Welcome to the World of Mindful MovementWhat exactly is Mindful Movement? Simply put, it is exercise performed with awareness. It involves mental focus, to train your body to move optimally through both athletic activities and everyday life. It’s exercise that makes you move smarter. Isn’t that Pilates? It sure is – and always will be. But Balanced Body now has both new and re-engineered pieces of equipment that take mindful movement in different directions. Directions that include more cardio challenges, more strength training elements and more balance work, to name a few.

So, welcome to the world of mindful movement. We think it is the next step in the evolution of fitness!

What’s new at Balanced Body®?Have you ever looked back at a year and said: “Wow, a lot has happened”? That’s the kind of year we’ve had at Balanced Body. Some of the highlights:

MOTR™PAGES 18-19

MOTR is so much MOre Than a Roller. It combines the comfort of a foam roller with the adjustability of three resistance levels, giving you a challenging and incredibly diverse workout tool. All in a 43” long cylinder that takes up minimal space.

Bodhi Suspension System™PAGE 17

The Bodhi Suspension System has two independent ropes and four suspension points. No other single suspension system offers this. Each point adds fun and unique physical challenges. Exercise tracks include strength, stability, balance, proprioception, and flexibility.

SmartBells®PAGE 26

Uniquely shaped to carve through space in flowing, rotational movements, SmartBells can stretch and tone your whole body. Now in many new colors.

Begin Chair™PAGE 25

Is it furniture? Is it an exercise apparatus? It’s both! The Begin Chair promotes active sitting, great posture, and the opportunity to effectively exercise right at your desk. And did we mention how cool it looks?

Old Friends Get New Looks Your input is always valuable to us and this year we used some of your suggestions to re-engineer two of our most popular Reformers: the Allegro® Reformer (online at pilates.com) and the IQ® Reformer (p. 11)! You’ll love the new user-friendly changes.

Elastik™PAGE 23

A personal and portable jungle gym that you can hold in your hands! Elastik emphasizes strengthening and balance challenges while on your feet, but moves fluidly between floor and standing exercises. It’s effective and economical.

Balanced Body EducationInterested in becoming a Pilates or mindful movement instructor in 2015? Our instructor training and continuing education opportunities are expanding to include: Pilates, Anatomy in Three Dimensions™, Balanced Body Barre™, Bodhi Suspension System™, CoreAlign®, and MOTR®.

A Q&A With I.C. “Chuck” RapoportEDITOR’S NOTE: Television writer, author, photographer, entrepreneur, I.C. “Chuck” Rapoport has led an interesting life. One of the seminal moments in his career came in 1961 as a young photographer for Sports Illustrated, when he was assigned to take pictures of a man who claimed he had invented an unusual but very effective exercise system. The resulting pictures have become industry icons (see our collection at pilates.com) and provide the last, clear glimpse into the work of Joseph Pilates. Balanced Body recently met up with Chuck and asked him about his session with Joe and what the exercise has done for him personally.

How did you get the job to photograph Joe? My editors told me to photograph some “crazy old guy” over on 8th Avenue in NYC. I had only just begun shooting pictures for Sports Illustrated, having spent the summer photographing the National Marble Tournament and the Soap Box Derby Eastern Trials. I spent one whole day with Joe Pilates taking seven rolls of film of him working with clients.

What was Joe Pilates like?I remember Joe as a one-of-a-kind guy. He was 78 years old yet he was in incredible shape for a man of that age. He greeted me almost naked with only a pair of black bathing briefs, holding a cigar and wearing glasses. He had an artificial eye which I had to work around when photographing him.

Joe was seemingly harsh with some of the clients and gentle with others. I believe now that he was soft on the beginners but tough on his clients who should have known better than to lollygag on the machines he had spent a lifetime creating. He yelled at one woman lying back on his Reformer that if she “kept doing that - he’d throw her out of the studio.” He may have been showing off to the Sports Illustrated team, but we’ve since heard stories that he had little patience for trainees who didn’t come to work hard.

What did you think of the exercise at the time?He actually put me through a few exercises to get a better understanding of his method and where it could take someone. After challenging me to “touch my toes” (I couldn’t - he touched the floor with the palms of his hands), he urged me to come back and in six months he’d have me doing the same. He put me on his Bednasium, a bed

with a full mattress that had a modified tower on one end. I hopped on only to be instructed to get off and change into briefs - which I did - and then he made me do the Hundred (I got to thirty).

