of ideas, people and resources in a diverse and creative community of learning. Westminster will thus become a significant theological campus and place for many encounters and relationships. We are already enjoying some of the potential for synergy and collaboration.

We are an exciting institution, seeking more fully to help shape thinking about the life of faith and the future of the Church in the 21st century. We want to equip people to minister effectively amidst constant change, and to build up the whole Church as all of its members engage in their many and varied forms of ministry. We are developing particular interests in faith and the arts and spirituality and are seeking to develop an intentional programme of research, in part in conjunction with the CTF, in part in collaboration with wider research networks across the United Reformed Church. We will complete a purpose-built art studio for the use of staff, students and visitors early in 2017 as a further sign of investment in theology and discipleship in creative and broad ways. Our library and archives hold significant collections on the Reformed tradition in Britain that the post-holder will be welcome to engage with.

The post-holder will become the fifth member of a core academic staff team including the Principal, who will help develop and steer the further exploration of the vocation of the college with the Board of Governors. There will be the opportunity for the post-holder to follow their interests and passions as the future

of Westminster is being shaped within its overall vocation as defined by the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church. Our remit and delivery is particularly influenced by the priorities and policies set by the Education and Learning Committee of the United Reformed Church and in close discussion with networks of trainers and educators across our denomination’s thirteen Synods covering England, Wales and Scotland. Duties will be spread across the whole calendar year and include some weekend and evening commitments, especially as we continue to develop the resourcing we offer to local congregations as much as to the academic programmes. It is intended to schedule some dedicated research time for the post-holder.

We are in the process of significantly developing our teaching staff team. New academics have joined us in 2015 and 2016 to teach and tutor in the New Testament and Greek along with the Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew. These posts complement those of continuing academic staff who bring particular expertise in Pastoral Theology, and wide experience of ministry and church life as well as interests in the whole range of theological and ecclesial issues. We are actively seeking to recruit for the newly created full-time post of Director of Church Resource Development who will lead Westminster’s growing delivery of events, conferences and resources to equip the whole people of God in their discipleship and vocations. We expect much of this aspect of our work to have a growing digital and web-based provision, and to include much delivery in local churches and across Synods in collaboration with and through the invitation of congregations and ministers.

This sets the context into which we will welcome our new Director of Studies in Church History and Doctrine as the current post-holder returns to pastoral charge within the United Reformed Church. The person appointed will be a colleague excited by the academic programmes and cohorts we teach within Westminster and through the Cambridge Theological Federation. He/she will equally be skilled in exciting and educating the wider church in the many dimensions and facets of the Reformed tradition in its historical contexts and contemporary expressions. She/he will add to Westminster specialism in aspects of the ways doctrinal and ecclesial traditions shape and form the practices of Christian discipleship and church life, especially within the United Reformed Church. Alongside this core staff team, we are developing a programme of adjunct staff who will bring particular pastoral, ministerial or subject expertise to the life of the college. Westminster is also supported by a highly committed and specialised array of support staff who manage the administrative, domestic and business aspects of college life.

Westminster College provides an exciting and energising context from which to engage in academic practice. We offer the post-holder opportunity to both teach in the academy and engage fully and creatively in congregational discipleship. We have a focus upon initial ministerial formation and education within one of the world’s broadest ecumenical contexts along with teaching for the whole Church. We offer a campus of leading institutions rich in collaborative opportunity. Being a partner of the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Cambridge (appropriately qualified staff are normally appointed as Affiliated Lecturers of the Faculty) places us in the midst of a world leading research department of Divinity, with a highly active programme of Senior Research Seminars and guest lectures. Our links with the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Durham connects us to a top-rated research department in the UK which is actively committed to resourcing and furthering research across theological institutions teaching the new ‘Common Award’. Westminster College, Cambridge: Teaching Staff Job Description

Position:Director of Studies in Church History and Doctrine (DoSCHD)

Responsible to: the Principal of Westminster and, through him/her, to the Board of Governors of Westminster College, which itself is responsible to the United Reformed Church General Assembly. The Governors report to General Assembly through the Education and Learning Committee, which is therefore, in practice, the College’s primary avenue of communication with the United Reformed Church.

