The mathematics curriculum is based around the following aims:
•Fluency: To become fluent in mathematics. (Frequent practise leads to the ability to recall and to apply known facts to solve increasingly complex problems.)
•Reasoning: To be able to reason mathematically. (To investigate a mathematical idea or operation so they can make general statement or prove an idea using mathematical language.)
•Problem solving: To be able to solve problems. (To apply their mathematics to every day and more complex problems and with increasing sophistication.)
The new curriculum emphasises the importance of language. The children are expected to develop their mathematical vocabulary to explain their work and justify an argument.
