FIRST READINGR: The first reading for the 2nd last
Sunday of the Church Year is written in chapter sixty five of Isaiah beginning at verse seventeen.
Isaiah 65:17-25 CEVGod's glorious new creation
29
Isaiah 65:17-2517I am creating new heavens and a
new earth; everything of the past will be forgotten.
18Celebrate and be glad forever! I am creating a Jerusalem, full of happy people.
30
Isaiah 65:17-2519I will celebrate with Jerusalem and all
of its people; there will be no more crying or sorrow in that city. 20No child will die in infancy; everyone will live to a ripe old age. Anyone a hundred years old will be considered young, and to die younger than that will be considered a curse.
31
Isaiah 65:17-2521My people will live in the houses they
build; they will enjoy grapes from their own vineyards. 22No one will take away their homes or vineyards.
• My chosen people will live to be as old as trees, and they will enjoy what they have earned.
32
Isaiah 65:17-2523Their work won't be wasted, and their
children won't die of dreadful diseases. I will bless their children and their grandchildren.
24I will answer their prayers before they finish praying.
33
Isaiah 65:17-2525Wolves and lambs will graze
together; lions and oxen will feed on straw. Snakes will eat only dirt! They won't bite or harm anyone on my holy mountain.
I, the LORD, have spoken! This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm: Isaiah 12 CEV
R: The Psalm is Isaiah Chapter twelve.R: At that time you will say, "I thank you,
LORD! You were angry with me, but you stopped
being angry and gave me comfort. C: 2I trust you to save me, LORD God,
and I won't be afraid. My power and my strength come from
you, and you have saved me.” 34
Psalm: Isaiah 12 CEV
R: 3With great joy, you people will get water from the well of victory.
C: 4At that time you will say, "Our LORD, we are thankful, and we worship only you.
We will tell the nations how glorious you are and what you have done.
35
Psalm: Isaiah 12 CEV
R: 5Because of your wonderful deeds we will sing your praises everywhere on earth."
C: 6Sing, people of Zion! Celebrate the greatness of the holy
LORD of Israel. God is here to help you. »
36
Psalm: Isaiah 12 CEV
C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.
37
38
Second readingR: The second reading is written in
chapter three of 2nd Thessalonians beginning at verse six.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 CEVThe obligation to work
39
2 Thessalonians 3:6-136My dear friends, in the name of the
Lord Jesus, I beg you not to have anything to do with any of your people who loaf around and refuse to obey the instructions we gave you.
40
2 Thessalonians 3:6-137 You surely know that you should follow
our example. We didn't waste our time loafing, 8and
we didn't accept food from anyone without paying for it. We didn't want to be a burden to any of you, so night and day we worked as hard as we could.
41
2 Thessalonians 3:6-139We had the right not to work, but we
wanted to set an example for you. 10We also gave you the rule that if you don't work, you don't eat.
42
2 Thessalonians 3:6-139We had the right not to work, but we
wanted to set an example for you. 10We also gave you the rule that if you don't work, you don't eat.
43
2 Thessalonians 3:6-1311Now we learn that some of you just
loaf around and won't do any work, except the work of a busybody. 12So, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, we ask and beg these people to settle down and start working for a living. 13Dear friends, you must never become tired of doing right.
This is the word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.
44
C: Alleluia, alleluia.Jesus said: Now when these things
begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads,
because your redemption is drawing near.
Alleluia. (Luke 21:28 NRSV)
45
gospelM: The Holy Gospel is written in
chapter twenty one of the Gospel according to St Luke beginning at verse five.
C: Glory be to You O Lord.•
Luke 21:5-19 CEVSigns of the end of the age
46
Luke 21:5-195Some people were talking about the
beautiful stones used to build the temple and about the gifts that had been placed in it. Jesus said, 6"Do you see these stones? The time is coming when not one of them will be left in place. They will all be knocked down.”
47
Luke 21:5-197Some people asked, "Teacher, when
will all this happen? How can we know when these things are about to take place?"
8Jesus replied: Don't be fooled by those who will come
and claim to be me. They will say, "I am Christ!" and "Now is the time!" But don't follow them.
48
Luke 21:5-199When you hear about wars and riots,
don't be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but that isn't the end. 10Nations will go to war against one another, and kingdoms will attack each other. 11There will be great earthquakes, and in many places people will starve to death and suffer terrible diseases.
49
Luke 21:5-19All sorts of frightening things will be
seen in the sky. 12Before all this happens, you will be
arrested and punished. You will be tried in your meeting places and put in jail. Because of me you will be placed on trial before kings and governors.
50
Luke 21:5-1913But this will be your chance to tell
about your faith. 14Don't worry about what you will say to
defend yourselves. 15I will give you the wisdom to know what to say. None of your enemies will be able to oppose you or to say that you are wrong.
51
Luke 21:5-1916You will be betrayed by your own
parents, brothers, family, and friends. Some of you will even be killed. 17Because of me, you will be hated by everyone. 18But don't worry! 19You will be saved by being faithful to me.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise be to You O Christ.
Prayer after gospelM: Lord Jesus, thank you for promising
to be with us when we face times of trial.
Help us not to be afraid, but to stand firm.
C: Amen.
52
APOSTLES’ CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
APOSTLE’S CREED
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
APOSTLES’ CREED
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy christian* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