When did you start doing Pilates regularly? After the photo shoot I went into the U.S. Army and was ultimately assigned to the Pentagon in the D.C. area, to work with the Office of the Chief of Information for the Army. To tell you the truth, I forgot completely about Mr. Pilates and Sports Illustrated. 38 years later in 1999, my wife, Mary Rapoport, began doing Pilates mat work and the name resurfaced. When her instructor, Emily Lawrence, came to our home with a portable Reformer, I mentioned to her that I had photographed the man who invented that machine. That was the beginning of my romance with Pilates, the photographs, and the Method.

What kind of changes did you notice in your body?Right off the bat we both noticed strength in our limbs and core. My pecs changed from needing a training bra to looking like a he-man (well, a 77-year-old

he-man). I became stronger, leaner, and happier with an all-around healthier body.

Based on your experience, what would you tell someone your age about what Pilates can do for them?I have told many people in my age range about the benefits of Pilates. It’s one great way to get healthy and stay healthy. But I make sure they know they must have a qualified instructor who didn’t learn the Method over a weekend. I was fortunate to have attended many Pilates on Tour continuing education sessions and Classical workshops, and have witnessed the intensity and dedication of the instructors who attend them. So many of them are experiencing various forms of Joe’s teachings, from his orthodox work to innovative contemporary forms. All are valid in my view; the most important thing is to continue learning and exercising in studio and home.

This year I will be as old as Joe was when I photographed him. I think he’d be proud to see me now.

Chuck Rapoport attempts the Hundred under the watchful eye of Joseph Pilates himself.

What is a Reformer? And what makes Balanced Body® Reformers different?

The most popular and versatile piece of Pilates equipment, the Reformer opens the door to hundreds of strengthening and stretching exercises. Add in variations on Joseph Pilates’ original exercises, and the Reformer is limitless in its possibilities.

Mat vs. Reformer workIn mat work, your body provides both resistance and assistance for Pilates exercises, affected only by gravity and your body weight. Reformers extend the exercise options much further, offering both extra challenge and support along with resistance, to improve overall strength.

How does a Reformer work?Springs attached to the Reformer carriage provide resistance or assistance as you push on the footbar or pull on the ropes.

How do Reformers differ? All Reformers share a same basic functionality. Balanced Body makes several styles of Reformers to meet differing needs.

Balanced Body’s classic wood Reformers are the recognized world standard for function, adjustability and beauty. While some prefer the easy storage capability of our portable Reformers, others need Reformers that adjust to a wide variety of body sizes, or can accommodate add-on towers for additional versatility.

➥ See our Reformer Comparison Chart at pilates.com.

FootbarPushing off the footbar initiates spring resistance at the start of an exercise.

Buying Tip: The more vertical or horizontal adjustability your footbar has, the more accurately the Reformer adjusts to different body sizes and range of motion needs. Footbars that lock provide added safety and security, and offer additional exercise options.

Ropes and Risers (or Leather Straps and Casters)Ropes connect the carriage to your hands or feet via pulleys at the head-end of the Reformer. Loops or handles attach the ropes to your hands or feet. Risers at the head-end of the Reformer change the angle of resistance and allow ropes to pass smoothly above the shoulder rests. Alternatively, more traditional Reformers use leather straps and casters.

Buying Tip: Look for a rope system that allows quick, secure and easy adjustments between exercises.

SpringbarThe springbar lies at the foot-end of the Reformer. Attaching or detaching springs to the bar changes how much resistance is created when the carriage moves.

Buying Tip: An adjustable springbar allows greater accommodation of a user’s size, range of motion and ability.

6

Page 9: Welcome to the World of Mindful Movement · Ask us – we’d love to help! Our friendly, knowledgeable staff offers top-notch ... 29 Men: The X-Factor of Pilates 44 Pilates in Afghanistan

SpringsSprings provide resistance for each exercise, and are color-coded to indicate resistance level. Safety is critical; always use high quality springs, and follow care and replacement guidelines.

Buying Tip: Choose springs that have been thoroughly tested for precision, consistency and durability. Nickel-plating prevents corrosion and extends spring durability.

Head and Shoulder RestsThe headrest provides head and cervical support. Shoulder rests offer stability and comfort.

Buying Tip: For effective positioning and maximum comfort, head and shoulder rests should be adjustable and padded. It is also convenient if shoulder rests can be removed for some exercises.

CarriageLie, sit, kneel or stand on the carriage, and move it by pushing against the footbar or pulling the ropes.

Buying Tip: Your carriage should be covered with commercial-grade padding and durable upholstery, and the ride should be quiet, smooth and comfortable.

Standing PlatformThe standing platform is aptly named; you stand with one foot on the platform while the other moves the carriage back and forth.

Buying Tip: Bigger is better for standing platforms, and a large non-skid surface is an important safety feature.