PreambleThis job description should be understood in the context of the responsibilities of the Board of Governors as they are spelt out in the texts of the General Assembly 1996, which define the governance of Westminster College. These texts are included in the application pack. Also included are key resolutions of the Training Committee agreed by General Assembly in 2005 and 2006. These confirm but reframe the Church’s relationship to the College as one of the United Reformed Church’s Resource Centres for Learning (RCL). Finally, to set this post in context, the 2010 resolutions of General Assembly relating to Westminster’s Development and Appeal are included which indicate ways in which the college has sought to transform its facilities and expand its provision as an RCL.

Further Particulars:This is a central teaching post for Westminster College, the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF) and the United Reformed Church.

We are searching for a scholar and teacher with a passion for assisting church and academy in exploring Church history and doctrine, and especially the Reformed tradition, as they shape the faith, practice and mission of the Church today. Applicants must be educated to PhD level and be able to demonstrate on their application form that their PhD has either been awarded, or is close to being awarded. In the latter case any offer of this post may well be made subject to successful awarding of a candidate’s PhD. We would be particularly interested in applications from individuals whose areas of expertise include any of the following: public theology and apologetics; contemporary influences of the traditions forming the United Reformed Church (Presbyterian, Congregational, Churches of Christ); relating doctrine to worship and preaching; mission in the light of Reformed influences and resources; relating traditions and sources to contemporary spirituality and Christian formation. Candidates with other specialisms will be considered.

You will belong to a member church of the World Council of Churches and have a deep understanding of, and sympathy for, the Reformed theological tradition. You will have a passion for the education of the whole Church, and a commitment to the formation of Ministers of Word and Sacrament, Elders, Lay Preachers and local church members. You will want to engage people in study of Church history

and doctrine as much in local churches as in the class room. You will have experience of a diverse range of ministries within the life of the Church, and be fully engaged in aspects of Church life yourself. You will be excited at the prospect of sharing deeply in the life of the United Reformed Church and in tune with its ethos of broad theological diversity and openness in ministry and leadership to people from all backgrounds. You will relish the opportunity to share in networks of teachers and trainers in other Resource Centres for Learning and across our 13 Synods as they embrace England, Wales and Scotland. You will want to play an energetic part in fostering the United Reformed Church’s stated desire to be a learning church in which all, lay and ordained, are encouraged to grow in depth and confidence in their faith and service (see General Assembly resolutions from the Education and Learning Committee, 2006). You will be engaged in active research, and play a significant part in developing and executing plans for research within Westminster College in its service to the United Reformed Church and within the ecumenical context of the Cambridge Theological Federation.

Working as part of a small academic staff team at Westminster, and with further colleagues across the CTF and within our partner universities, you will also carry pastoral and administrative responsibilities for the good running of these institutions. You will share with colleagues in the oversight and formation of students at Westminster as they prepare for service in the United Reformed Church and beyond. Some of these students will be preparing for the Ministry of Word and Sacraments of the United Reformed Church. You are likely to have particular tutorial responsibility for a small group of Westminster’s students. You will be open to sharing in other duties as necessary and appropriate, such as becoming Director of Studies, Vice Principal, or Academic Librarian.

Terms and Conditions:This is a post of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church. It is open to ordained ministers and to lay people.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check:

This appointment is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Remuneration: For a ministerial appointment remuneration will be by stipend according to

the Plan for Partnership in Ministerial Remuneration of the United Reformed Church.

A lay appointment will join the United Reformed Church pay scale at a point comparable to a similar appointment at lecturer level within the University of Cambridge, based upon the UK higher education employers’ agreed scales. The starting salary will be between £38,511 and £48,743 per year, depending upon experience.

Probationary Period: The successful applicant will be reviewed in this post after her/his first

complete academic year (i.e. in summer, 2018).