FrameThe key to your Reformer’s lifespan will be the strength and durability of the frame. The frame houses the other Reformer components; some frames are wood, others are metal.

Buying Tip: Wood or metal, choose frames of the highest quality and construction methods, the most durable materials, and with an appropriate height for your needs. Wood frames should be smooth and finished.

Sitting BoxPlaced on the carriage, a Sitting Box increases the exercise options, including seated and prone positions, side stretching and more.

Buying Tip: Boxes should be extremely sturdy with durable upholstery and handles for easy lifting. Rounded edges make them more comfortable.

Foot PlateAlso called a jumpboard, the foot plate is a padded, upright platform that attaches to the foot-end of a Reformer. You can do cardio exercises like running and jumping while lying on the carriage and pushing off the foot plate with your feet.

Buying Tip: Bigger is better. Foot plates should be padded and must install securely.

All Fours CatKneel with lower leg lengthwise on the roller and place hands on MOTR arm. Load the free leg around the arch of the foot, and extend leg in a straight line from the hip. Round the back and flex the hip to bring free leg in toward the chest. Make sure the head follows the spine as it flexes.

Plank, Leg LoadedKneel facing roller and place hands or forearms on roller, with shoulders directly above. Extend legs and come into plank position. Place the strap closest to the feet on either leg. Lift and lower the loaded leg. Lifting the inside leg works the hamstrings and inner thigh. Lifting the outside leg works the hamstrings and outer thigh.

Overhead PressRemove MOTR arm from roller. Place MOTR arm on floor and put a strap on each foot. Pick up arm and slowly roll up to standing with arms straight at sides and feet under the hips or slightly wider. Bend knees and lower body into a squat position while bending elbows to bring arms toward the chest. As the legs straighten, press the arms overhead and stand tall. Keep shoulders down as the arms lift up.

Supine Opposite Arm and Leg LiftSit on roller facing away from MOTR arm; place one strap around one foot. Slide hips to end of MOTR and roll down to lie on roller. Take hold of free strap with hand opposite loaded leg. Start with loaded arm and leg high, and lower both toward the floor while lifting the torso, neck and head off the roller.

TeaserRemove MOTR arm from roller. Place a strap on each foot. Hold the arm in front of your chest; roll down onto your back. Roll torso off the mat and lift the legs at the same time, until arms are overhead and toes are level with head. Return to starting position by activating the abdominals to roll back down, while lowering the legs.

Step Back LungeFrom the standing position, balance MOTR with one hand and place a strap around each foot toward the back of the arch. Stand with legs in parallel; align hips, knees and ankles. Step back with one leg and bend both knees to lower into a lunge. From the lunge, press into the floor and push off with back leg to return back leg to starting position. Accent the land into the lunge and the controlled push-off as the leg returns.

Start your MOTR™ with these sample exercises!

Men: The X-Factor of PilatesIt’s no secret that most Pilates participants around the globe are women. But the frustrating question is why? When you look at the origin of Pilates it really seems that this is an exercise that men should flock to. It was designed by a man who was a former boxer and gymnast in order to rehabilitate wounded internees during World War 1. How manly is that?

The elite athlete factorSo, why aren’t all of you men trying Pilates? Here’s something you might not know: Pilates can improve your athletic ability. Runners can shave seconds off their times, baseball players and golfers hit the ball farther, etc. And you can do this with less chance of injury.

In fact, the one sector of the male population that is using Pilates is a sector that most men would like to be part of: elite athletes. Many of Balanced Body’s clients are teams from the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL, as well as gold-medal winning Olympic athletes.

One studio owner who knows this well is Page Sieffert, owner of Pilates Nosara in Nosara, Costa Rica. Page started a group class specifically for men. “Their wives were all clients of mine and they were sick of hearing their husbands complaining about their backs, necks, etc., so they made them come to see me,” says Page. “There was some initial interest but also a bit of skepticism. One male client was a rugby player, and all of them

were avid surfers. When I told them that this form of exercise could make them better surfers, I had their interest.”

“I think men are under the misconception that Pilates doesn’t make you sweat and if you aren’t sweating you aren’t working out,” says Page. So she chose exercises that had more physicality and cardio elements. “ I can tell you, at the end of each of my sessions these guys are dripping.”

The other dynamic that Page had to get used to was that when the men arrived they were ready to go. “Women socialize a bit more,” she says. “The guys are focused on getting a good workout. I have their undivided attention for the entire hour. Teaching them is a lot of fun because they work hard, want to constantly take it to the next level with proper form, and are enjoying the results. Once they do several rigorous workouts with me they see the benefits and the intelligence of the Pilates Method, and they’re hooked.”

Word has gotten around, and now Page is scheduling even more men’s classes. “Other guys are seeing the results and they want in.”

What kind of results are they seeing?

Big differences in their bodies...Iain Ross is one of Page’s clients and an avid athlete. “I am an ex-junior international rugby player who suffered serious back trauma and was told I would never run again,” says Iain. “The last 10 years I have been so stiff and feeling like I am about 60 years old. During the last 10 months I have focused on rehabbing my body and mind. Page’s classes were the highlight of this, and now at 33 I surf better than I ever have before. Pilates will be part of my life forever.”

Adds Graham Swindell, another of Page’s clients: “Because I surf 350 days out of the year, my back takes a beating. After any Pilates class on the Reformer my back gets aligned again, allowing me to move painlessly in everyday routines, as well as out in the water in the line-up. If I go a couple of weeks without doing a Pilates class the pain always comes back. So it has become a necessity if I want to continue my active lifestyle.”

“Pilates just makes so much sense for guys,” says Page. “If you think about it, men especially need this type of exercise because they tend to have less flexibility, and often unknowingly choose workouts that may lead to injury. Luckily some of the guys around here are catching on!”

Page Sieffert leads one of her men’s classes in Costa Rica.

Pilates in AfghanistanMichele Bradford, Bionic Body Pilates, Kabul, Afghanistan

Editor’s NOTE: Trained in the field of public health and disaster management, Michele Bradford has traveled extensively all over the world. This includes several jobs and projects in Afghanistan. Michele fell in love with the country, and moved back there in December of 2013. On top of her job in development communications, Michele is also a Pilates instructor (she discovered Pilates while rehabilitating from a series of painful and debilitating back injuries), and now teaches expatriates and citizens living in Kabul. Balanced Body asked her to share her experiences teaching there.

I first came to Afghanistan in 2002 to conduct field research for my master’s thesis and to gain field experience developing public health initiatives for a mobile clinic program in Takhar province. I fell in love with Afghanistan; the landscapes are varied and memorable, and the people are known to be among the most hospitable of cultures. But what may not be widely known is that they have an abundant sense of humor and a remarkable resilience.

My studio is called Bionic Bodies Studio as a nod to the titanium hardware in my lumbar spine, and also in honor of the internal resilience that human beings

have to overcome challenges. I teach mat and Reformer classes here, and I have the only Reformers in Afghanistan!

A welcome respite for many…I teach an interesting array of people: journalists, humanitarian aid workers, international development practitioners, diplomats, members of United Nations offices, private contractors in security and construction, private sector business owners, and Afghans themselves. My clients range from healthy, athletic bodies to those suffering from injuries, pain and restricted movement.

For women, it’s a unique escape from restrictions in public space where cultural norms require women to be fully covered, wear head scarves, and largely refrain from exercising or doing outdoor activities in public. For both men and women, many expatriates live in joint housing on heavily secured compounds and are under strict security restrictions. Few have access to gyms, and most gyms are not geared towards female clientele. The other challenge is that some facilities restrict access to Afghans due to certain security platforms; others are off limits to expatriates as they are determined to be at risk of attack.

Michele Bradford instructs a British expatriate in her studio in downtown Kabul. In order to share pictures like this on social media, Michelle keeps her face somewhat obscured so that she is following the cultural norms in Afghanistan.

…but it can be strangeIt is rewarding, but teaching Pilates in Afghanistan is surreal at times. This summer I was teaching a private mat class one evening and heard loud blasts close by. Was it construction? Celebratory gunfire for a wedding? A Taliban attack? If it was a Taliban attack and we were at risk, the security guards would inform us. So we moved on to planks...

I recently had an Afghan male client who posed a challenge. Based on the cultural norms between the sexes here (particularly for men and women who don’t know each other) it would be inappropriate for him to be seen entering my residence. I had to negotiate securing space in a nearby clinic that treats both internationals and Afghans. Next, I had to wear extremely baggy clothes and have my headscarf tightly wrapped so that as I moved in and out of the different exercises, I would remain covered and ‘respectable’. In temperatures well over 80 degrees and without air conditioning, it was an exercise in patience with discomfort!

And, since it would be highly inappropriate and offensive for me to touch a male, I had to find an alternative for direct manual cues. The clinic volunteered the assistance of a male nurse. As we progressed through the session I gave verbal cues to the client, and then guided the male nurse on how to use manual cues to help with the client’s form. On the second session, the client’s son recorded the session on his iPad. This allowed the client to continue the exercises in the comfort – and cultural security – of his own home, minimizing any further risk to either of our reputations.

Helping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)Another by-product of working in a tense atmosphere is that expatriates living and working here often experience high levels

of stress and anxiety. Some are faced with traumatic events, like being caught up in a Taliban attack, or losing friends and colleagues in insurgent attacks. Some develop PTSD while here, and others experience triggering of pre-existing PTSD symptoms.

Earlier this year, during the height of the pre-election violence before Afghans took to the polls to elect a new president, I had several clients in the media who were deeply affected by reporting on bloody Taliban attacks and the loss of friends as well as several well-known members of their professional communities. I saw how a one-hour Pilates session immediately reduced their anxiety levels, improved their concentration and focus, and relieved the tension in their bodies.

Having been diagnosed with PTSD myself, I strongly believe the theory that trauma sits in certain muscles of the body and that targeted exercise can help release trauma symptoms in the body. For example, children of childhood sexual abuse often present with lower back pain in

later years. Pilates can target such muscles as the psoas, back extensors and upper quadrant muscles where trauma and stress can by symptomatic. It has relieved those symptoms for many of us here.

Next: women’s shelters of KabulBionic Bodies Pilates has partnered with an international NGO (non-governmental organization) whose mission is to use physical fitness as a means of empowering females in conflict-affected communities in Afghanistan; to overcome the harmful effects of gender, ethnic and other forms of discrimination; and to introduce Pilates mat exercises to residents of several women’s shelters as part of a pilot project. In September I taught the first mat class in a shelter supported by the organization Women for Afghan Women (WAW). More than 30 enthusiastic women participated

while others watched curiously and young children ran among the mats and mimicked stretches. The female director of WAW translated into Dari, the local language, while the women encouraged one another, laughed, and teasingly tried to trip me up while I counted repetitions in Dari. I have never laughed so much while teaching.

The shelters here often house women who have run away from abusive husbands and mothers-in-law or escaped forced marriages. They arrive at the shelters on referral from the Afghan Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, and local police stations, and are assigned defense attorneys while their cases are being adjudicated. Due to risks against their lives, they do not leave the shelters except for medical emergencies.

In these shelters women suffer from physical and mental conditions that are often left untreated. They have few if any physically stimulating activities; and many stay for several months to several

years. There is little sense of control over their lives and immediate conditions, and often little optimism over their futures.

From working with mobile clinic teams in northern Afghanistan in 2002, I know that many women from under-serviced communities do not have healthy body awareness, nor do they benefit from strong mind-body awareness. I believe that Pilates will help develop their awareness and their connection to their bodies.

The next few months are going to be exciting and challenging, and I’m looking forward to it. Pilates has not only relieved my own pain, it has given me a unique ability to ‘treat’ myself and feel empowered. My goal is to use that to help heal and empower the people here.

“I saw how a one-hour Pilates session immediately reduced their anxiety levels, improved their concentration and focus, and relieved the tension in their bodies.”

PILATES CHAIRChallenging the Core

PILATES CHAIRChallenging the Core

“Pilates is exercise with very specific cues.” These were the first words I heard when learning how to teach Pilates from Christine. As with all of her work, this new chair book follows those words. Unlike many Pilates manuals, Pilates Chair: Challenging the Core provides not only the exercises, but also a clear rationale of why each exercise is done. This manual will be useful for Pilates instructors and for rehab professionals interested in using Pilates exercise as part of a treatment program for their patients. Ben Reuter, PhD, CSCS*D, ATCAssociate ProfessorDepartment of Exercise Science and Sport StudiesCalifornia University of Pennsylvania

The exercises in Pilates Chair: Challenging the Core are presented in a very organized and logical order. As a new teacher, I found this grouping helpful in determining programs for all clients with specific needs. The variations included with each exercise provide safe and effective options for everyone.

Keeping it GreenCheck out our new eco-friendly building!

At Balanced Body we have always tried to be as friendly to this planet as possible with our business practices. When we realized we were outgrowing our current facility, we had no doubt that we would continue to practice this philosophy in our new home.

In May 2014 we moved to a building on 88th Street here in Sacramento, California. With more than 100,000 sqare feet, it houses both our office space and manufacturing facility. We installed 1,000 solar panels, as well as skylights, state-of-the-art fans, dust collection systems and a foam-insulated roof. Most importantly, the move provides Balanced Body with room to grow.

“We’re thrilled with our new space. This company was founded nearly 40 years ago, and our goal was to purchase and outfit a building that would last us at least another 40 years,” said Ken Endelman, founder and CEO. “We built a space for the next generation of Balanced Body: one that is sustainable for the planet, healthy for our workforce, and efficient in using less energy while producing more.”
